Top honors for the Union CountyTournament boys track and fieldcrown went to Elizabeth but only byone point (100-99) just ahead of theUnion Catholic Vikings at Hub StineField in Plainfield on May 18-19.Rahway took third at 47, followed byGovernor Livingston (GL) at 45,Westfield at 36 and Cranford at 32.Scotch Plains-Fanwood placed 10that 21.

On Day 2, Cougar Trey Pascualwas the highest flyer in the pole vaultwith a height of 13-6 and teammateMark Lynch took sixth with a heightof 11-6. But on Day 1, Cougar JosiahCadet nearly had his dream come truein the 400 hurdles. Cadet, who set hisschool’s record (55.15) in the 400hurdles at the UC Conference meet, did one better when he gave it his allto place second in the event at 54.78just a nose behind GL HighlanderAndrew Aguilera who finished in54.74. Cougar Kyle Ledford finished10th at 59.89.

“The second hurdle, I miscounted, hit it but I went through that. And likethe last three, I hit the third one but Iwanted to get first so bad. I had tokeep going,” Cadet expressed.

Around the far turn, Cadet was inthe mix with four runners but he put inthe extra effort down the stretch.

“I was just determined to win. I hadto. I can’t let anyone else beat me. It’sa mental thing,” Cadet revealed.

The Blue Devil boys figured topresent a strong showing in the fieldevents and the jumps with severalpersonal records (PR) being estab-lished at the conference meet the weekprior. Ian Humphrey topped his bestthrow by 24 feet to win the javelinwith a toss of 164-11.

“It was a terrific performance. Thething too is our throws crew has comea long way in the javelin event. Wehave intense competition for our thirdspot between Ian, [Brendan] Riccardiand the freshman Jeremy Kronheimer, who threw 137, which is only fourfeet off our freshman record, which isheld by Patrick Gray,” pointed out

Blue Devil Head Coach Chris Tafelski, who added, “Having the depth wehave at that event and having theyouth we have at that event is reallynice. Brendan is a junior. We gotjunior Joe San Giacomo, who hasthrown 153.”

The Blue Devil trio demonstratedtheir fierce competition among them-selves in the javelin event when SanGiacomo placed second with a PRtoss of 168-11, Fuccillo took third at162-5 and Humphrey took fourth at157-6. Dakota Acosta (Elizabeth) tookfirst with a toss of 170-3.

The power men in the shot putevent have been making big gainsalso.

“Coston O’Brien threw 50 feet inthe shot. We haven’t had a 50-footshot putter in probably eight, nineyears, and he is throwing 138 in thediscus, so we are getting good contri-butions from good guys all around. We have a freshman shot put record,Tim Allegro, with 43-11, and DeClanMcCauley is 109 feet in the discus.

ter and in the second half with RedDevil face-off specialist Matt Whitewinning the majority of the battles ofthe Wolverines in the pit. McCauleyfinished with 13 saves.

“I think our defense is a reallytough defense all-around. We focuseda lot on correcting our errors thisweek. We all got each other’s back. Ifit comes down on our end, we can geta lot of turnovers. It came down to theamount of turnovers we were able toforce and how well we played whenthe ball is on the defensive end,”McCauley said.

Freshman defenseman Colin Freermade some key takeaways when theBlue Devils and McCauley reallyneeded a shift in momentum.

“Colin is a freshman. He plays likeone of the older guys. He was thrownin there from the beginning of theseason and he really responded. He’sbeen a guy I have been close to be-cause he is in my brothers grade. Iknew when he was pushed into thelineup, he would do well,” McCauleysaid.

“It’s been a rivalry pretty much fora while. We played them earlier in theseason, beat them by three but it wasa tight game. We had a focused men-tality coming into this game. Wescouted them pretty hard and we knewwhat was at stake. Our seniors don’twant to see this season end. Neitherdo we. We think we can do somethingspecial, so it’s just the hype around

that and wanting to win the champi-onship,” Wornow said.

“They play physical. They are a bigteam. They have a lot of depth but Ithink we came out here, we executedin the first half. We were rough in thesecond half but Jack stepped up incage. He made some major stops,”McLane said.

“Jack played lights out,” Wornowadded.

“Even in football, being a footballplayer, with Hunterdon Central is al-ways a game where there’s somethingthat goes wrong but today there werea lot of mistakes on both ends. Mis-takes that we have to correct going in.But we had a tough week of practiceand we scouted them really hard. That

paid off in the end,” McCauley said.Even though the Red Devils had

the edge on the face-offs in the firstquarter, the Blue Devils with theirtakeaways, took a 3-1 lead. Wornowscored the first goal on a neat curlingmaneuver and sprint down the rightcenter to ripple the net with 5:30 onthe clock. It took only 30 seconds forLantine to knot the score but Bondscored with :54 remaining on a shotsimilar to Wornow’s but with a curland sprint down the left center.

“When we scouted, Nicky [Bond]and I knew that the two poles weregoing to come out and press us all theway out on the field. Nicky scored thesame way on the second goal. Prettymuch our mentality was we can get

the ball around if we pull them highthen run by them. If we can get ourhands free, anyone on our offense canbury that shot,” Wornow explained.“It really came down to them pressingdown and us being able to beat themwith our speed.”

Just 10 seconds later, McLane fedRittendale on his goal. Early in thesecond quarter, Rittendale intercepteda pass and returned the favor toMcLane, who scored with 9:56 left inthe half.

“Ritt and I have some good chem-istry because we have been playingtogether for a long time. Ritt made anice play. He intercepted a pass andwe got a goal. We were able to push intransition,” McLane explained.

One minute later,Wornow pushed in hissecond goal then twominutes later, McLanenotched his second goalto put the Blue Devils inthe driver’s seat, 6-2.Although there were nogoals in the third quar-ter, Rittendale was de-nied another score whenRed Devil keeper NolanRiche stopped hispointblank shot.

Three minutes intothe fourth quarter Billscored then with 6:30remaining Parkerscored on a sidearmshot. From that point, the Blue Devils’ defenseand McCauley reallytightened the reins.

The trip to face theBridgewater-RaritanPanthers is certainly nota rare occasion.

“They ended our sea-son the past two years,so we are coming out

hot. We are ready,” McLane stated.“I think it’s going to come down to

our focus in practice, what we do forscouting. Like in this game, we wereprepared for everything they broughtout. I think we can do somethingspecial out there,” Wornow expressed.

“Bridgewater is a tough team butnothing we can’t handle. I knowBridgewater really well. The rivalrywith Bridgewater has grown. Theyplayed us in swimming in the statechampionships, football, lacrosse thepast few years. I enjoy playing them. They play hard. It’s going to be atough game but I think we are up tothe challenge,” McCauley said.Hunterdon Central 1 1 0 2 4Westfield 3 3 0 0 6
