have accomplished this! Now they are pain-free, healthy, and living in lov-ing homes.

In the majority of shelters these “special needs” animals would have been put to sleep — but not at the Hillside. It has al-ways been our goal to do the very best for every animal that enters our doors and because of your tremendous gener-osity we can meet our goals.

It has been an extremely hard year for me. The saying "Time heals all wounds" does not always apply. Not with losing my

Joe. There is not a moment of any day that I don't hurt for the loss. I will never get over it.

Joe's Fund keeps me alive. Without it, I don't know where I would be. Every time I open an envelope marked "Joe's Fund" my heart fills with joy. He is not gone from my life — he is still with me helping animals.

There are not enough words to express how grateful I am to you. It means eve-rything to me and to our buddies. I will never forget your kindness - not ever.

With great love and gratitude, Barbara, Joe, and buddies

W hen I use the word “miracle”

I don’t do so lightly. A miracle is some-thing that happens against all odds — against everything that should happen. It's when everything goes right — the way it should be. It is often something good that happens because of the inter-vention of someone who cares.

The Joe Parnell Spay/Neuter and Emergency Fund of the Hillside SPCA, affectionately known as “Joe's Fund”, has produced so many miracles it would take me pages to list them all.

From treatment of heartworm, broken legs, hips and jaws, starvation, mange, ear and eye surgeries — you have made these miracles happen through your generosity to Joe's Fund.

When Joe died on August 27th, 2006 I made a promise to him that his life would make a difference. I am in such awe of all the people who reached out to help all the animals with great needs.

Before Joe's Fund we never had any program that was just for spay/neuter or emergency cases. It was such trauma to me worrying every time we experi-enced the heartaches of abuse, ne-glect, and accidents that would cost so much to fix.

I was so amazed that people would reach out to a face that needed help and donate to Joe's Fund because they wanted “Heaven”, “Judy”, “Stormy” or one of so many other animals to have their own miracle happen! And you

L aker deserves a wonderful home of his own in which he can fulfill his

purpose in life -- to give unconditional love. A Golden Retriever and Chow mix, Laker arrived at the Hillside as a stray. We originally thought he might have been hit by a car because he could not walk or even stand properly.

Taken to the vet immediately, it turns out he is actually young (4-years-old) but lacks muscle mass in his hind end. Treated with the medication Rimadyl, he was up and walking around within a few days greeting people who came to visit the Hillside.

Laker is perfectly housetrained, well-mannered, and loves pampering and grooming which is a snap since he

barely sheds. He is a gentle giant who is not aggressive with his toys or food, loves to go for walks and is great on a leash. On his list of favorite things in life are people, children, and other dogs of all sizes. On his list of least favorite things is cats!

Although not able to run around and "play" in the traditional sense, Laker is content to watch the action going on around him! Laker knows his com-mands well and often "talks" to you when he is spoken to. Loyalty is high on Laker's list — he will get attached to you and will follow you everywhere.

Poor Laker has been with us since April of this year and has spent many months watching other dogs come in and go out with very few potential adopters taking notice of him. Those who do feel he's "too big", have cats in the household, worry he can’t navigate stairs, or fear medical bills.

So sweet, yet never chosen... Every day, blinking back tears, we pray that today is his day — the day someone will fall in love with Laker the way we have. Sadly so far, every day ends with Laker still longing for a very special someone. If that special someone is you, please contact us today!

Thank you!

H aven arrived at the Hillside in a state of shock, the aftermath of having her leg being caught in a crushing

and barbaric leg hold trap for who knows how many hours -- or days. She was a stray being fed by a caring woman but failed to appear for several days. When she did, much to the woman’s horror, her leg was barely attached to her body, much of it caught in the steel trap. The woman's husband was able to open it and rushed Haven to us. Haven’s leg needed immediate amputation. Thankfully, Haven's now on the road to a full recovery. Sadly, Haven is only the latest in a line of cats to come to us as the victim of a steel-jawed trap. PA is one of only two remaining states that allows the use of these devices of torture that bring untold suffering to so many wild animals as well as

unsuspecting domestic pets like Haven. Haven surely deserves a good, caring home.

M r. Whiskers cruel owner threw him over a four foot wall and into the path of a young bicyclist who could

not avoid running over him. Very upset about what happened, the young man unwittingly returned Whiskers to his owner, who then ranted to the poor shaken boy that his girl friend had been scratched by the cat, the cat deserved what he got, and he was not about to take it to a veterinarian. Luckily, an observer of the incident called the State Police who in turn called us. Signed over to us as we requested, Mr. Whiskers promptly received the medical attention he needed. He is now recovering from his trauma, which included a serious fracture above the “elbow” of his rear leg among other injuries. He will definitely make a great pet.

J udy (left in photo) and Rudy (right) were two of our special needs ca-

nine residents. Luckily for them, this rhyming duo each got adopted to won-derfully responsible and loving homes!

Judy, an older beagle brought to our shelter after living in a kennel with her daughter her entire life was adopted out once, lost, then found nearly a month later, only weighing 13 pounds!

Making mat-ters worse, she returned with a broken leg and a hernia, pervi-ous repaired, that needed repair again. Both were taken care of once she returned to us, of course.

Judy sure has been through the wringer! But, the past is the past, and Judy is now off to her new life adopted by a couple who are “owned” by several other Hillside Alumni.

Rudy, a scruffy terrier mix came to our shelter as a stray. Unfortunately, Rudy was diagnosed with heartworm. His condition was severe, though he did

make it through his first treatment. Due to added complications of a heart mur-mur and anemia caused by the worms, the vet decided it was too risky to con-tinue treatment.

But that didn’t stop Rudy from finding his “fur-ever” home! He is thriving in his new life. Though his long-term progno-sis isn’t bright due to all the heartworm

damage, his new family is dedicated to giving Rudy all he de-serves for whatever time he has left.

Many shelters would have given up on these two dogs but not the Hillside.

Thanks to the Joe Parnell Spay/Neuter and Emergency Fund of the Hillside, Judy and Rudy received top-notch care and a second chance at life.

Hats off to all our generous supporters who have contributed to this fund, you have made a dramatic difference for so many grateful animals (and for us...)!!

Bless you all.

S ome days at Hillside you

cry. Sometimes it is tears of sorrow, other times tears of joy — like when a f a v o r i t e “resident” finds a forever home.

Mimi came to us 2-1/2 years ago,

skinny, scared, and having just given birth to a litter of kittens. A woman wanted her badly but was ill and could not continue to care for Mimi along with three other cats.

Spayed and settled in after being ini-tially scared and depressed, Mimi’s appetite picked up and soon she was a plump kitty who loved to sleep in her favorite baskets. Unfortunately for Mimi, this is why she was overlooked by visi-tors since cats who approach them are some of the first to be adopted.

One of our Hillside angels, Liz Pysher, took a special liking to Mimi even though she usually works in our “dog side”. Liz visited Mimi every day she was here. Noticing Mimi was losing weight and seemed “down”, Liz brought her food every day and Mimi would appear for her treats, then retire back to her baskets for a nap.

Shedding many tears over Mimi being passed by for adoption, Liz was ecstatic to get a call at home one day from our Feline Manager telling her someone was interested in Mimi — the woman who brought her to the shelter in the first place! She had recovered from her illness and couldn’t get Mimi out of her mind.

Liz’s prayer of, “Please let Mimi go home today!”, was answered when she was called to the cat room to meet Mimi’s “new mom”. Hugging Mimi and shedding tears of joy, Liz said a bitter-sweet goodbye.

Mimi now enjoys snoozing on her favor-ite jacket and loves watching tennis on TV! Liz continues to visit the cat side and wishes and prays the rest of our fantastic cats, especially those who have been with us over a year, get for-ever homes soon, just like sweet Mimi.

N o, it’s not a new diet plan — it’s a unique fundraising project to

benefit the Hillside SPCA by Alexandra Poncelet, an inspiring 8th grade student from Schuylkill Haven, PA. Alexandra’s goal is to fill an empty 20-lb dog food bag with 20 lbs. of one dollar bills — by Christmas!

Alexandra’s Mom has been involved with the shelter since before Alexandra was born, so as long as she can re-member there have been animals in need coming to her home — some for a few hours, days, or weeks — others became a permanent part of the family. Alexandra says, “There never seems to be enough money to make real changes — spaying and neutering to stop overpopulation and education to end needless suffering. Animal cruelty goes on because the laws are not strict enough.” She believes buying a cute puppy or kitten at a store means a shel-t e r a n i m a l j u s t l o s t o u t .

Alexandra admits, “I know this project sounds like a huge task, but I truly be-lieve I can do it — I believe the Hill-side’s wonderful supporters will come through.”

So, if you see Alexandra’s stand at the mall or in front of a local store, don’t just walk on by. You can help her reach her goal and make a difference. You may also send donations to: “20 Pounds”, c/o Hillside SPCA, P.O. Box 233, Potts-ville PA 17901.

I f you have a few spare hours every now and then and would like to as-

sist needy animals at the Hillside SPCA, we would appreciate your help with fundraising!

With the multitude of yearly events needed to keep the shelter running, there’s something for everyone. If the outdoors call you, there is our Walk-A-Thon or Open House. If it’s fast cars or motorcycles, there’s Big Diamond Raceway’s yearly Hillside SPCA Night, car shows and motorcycle poker runs. How about a night on the town with dine-outs (terrific food) Pub Crawl (great music) and dances?

If shopping is your favorite pastime, we have many benefits throughout the year at local malls. Hooked on yard sales? Craft shows? — there’s several of those, too! We need folks to help at

tables – setting up, tearing down, and of course, taking donations and handing out literature.

These important events could not be possible without the generous gift of “time” from our wonderful volunteers who are a vital part of the shelter. Re-member, the animals ultimately receive the fruits from donations of “time” in so many ways.

One morning we received yet another call about a stray cat in distress. Our cat staff immediate went to provide aid. Upon our arrival, we found a very friendly, neutered, black cat with two huge infected wounds on his neck and back. Now named “Foster”, only he knows what trauma caused these wounds. Foster was taken to the vet where his wounds were drained and treated. Now in foster care, he is awaiting a home of his own where he will be kept inside so he doesn’t have to worry about injury again. If you are interested in Foster, call us today!

For those wishing to remember the Hillside SPCA in your will and estate planning, it is important to use our full corporate title in

doing so: Hillside Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, Incorporated

HILLSIDE SPCA, INC.

PO BOX 233

POTTSVILLE, PA 17901

Come join us for a fun-filled event.

Be with people who love animals!

Share the happiness of what your wonderful contributions have accomplished!

Bring your pets (our alumni) or a picture of our buddies!

It's hard working here every day, the only benefit we receive at the Hillside is seeing our buddies happy and healthy. Sharing moments and pictures of the happy endings is what keeps us going. It is the reason we are here. And, hopefully, you may make eye contact with a face

that will melt your heart and take them home with you.

Hope to see you!
