We are getting closer to the purpose of Advent Advent is a difficult season. It is difficult not to jump the gun on Christmas when we are surrounded by Christmas carols and Christmas music. Yet Advent is a time of joyful anticipation. With the help of the Scripture readings, especially from the Old Testament prophets, we are encouraged to reflect upon the purpose for which Christ has come and, in many ways, still needs to come: the realization of God’s dream for our world. The Advent season invites us to rekindle our dependence on God, to rekindle our desire for God and to discover through the waiting what it is to hope for that certainty that God does indeed come. And what way for God to come: as Emmanuel, God-among-us! It is hoped that what we do in these weeks of Advent makes us ready to touch base again with the awe-some mystery from which we are privileged to live in faith. Advent Penitential Service, Tuesday, December 16 at 7:00 p.m. In Advent, we come together as a parish community to reflect on how much we, as individuals and as a parish community, stand in need of the mercy and forgiveness that God offers us in Jesus Christ. Without the tender mercy of our God and without the forgiveness of our sins, we cannot be the kind of people God wants us to be. That is the focus of our communal Advent penitential service, Tuesday, December 16 at 7:00 p.m. This service prepares us to celebrate the saving mystery of God’s forgiveness in a more personal way in individual confession. Priests will be available immediately after the penitential service to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

Guignolée Thanks to all who organized and participated in the Guignolée this year. A special thanks to the Knights of Columbus who provided and served the lunch! Your help was greatly appreciated. Poinsettias for our Church’s Christmas Decoration The Christmas Season is a time when the deceased who have been part of our lives are on our minds and especially in our hearts. We may want to give tangible expression by bringing a poinsettia to the church for Christmas, the Feast of God’s love for all, the living and the dead. In that light, the poinsettia serves as a sign of our continued affection for those who have died and as an expression of faith that the dead are embraced by God’s love. You can start bringing the Poinsettias in on Thursday, December 18. Thank you! Do you have some time to spare after the 11:00 a.m. Mass, Dec.21? Many hands make light work! Please stay for some time after the 11:00 Mass on December 21 to join the fellowship and fun of making the church beautiful for Christmas. This is a fun activity for the whole family! Our Advent Giving Tree During Advent, we are invited to make the crooked paths straight, to think of people who have less than we do. The Giving Tree is our attempt to reach out to those who are in need. We will be handing out the gifts and gift cards at the Celebration of Love on Saturday, December 20, so please make sure that you hand in your gift by December 17. St. Mark’s Third Annual Christmas Celebration of Love: Second collection this Sunday For the past two years, some generous friends of Fr. Dan’s offered to provide most of the food for a Christmas dinner for the people in our community who otherwise might not be able to have such a meal or fellowship at Christmas. It is a beautiful sign of love in our community! While much of the food is offered by friends of Fr. Dan, there are some additional expenses for this event. There will be a second collection at all the Masses next Sunday to help cover these expenses. Thank-you for your generosity in making this event an exceptional experience for the less fortunate of our community! Stars on the Christmas tree: Is there one for your family? After the 11:00 Mass on the last Sunday of Advent (December 21), we will be decorating the church for Christmas. We will put up a big Christmas tree at the entrance to the church, which will be decorated with many gold stars. Each star has the name of one of the families in our parish. Please note that the names on the tree are those of registered parishioners only – another good reason to pick up a parishioner registration form at the back of the church and return it to a hospitality minister or to Fr. Dan.

Choristers Needed for Christmas Masses We are looking for singers to help lead the singing for this year's Christmas Masses. There is a particular need for choristers at the 9pm Mass on Christmas Eve and the 10am Mass on Christmas Day. There will be a practice in the church following the 11am Mass on Sunday, December 21 from 12-1:30. No formal singing experience is required! Instrumentalists are also welcome. Please contact Chris if you're interested (819) 661-4247 or [email protected]. 2015 Collection Envelopes Boxes Collection envelopes are available for pick-up after all the Masses this week-end. Please be sure to pick up your envelopes from the tables in the back of Marrevee Room. Take note: Christmas Mass times are different this year Please note that a Mass has been added on Christmas Eve to accommodate the large numbers who usually come to the 7:00 p.m. Mass, and requests from young families for an earlier Mass. The Mass times for Christmas Eve will be December 24: 5:00 p.m., 7:00 p.m., and 9:00 p.m.; Christmas Day: 10:00 a.m. There will be no Mass on Friday, December 26th. Upcoming Meetings and Events
