IV. Nouns and adjectives
Los artículos definidos – The Definite Articles *All nouns in Spanish have a gender - they are either feminine or masculine. The definite
articles all mean “the” in English.*
Singular Plural
Masculine el los
Feminine la las
Singular Plural Masculine: el muchacho los muchachos

el profesor los profesores
Feminine: la muchacha las muchachas
la escuela las escuelas

Nouns that end in an “o” are usually are masculine
Nouns that end in an “a” are usually are feminine

Rules for Plural Definite Articles
Nouns that end in a vowel are made plural by adding an “S”
Ex: el libro los libros
la calculadora las calculadoras
Nouns that end in a consonant are made plural by adding “es”
Ex: el papel los papeles
la instrucción las instrucciones
*In Spanish, “y” is always a consonant, never a vowel*
When you want to make a noun that ends in a “z” plural, you have to first change the
“z” to a ”c” and then add “es”

Some nouns lose their accent when the word is made plural
el pizarrón los pizarrones
Los Artículos Indefinidos - (The Indefinite Articles) The indefinite articles (un, una, unos, unas) are used before the noun and in place of the definite article (el, la, los, las).
The un or una mean ”a” in English and the unos or unas mean “some” in English.
Singular Plural

Feminine una a, an, one unas some
