SPIRE’s 85th Annual Meeting & Member Appreciation EventWith the theme, “Prepare to be Amazed,” SPIRE Credit Union held its 85th Annual Meeting and Member Appreciation Day event on February 16 to a strong and enthusiastic crowd.
4,340 attendees filled the auditorium and additional overflow rooms at Grace Church in Eden Prairie. A record number of attendees also took advantage of informational sessions prior to the event. Session topics included budget basics, investing in your future, how to be a savvy home seller, and avoiding fraud.
During the business meeting, SPIRE President/CEO Dan Stoltz shared how SPIRE is growing six times faster than the national average, with continued record loan and asset growth. SPIRE was also recognized nationally for its lending practices, marketing, and work in combating financial crimes. SPIRE
Board Chair Tom Heinzen echoed Stoltz’s remarks, stating, “By nearly every measure, 2018 was the best year in SPIRE’s 85-year history.”
Returning for a second year, Circus Juventas amazed the audience with an incredible performance. The non-profit circus performing arts school based in St. Paul, provides “ordinary children with extraordinary opportunities.”
Attendees were encouraged to bring food to benefit People Reaching Out to People (PROP) Food Shelf. Nearly 1,000 pounds of food and cash donations were collected which provided 830 meals—sustaining the food shelf for an entire day! Guests also had the opportunity to purchase candy bars as part of the SPIRE GiveBack Team’s yearlong initiative to raise money for Gillette Children’s Specialty
Healthcare. $750 was raised and will be sent to Gillette!
The event concluded with each registered attendee receiving $25. “As we celebrate our 85th year, I am not only proud of the service we provide our member/owners, but also the ever-increasing commitment to giving back to our communities,” said Dan Stoltz, “I look forward to seeing the impact we will have over the next 85 years!”

SPIRE Receives National Recognition for Combating Financial Crimes
Calling all Class of 2019 Grads!
SPIRE will award two $500 scholarshipsAPPLICATION REQUIREMENTS:
• Must be a primary member of SPIRE
• SPIRE account must be in good standing
• Student must retain a 2.0 GPA or higher
• Must be a high school senior seeking higher education (traditional)
• Scholarships will be awarded to applicants attending any post-secondary, accredited school (2-year, 4-year, trade school, vocational school, etc.)
Interested applicants must submit an online application and write an essay of 500-1,000 words. Apply online at myspire.com. Application deadline is April 15, 2019.
Applicants will be selected by a committee based on the following: overall presentation of essay and application (appearance, style, grammar, content); community involvement; school/extracurricular activities.

SPIRE Credit Union has been honored with a Certificate of Appreciation from the United States Attorney’s Office and Department of Justice, recognizing its exemplary efforts to collaborate with law enforcement on combating financial crimes.
The award was presented at a regional Bank Secrecy Act Conference held at the Minneapolis Federal Reserve. Attendees represented law enforcement agencies and financial institutions. SPIRE was one of only four financial institutions in the Midwest recognized by the United States Attorney’s Office.
Accomplishments that contributed to SPIRE receiving the award include going above and beyond what is expected for relationship-building with law enforcement, as well as robust anti-money laundering policies and procedures. SPIRE regularly collaborates on financial crimes cases, working with both local and national agencies, including: The Internal Revenue Service, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Department of Justice, United States Attorney’s Office and local police departments.
“This award is not easily obtained. The U.S. Attorney’s office doesn’t present awards like this annually, which makes this a huge honor for SPIRE,” says Shannon Barrett, SPIRE’s Financial Crimes & Fraud Manager.

What is a pre-approval?A pre-approval means your chosen lender (hopefully SPIRE) has verified your income and assets to determine the home loan amount you qualify for.
Why should I get pre-approved?So you can shop for a house with confidence! In a competitive housing market, a pre-approval is the best way to show that you are serious about buying.
Getting pre-approved early can help you be prepared and avoid surprises. It’s best to make sure your credit report looks good, you have sufficient funds for closing, and you are buying a home within your budget.
How long do pre-approvals last?Generally, pre-approvals last between 90-120 days. If you need more time, the pre-approval can be updated with new credit and documents.

What is a MICR Number?Magnetic ink character recognition (MICR) is the information that appears at the bottom of a check. This includes SPIRE’s routing number, your account number, and the check number. The MICR number is printed using technology that allows certain computers to read and process the printed information for electronic processing. A MICR number can also help prevent financial fraud through the use of its special magnetic ink and unique fonts.
All SPIRE accounts have now been assigned a 14 digit MICR number. This update will enable you to set up direct deposits to any of your shares. Please note, check digit numbering sequences are limited to 4 digits to accommodate for the extra room needed on the bottom of the check. Moving forward check orders processed through our provider, Harland Clarke, will automatically revert the check numbers to 5001 once it reaches the maximum number of 9999.
