A social responsibility programme initially targeting youth using iconic kiwi artists and the mediums of music and dance with key messages on personal responsibility for waste, anti litter and the ongoing welfare and maintenance of the environment of Aotearoa New Zealand.

Initiated and seed funded by the Glass Packaging Forum

2 x pilot Youth Concerts were held on 8 July and 1 October Telstra Clear Stadium, Manukau Auckland (school holidays) to sell out crowds.

First concert had a glass bias given seed funding from GPF.Second concert and ongoing concerts include key messages to pick up all packaging waste and waste in general. Our thanks to supporting sponsors Manukau City Council (Be A Tidy Kiwi) Coca-Cola, MaiFM, C4, Dawn Raid & Che Fu Management.

The demand from the public to the pilot performances to continue is overwhelming . To have a vehicle targeting youth under 18 specifically in the school holidays which ties to a social responsibility message has been highly rated.

Artists, promoters and media partners involved in the pilot wish to continue with the programme – they have huge influence over youth and believe the brand established.

The Glass Forum are moving to have PICK IT UP made into a standalone charitable trust taking the focus away from a perceived glass aspect to “all waste” so that the programme can be adopted by all sectors of the community.

FUNDING and commitment from prospective sponsors paramount.

Focus for 2010 – take PIU to the nation throughout the school holidays.

To have 3 key sponsors (do not need to be packaging focussed) who want to adopt a social responsibility message aligned to their business.

To have 7 supporting sponsors aligned to the programme.

WISH : That PICK IT UP become the iconic anti waste/anti litter slogan/message aligned to NZ.PICK IT UP brand is cut through and overarching and lends weight/support to other programmes such as Be A Tidy Kiwi, Clean Up New Zealand. Research into a supporting education programme is being investigated.
