When I enter church I dip the tips ofthe fingers on my right hand in theholy water and bless my self withthe sign of the cross.
To myself or out loud I say, “In thename of the Father, and of theSon, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.”
I find a place to sit with myfamily. All around us are otherpeople in my parish. We allcome together to celebratethat God is with us and activein our world.
The seats look like longbenches. The long benchesare called pews.
I will try my best to sit quietlyduring Mass. If I need Mom orDad I will speak in a whisper.
Everyone standsand we sing to God. It iscalled the Gathering Song
The altar servers, lector, deacon and priest walk to thealtar from the main entrance door.
We know that the Mass has begun when the priestsays, “In the name of the Father, of the Son and of theHoly Spirit, Amen.”
The first part of Mass is the Liturgy ofthe Word. This is where God speaksto us through His word in the Bible.
Lector Priest
The lector and the priest or deacon reads to us fromthe Bible.
This is where the bread and wine become the Bodyand Blood of Jesus.
It is now time for me to receive Jesus. This is calledCommunion.
I walk up to receive Communion quietly andprayerfully.
When it is my turn, I bow my head slightly to showrespect for Jesus. The priest or minister ofCommunion will say “The Body of Christ.”
I will say “Amen.”
Once I have received Communion I go back to myseat, kneel down and quietly pray.
When Communion is finished the priest will say theclosing prayers and give a blessing. We will all makethe sign of the cross.
I will know that the Mass has ended when the priest ordeacon says. “The Mass has ended. Go in Peace tolove and serve the Lord.”
We sing about bringing Jesus into ourworld.
Then the altar server, deaconand priest will walk out of thechurch. They may be led bysomeone holding the crucifix, called a “cross bearer.”
