The students of class IV of our school enacted the Ramayana during the Dussehra and Diwali celebrations in the school. Around 120 students of class IV presented an English adaptation of the epic Ramayana with a lot of excitement and enthusiasm. An hour long show was put in front of the primary students of the school with the motive of making them aware of the importance and significance of two important festivals of our country –Dussehra and Diwali. It was a step taken to bring the students closer to the varied culture of the country. The play showed the important parts of the ancient Sanskrit epic, the Ramayana .The play began with the Hindu sage Valmiki, who penned down the epic ,being portrayed as the narrator of the play. The play took the students through a journey in history from the time when Lord Rama got married to Sita to the victorious return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya after fourteen years of exile. The play also incorporated two dances, one –a classical Indian dance-the Bharatnatyam, shown in Ravana's courtroom and the second being the 'Diya Dance' portraying happiness and celebration after the victory of good over evil.

A TRIBUTE TO MAHATMA GANDHI

ACTIVITIES AND COMPETITIONS

FOLK DANCES FROM ACROSS THE WORLD

DANCE PERFORMANCES BY CLASS II AND III

Gandhi Jayanti was celebrated with great enthusiasm in our school by the young artists of class IV. Mahatma Gandhi, the father of our nation , promoted handicraft and the three H's -Heart, Head and Hand. Following his footsteps, our students crafted beautiful and marvellous wall-hangings, photo frames, pencil stands, etc. from non-synthetic materials such as jute, wood and other re-usable materials. This 'Best out of Waste' activity held on 1 October 2012, helped in bringing out many stupefying masterpieces.

Almost all the countries of the world have their specific folk music and dance which proves to be a wonderful way of expression of their community and traditions. To help our students imbibe such culture, our school organized an event – 'Folk Dances From Across The World' on 5 October 2012. The students of class I put forth dances of various countries like Egypt, Russia, China, Turkey, Hawaii, Malaysia and Saudi Arabia. Dressed up in colourful attire, the students danced with great enthusiasm and mesmerized the audience. The parents were spellbound by the perfect performances of their delicate darlings as they looked vibrant and stunning in their wonderful costumes. The event was a huge success as our little dancers reminded the audience that life is not just about getting through the storms, but about dancing in the rain.

Dancers can communicate ideas, preserve cultural identities, strengthen social bonds, or simply have a lot of fun. With this thought in mind, our school gave an opportunity to the students of classes II and III to put forth their talent and express their creativity in a Folk Dance Competition christened –Folk Dances From All Over The World. Our students presented beautiful dances from countries like Mexico, Russia, China, Thailand, etc. The audience that included parents, teachers and the esteemed judges, couldn't stop applauding. The judges were left spellbound by the mesmerizing performances of unique dance forms. They praised the participants and their respective teachers for the undaunted effort put in to glorify the event.Russian Folk Dance from class II and Korean Folk Dance from class III were adjudged the best dances and were presented with prizes by our Chairperson, Ms. Anjali Aggrawal and our Principal, Ms. Sheena Kalenga.

SPIC MACAY PROGRAMME

PLANETARIUM SHOW IN SCHOOL

‘The pen is mightier than the sword.' Writing is the best medium of self expression. Two students, Mokshneel Kaul of V-B and Damini Yadav of VIII-C of our school got the opportunity to put forth their perceptions in the annual 'On the Spot Inter-School Essay Writing Competition' organized by HT PACE in association with the National Museum of Natural History on 9 November 2012. They participated in the Junior and Senior Category respectively. The topic for the Junior Category was 'Save, Protect and Preserve for a Cleaner, Better and Healthier Future' and the topic for the Senior Category was 'The Joy of Life lies in Nature's Beauty, to Preserve it is our Sacred Duty'. The students were enthralled on hearing the topics. After the competition ended, the two students along with their teacher Ms. Jyoti Gulati explored the museum and had a good time learning new facts.

Under the aegis of SPIC MACAY, our school organised an Odissi Dance Recital by Ms.Arushi Mudgal on 24 September 2012 in the school auditorium. A Society for the Promotion of Indian Classical Music And Culture Amongst Youth - SPIC MACAY is India's largest voluntary non-profit movement founded in the year 1997 by Dr.Kiran Seth. Through focus on the classical arts, SPIC MACAY seeks to facilitate an awareness of their deeper and subtle meaning and values to students. The mesmerising performance by Ms. Arushi Mudgal in the form of lecture-demonstration was an eye - opener for the students as well as the teachers. Ms.Arushi Mudgal, a recipient of the Indian President's Bal Shree Award in 2002 explained to the students the intricacies of the Odissi dance. The students were completely engrossed and spell-bound by her performance.

In its continuous effort to make learning fun and enjoyable, our school organised a Planetarium Show on 8 and 9 October 2012.A portable dome- shaped projection screen onto which the planets and other heavenly bodies were made to move to simulate their complex motions was erected in the school courtyard which made our little children very curious .Students of classes I-V also saw different animated videos related to the universe. Students were shown videos

like ‘Puppy on the Moon’and ‘Journey to Wonderlands’. Each show lasted for 45-50minutes. After the show, a short quiz was conducted to assess the students' understanding. MEDIA CLUB ACTIVITIES

EACH ONE TEACH ONE

Life Media Club of our school drafted a newspaper in the month of September 2012. The students had put in a lot of hard work and creative efforts to gather information about national and international news. Moreover, activities conducted in our school were mentioned in the newspaper. An effort was made to enhance the knowledge of our students about technology, health and literature. In the month of October 2012, the student members made posters on burning issues like girl child and corruption. They depicted the courage shown by Malala, the Pakistani teenager and also depicted the controversy involving Arvind Kejriwal and Robert Vadra. Efforts were made to sensitize the students and create awareness regarding corruption and the poor condition of girl child in our society. The students of LIFE MEDIA CLUB did myriad activities in November. They did sample surveys to better understand the variety of products that float in the market and how their ads affect the masses. They also closely monitored the brand placements that are there in the serials and saw how they impact the viewers. The students also made a questionnaire to check the memory of the people surveyed to reveal the effect of the ads that are endorsed by big names- be it a sportsperson or an actor. The whole activity was entertaining ,educative and informative .It definitely added to the knowledge and confidence of the students.

11 November, the birthday of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, is observed every year as the National Education Day. He was an eminent educationist, a great freedom fighter and the first Union Minister of Education of our country. On this day, the students of class X and XI of our school reaffirmed their commitment towards education by becoming a part of the "Each-One-Teach-One Programme" by interacting with the illiterate adults working as sweepers in the school. The excitement and joy was evident on the faces of the students and the school sweepers. The students interacted with their 'adult' students very politely and patiently, teaching them the basic Number System and English alphabets. Some of the sweepers were able to write 3-letter words and even their name in English. The effort made by the students towards eradicating illiteracy was quite successful as many of the sweepers showed inclination and interest when taught basic mathematical operations and English words. The students had a wonderful and unforgettable experience, and will continue their efforts of spreading literacy in the near future.

Creating awareness regarding the present day state of affairs are the students of Life Media Club.

Spreading literacy and happiness- our young and responsible citizens.

SPORTS DAY“The will must be stronger than the skill.” The very spirit of sportsmanship enables the young athletes of our school to put in their best effort in the field. Sports and games are means of mental and physical growth. During sports we come to learn many things. We learn how to maintain our mental balance in the midst of hope and despair. They make us learn how to tackle a difficult situation. Sports also develop a sense of friendliness. The Annual Sports meet held in our school encouraged many students to build up their interest in games. It was declared open by our Principal, Ms. Sheena Kalenga and our Vice Principal, Ms. Sabina Shergill on 26 November 2012 and 30 November 2012 for juniors and seniors respectively. The enthusiastic athletes participated in the track and field events such as 100m flat race, 400m relay race, lemon 'n' spoon race, etc. and games such as badminton, football, lawn tennis, etc. These games explained students the concept of teamwork, as teamwork and unselfishness create the backbone of a great team, without them a team cannot realistically compete. The cheerful audience, the efficient faculty, the able volunteers and a variety of sports made the event a great success. Gandhi house bagged the first position, Nehru house stood the second, while Patel house bagged the third position. Our Principal, Ms. Sheena Kalenga and Vice Principal, Ms. Sabina Shergill bestowed the medals to the winners. The following were the winners of the Annual Sports meet 2012-13.

VEDIC MATHS WORKSHOP'Vedic Mathematics' is the name given to the ancient system of mathematics or to be precise, a unique technique of calculations based on simple rules and principles, with which any mathematical problem - be it arithmetic, algebra, geometry or trigonometry - can be solved mentally. For many students, the most feared subject is Mathematics. Well to those, who find Mathematics a scare, they should go for Vedic Mathematics. Some of the most complicated problems can be solved without holding a pen and a paper. Stuff like square root, cube root and fifth root can be resolved with simple concepts. Keeping in mind these advantages of Vedic Maths, our school organized a Vedic Maths workshop for the students of class XI. The workshop was conducted by Mr. Rajesh Mishra from IMS Learning Resources Pvt. Ltd .The workshop highlighted the need of Vedic mathematics in competitive as well as curriculum examinations. The students learnt simple mathematical tricks for calculating the squares of numbers, product of two numbers and the square root and cube root of numbers. The students also learnt how to multiply two and three digit numbers within a few seconds. A small test was also conducted to check the speed and accuracy of the students in basic calculation areas. The students were also made aware of the various career options available to them after completing their class XII. All in all, it was a fun and informative workshop.

At times when life takes a turn, it offers things, we might not have imagined of. One such opportunity was provided to St. Mark’s School by the Times NIE to make the student edition for a day. It was a privilege for our school to be a part of this and avail this life time chance. The students of our school wrote articles for the prestigious newspaper, which was printed on 31 October 2012. The newspaper was printed on a single day, but the preparations had taken form far before. It was under the able guidance of our chairperson, Ms. Anjali Aggrawal, that the students and a team of three teachers did this enriching work. Not only the students who visited the 'Times House' had a novel experience but even for the teachers, it was a great learning experience. Two students from each branch were selected to represent their school. From our school, Shalu Gupta and Priyanka Yadav of class XI were selected to be a part of the editorial team along with their teacher Ms. Vaneet. The fervent students put forth their views regarding the latest technology and the books one must read. They also did live reporting and covered 'Sandy' the hurricane as the headline. The school made the following sections of the newspaper- Music, Tech, Travel and Book. It was a marvellous experience to see live how actually journalists work- the fast and competitive life they live. This success was a result of long hours of hard work by students as well as teachers. Designing this newspaper was not the art of a single hand, but a collection of different ideas which made this newspaper unique.'
