Solving Quadratic Equations

x2 = c

x2 and constant (no x term)

ax2 + bx=0

x2 and x (no constant)

ax2 + bx + c=0

x2, x, and constant(All 3 terms)

Example Example Example

2x2 + 3x  5 = 02x2 + 8x = 0x2 = 25

Square root both sides of the equation, making sure to include +/.

Divide out a common factor, then set each part equal to 0.

Factor by splitting the polynomial into 2 parenthesis, then set each equal to 0.

x2 = 25

x = ±5

2x2 + 8x = 02x(x+4) = 02x=0     x+4=0x=0     x=4

2x2+3x5 = 0(2x+5)(x1) = 02x+5=0    x1=0x=5/2      x=1
