It All Begins With Attitude

So we made it through another year. If you are reading this, you’re still alive, and hopefully somewhat healthy. Will you still be able to say this when the next year rolls around? While we can’t answer that question now, we can start taking the steps necessary to increase that likelihood. It all begins with attitude! More injuries happen at home than at work. Why? AmeriCorps Goodwill GoodWorks! MLK Service Day John Shaffer

Panama City—Monday, January 18, Goodwill Industries - Big Bend’s AmeriCorps Goodwill Goodworks! Program participated in a Service Day to celebrate Martin Luther King Day 2016. January 18th also marks the first anniversary of its Community PRIDE Program. Joining hundreds of thousands of volunteers across the country on this national day of service, 20 AmeriCorps members, alumni, and volunteers gave of their time prepping and painting the house of an economically disadvantaged homeowner. This project was made possible through a partnership with First Baptist Church of Panama City, and has been the focus of a special group of volunteers called Helping Hands. Helping Hands volunteers have tackled projects and provided materials to make this home good as new by installing new windows, reworking the home’s bathroom, reworking interior floors and walls, and providing new appliances. This is the eighth home to have been scraped, prepped, power washed, and painted by the AmeriCorp Goodwill GoodWorks team during ten service days

As someone with a busy schedule, my health tends to take a back seat while juggling my daily activities. It always seems to be 8 o’clock on a Friday evening that I slow down enough to realize that I should have seen the doctor, or that I’ve run out of a routine medication. That’s where Teladoc steps up to the plate. I have used the service multiple times over the last few months and have been extremely satisfied. It is quick, easy and efficient. I just call or get online and a doctor contacts me back within minutes. With Teladoc, I have access to a doctor’s care 24-hours a day, 7 days a week. And with no co-pay, it’s hassle free so I can get back to feeling better faster.

FLOOR CREW TO THE RESCUE I would like to give Kudos to the floor crew. They went above and beyond when they found a snake in our break room. They managed to get it out without harming themselves or the snake. So from us here at Bainbridge, thank you. As most of my crew has said, they are very glad y'all found it, as they would have screamed and run out of here! Kelley Hamilton Manager, Bainbridge Store

IMPORTANCE OF HYDRATION

In January 2004, the Na onal Center for Vic ms of Crime launched Na onal Stalking Awareness Month to in-crease the public’s under-standing of stalking. Stalking is defined as any conduct directed at a specific person that would cause a reasonable person to feel fear. According to Vic m-sofcrime.org, 7.5 million peo-

ple are stalked in one year in the US. Stalking is a crime in all 50 states. If you need immediate assistance, the Vic m Con-nect Helpline provides infor-ma on and referrals for vic-

ms of all crime and can be reached at 855‐4‐VICTIM  (855‐484‐2846). If  you  are  in  im‐mediate danger call 911.

STALKING AWARENESS MONTH

Hydra on is important year-round. Keeping the body hy-drated helps the heart pump blood through blood vessels to the muscles and helps muscles work efficiently. Water helps your body’s cells, ssues, and organs func on properly. It helps your body keep a con-stant internal temperature, prevents cons pa on, cush-ions your joints, and protects your body’s organs.

Staying hydrated is also im-portant when you are sick and may be losing more water, such as when you have a fever, diarrhea, or are vomi ng.

The amount of water a person needs depends how ac ve you are and the climate you live in. If you are thirsty, you are al-ready dehydrated. Watch for signs of dehydra on: Dry mouth, flushed skin,

fa gue and headache. Increased body tempera-

ture, breathing and pulse. Dizziness, weakness and

impaired breathing with ac vity.

HOW OBESITY AFFECTS HEALTH According to the CDC, more than one-third (or 78.6 mil-lion) U.S. adults are obese. Obesity is defined as a weight or body mass index (BMI) that is higher than what is considered normal for a given height. Individu-als with a BMI of 25-29.9, are considered overweight while those with a BMI of 30.0 or higher are considered obese. Individuals who are obese are at increased risk for many diseases and health condi ons. The consequenc-es of obesity include:

All-causes of death

High blood pressure

High LDL cholesterol, low HDL cholesterol, or high levels of triglycerides

Type 2 diabetes

Coronary heart disease

Stroke

Gallbladder disease

Osteoarthri s (a break-down of car lage and bone within a joint)

Sleep apnea and breathing problems

Some cancers (endometrial, breast, colon, kidney, gallbladder, and liver)

Low quality of life

Mental illness such as clini-cal depression, anxiety, and other mental disorders

Body pain and difficulty with physical func oning

The causes of obesity include behavior, gene cs and envi-ronment. However, it is pos-sible to achieve and maintain a healthy weight. The key is to develop a lifestyle that in-cludes healthy ea ng, regular physical ac vity, and main-taining a balance of calorie intake with calories burned. Here are some resources to find balance, lose weight, ea ng healthy, physical ac vi-ty and more. Go to cdc.gov/healthy weight and Nutri-
