Have a copy of the standards available as you prepare your weekly lessons.

Label standards carefully, and highlight them in your lesson plan book.

Make parents aware of the standards you are working on so that they can help at home.

If you have the time and the inclination, use the web to create online activities.

3 + 5 = 8

First Grade

Standards 2.1, 2.5: Show the meaning of addition, using objects. Understand the meaning of symbols.

Students created the line in Excel, and added the numbers in paint. Once the number line has been created, they should save it, so that it can be used for both addition and subtraction.

3 + 5 = 8

4 + 6 = 10

Here’s another simple way to teach addition (or subtraction) using Excel. You can include the inverse operation as well.

1st grade, same standards

3 + 5 = 8

5 + 3 = 8

8 – 5 = 3

8 – 3 = 5

4 + 6 = 10

6 + 4 = 10

10 – 6 = 4

10 – 4 = 6

Grade 2

Standard 1.3: Identify numbers up to 100 in various combinations of tens and ones

Once you have determined what colors to use for the tens and ones, make it a habit to remain consistent

Tens and ones are created in Excel. Once again, it’s a good idea to save these so they can be used for future assignments.

In addition, third grade students can format a group of 100 cells, and then use all these groups to practice adding numbers up to 1,000 (See standard 2.1).

54 = 5 tens and 4 ones

First Second Third Fourth Fifth

Grade 1

Standard 1.6: Match the number names: first, second, etc., with an ordered set of up to 100 items

My students typed the words in Paint. Then they imported pictures from Kid Works. I gave them instructions such as: The dolphin is fourth, the goldfish is first, etc.

first second third fourth fifth

Another idea along the same line.

This time instruct them to create simple shapes (uncolored) and place one above each of the words. (This assignment is probably best done in Paint.)

Give instructions such as: make the third one yellow, make the fifth one green, etc..

First have students type the ordinal numbers.

3 out of 8 are purple = 3/8

5 out of 8 are green = 5/8

1 out of 8 is red = 1/8

7 out of 8 are yellow = 7/8

Excel is PERFECT for teaching fractions…at ANY grade level.

First GradeStandard 1.9: For a shape divided into 8 or fewer congruent parts, describe a shaded portion as “__out of __parts” and write the fraction

Second Grade Standard 1.8: Recognize fractions as parts of a whole or parts of a group

2 out of 5 are blue

This is similar to the previous slide, but now we deal with sets of items as opposed to a single item divided into equal parts (Standard 1.9). First and second grades.

This is best done in Paint in order to make the objects different colors.

Or 2/5 are blue

First Grade

Standard 1.1 -- Counting to 100

Bordered cells are once again created in Excel. Students can fill in the numbers one at a time, or drag to see patterns of 10.This could also be a good table to show “one more” or “one less.” (See standard 1.4)

Third grade students can use the same idea but count to 1,000.

Grade 2

Standard 1.5: Compare whole numbers up to 100 and arrange them in numerical order.

Column A dictate numbers.

Column B students order the numbers.

Column C the computers sorts the numbers in the proper order.

Students check their work.

* Note: Use the same idea for teaching alphabetical order. Also, use larger numbers for meeting standards for older students.

Grade 2 -- Standard 1.1 – Counting by 5’s, 10’s and 2’s to 100.

Format and color cells in Excel.

Grade 3 – Standards 4.3 Identify, describe, and classify solid figures.

This project is best done in Paint.

Students can outline edges and corners to see and count them more clearly.

3rd Grade

Standard 1.3: Use words, models, and expanded form to represent numbers up to 1,000

1.4: Identify any number up to 1,000 in various combinations of hundreds, tens and ones.

This is standard 1-1 (number sense) for fifth grade.

You could also add expanded notation as in the previous slide.

Grade 3 – Standards 1.8: Show equivalent fractions

using equal parts. 1.10: Decide which is larger or smaller by using objects or pictures

2/4=1/2

1/3>1/6

¼<1/2

This can also be used for the older students to show equivalent fractions, or simply to order fractions from the smallest to the largest.

Bubble blowers cost $1.73. You pay with $5.00. What is your change? Students count backwards from $1.73 using the coins and the bills.

4th grade, Standard 5.10: Determine the amount of change from a purchase

Start with $1.73

Area of the rectangle is 18 sq. units

Therefore area of the triangle is 9 sq. units

Area of 2 triangles is 18 sq. units

Area of the parallelogram is 36 sq units

Same idea can be used for a trapezoid

5th grade Standard 5.1 Understand & apply the formulas for the area of a parallelogram and trapezoid.

Grade 2 standards

Vocabulary/Concept development Standard 2: Use knowledge of individual words to predict the meaning of unknown compound words

(This is also a standard for first grade)

Grade 2/Grammar Identify and correctly write various parts of speech, including nouns and verbs.

Make all nouns red, make all verbs blue

Be consistent! Nouns are always red, verbs are always blue.

I buy presents for Christmas.

We have snowball fights.

I love winter.

We play in the snow.

This same idea can be applied to standards for older students. Simply add more parts of speech. Continue to be consistent with color choices.

Thesaurus WorkGrades 2 –3

Writing/Research- Tech.:Use various reference materials. Use a computer to draft, revise, and publish writing.

My mom is really nice.

Nobody is nice to me.

Flowers are nice.

Did you have a nice Christmas?

My mom is really kind.

Nobody is polite to me.

Flowers are pleasant.

Did you have a good Christmas?

Thesaurus work is also a standard for the older students. Next is an example of what fifth graders might enjoy (Fifth grade English standard/Research and Tech. #4: (Use a thesaurus to identify alternative word choices and meanings.)

Students learn how to properly write a letter in the process!!

I dictate the letter to the students; it’s a good way for me to check on their keyboarding skills. Also, I want to control the vocabulary they use for their thesaurus work.

Hogwarts School for Wizards C/O 13 Well Hidden Drive

London, England Oct. 16, 2001

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Weasley, I am delighted to tell you that your daughter, Ginny, has been good in class this week. She has not turned any boys into toads, and she has finished all her homework promptly. She has been able to pass all her tests with good grades also. I do have a few problems to discuss with you, however. Ginny’s fondness for pulling rats out of her hat is totally inappropriate. Every other child is able to produce a nice, fluffy rabbit. I know she wants to be helpful, but filling the cafeteria with soap bubbles after dinner last night, caused a great deal of trouble for our staff. Finally, secretly changing the recipes in her potions class almost cost us a teacher. Thank goodness Professor Snape caught the switch in time or the explosion might have been a serious one. Please talk to Ginny or send her a howler. Thank you so much for your help.

Sincerely, Prof. Dumbledore, Headmaster

2nd grade/Narrative Anal. Grade Level Appropriate Text #4: Identify the use of thythm, rhyme, and alliteration in poetry

Amy ate an apple in the attic with an ant.

Students in grades 4-8 are expected to understand and use metaphors and similes. The following are poem like examples. These would be great for a Power Point presentation by students.

Beginning with grade 4/metaphors and similes; Language arts standards/Narrative Analysis of grade level appr. Text #4

A lion’s teeth are as sharp as daggers and as long as nails.

His mane is as soft as a child’s cherished blanket. His eyes are single stars standing alone in a dark sky.

Walking proud and strong like a powerful king.

God is like the sun, always burning bright.

And even when I’m feeling low, always He is light.

He is a mighty tree, standing straight and tall.

He is the deep root that will never let me fall.

There are lots of places on the internet where you can create online quizzes or games to help your students review. Below is the address for one of my favorites.

http://www1.eboard.com/

The eboard is just one example of a quick and easy way for teachers to communicate with parents. It reminds one of “sticky notes” except it’s on the internet. See address below:

These ideas are really just the beginning. There’s probably a way to do nearly every standard on the computer. It just takes a little bit of imagination and some basic computer skills.
