New Peak hour rail serviceCommuters are backing the redcliffe peninsula line, with new data has revealing two local stations in the top five for patronage growth in south east Queensland.

Mango hill east saw a big rise in passengers opting to catch the train, with patronage increasing by 35 per cent, and Murrumba Downs saw patronage jump 21 per cent, when comparing patronage from october to December 2018 and the same period the previous year.

state government suggested their Fairer Fares program, connectivity to local train stations via the 12km shared path and new bike lockers were just some of the initiatives helping to incentivise train travel while announcing a new peak inbound service would be introduced from May 13.

the service will operate from kippa-ring station to Central station, departing at 7.10am from Monday to Friday.

maNgo hill crimes iNvestigatedpolice are investigating after two armed men confronted a woman and forced her into a vehicle before robbing her in Mango hill on the afternoon of May 2.

a local woman was walking along halpine Drive between midday and 1pm when a white Ford sedan, possibly an older style Falcon, pulled up alongside her. a male passenger exited the vehicle and began to speak with the woman.

as she turned to walk away towards Mango hill railway station, the driver of the sedan hopped out of the car and stood in front of her holding a firearm, while the passenger produced a knife. the pair then forced the woman into the back seat of the vehicle and demanded money before dropping her off in kallangur.

the male passenger is described as having a dark complexion with a thin build, curly black hair, aged around 27 to 30-years-old and spoke with an accent. he was wearing black shorts, a red-t-shirt, and white running shoes.

the driver of the sedan is described Caucasian in appearance with long shoulder length blonde hair, around 175-180cm tall and aged in his mid 20’s. he

North Lakes Counselling Services

hello leonie,

i love you and the Messenger and would really love your opinion on this problem i am a mess over.

My son is been totally frozen out of his own pregnancy by his wife and his in-laws. his wife insists that she is the one carrying the baby, it’s her body and she has the right to not only name the child but make all pre-natal and post-natal care planning regarding the pregnancy and the birth.

her sister works in a child care centre and she has said that she will be going back to work, and her mother and her sister will share care. having grown up with a mum and a sister who have worked at child care centres for years, my son does not want his child placed in child care and he does not want the mother in law over there and interfering all the time.

they act as though he has no rights at all concerning this child’s care and many other important and permanent decisions.

the foot and mouth disease, the lice, not to mention parents and the staff and many other factors have shown my family that children do better in a home environment.

there is nothing sadder than to see those little faces just waiting to be picked up (often right on 6pm closing) then its food bath and bed. its institutionalisation for these kids if you ask me.

i find myself getting angry at my son for

not putting his foot down about all this. he has parental rights that are being ignored. she says its her body and things will be done her way or she will leave and take the child away.

bea/Mango hill

hi bea,

the first thing that i would want to explore with you is that you can’t take ownership of your sons’ problems or figure out solutions for him. these are his issues and i would encourage you to see your role as a supportive one and not an active one.

secondly no matter how your son’s marriage turns out, he and your family will not lose access to any children that are born to the union unless he is deemed as an unfit parent. this is very unlikely.

i have had clients whose partners have had substance abuse issues and criminal records and still have child access. so, given that your son sounds like he is going to be a great dad, he will always have his kid/s in his life even if it is only 50% of the time. i believe that days when the courts automatically give the mother almost everything are long gone.

this is a problem that lots of men face and they can often feel like a donor rather than an equal parent as all the excitement of the pregnancy is often focused on the mother. i feel that your son’s marriage would benefit from better communication and an open and honest discussion of how being left out

of this pregnancy is affecting him and is actually trampling on his rights.

however, i feel that it is up to him to make this happen, not you or any other member of the family. it is only natural that seeing your son hurting about this is upsetting for you and the rest of the family, but he is the only one who can make positive changes in his life and his parental role. Family interference can cloud the issue, cause tension in relationships and cause an “Us against them” mentality that can be hard to bounce back from.

i would suggest that if your son comes to you for advice, don’t engage in a bitch session about your daughter in-law, but rather stay supportive and let him talk it through with you without offering solutions to the problem. perhaps you could recommend couples counselling if he asks you if you have any ideas about what to do.

Good communicators learn about the top 12 communication blockers and we call these the “Dirty Dozen”. sending solutions is one of the Dirty Dozen because if you keep offering ideas of how to fix a problem, you are often not allowing the other party to really talk through their feelings and come to their own independent solutions in their own time. validating a person’s feelings, allowing them to be fully heard and letting them do an autopsy on a situation is often very helpful.

til next week, leonie

Queensland health poison specialists say they are getting calls from worried parents whose children have consumed

the contents of, or been exposed to, everyday household items.

“Most families are focused on ensuring their toddlers cannot get their hands on medications and chemicals, and rightly so,” Queensland poisons information Centre manager Carol wylie said.

“however, many household products that may seem otherwise innocuous can also be harmful to the health of their children. they can’t be overlooked.

“we get at least one call a day from parents whose children have tried to consume gel discs in toilets. Many of these products contain cleaning agents that could make a child sick."

“we also regularly get calls about toddlers swallowing antiseptic hand gel, which are typically alcohol-based. toddlers often pluck bottles of the gel out of handbags or off benches and they can become ill if they ingest the contents.

“Dishwashing and laundry detergents can also be a problem.”

over the counter medicines more common during winter can pose a risk is not treated properly. Queenslnad health suggests not taking medication in front of children and void calling child medication “lollies”. always take only as directed and return expired medicines, or ones that are no longer needed, to your local pharmacy for disposal. you can also ask your pharmacist to dispense medicine in child resistant containers.

but that's not the only risk during winter, Ms wylie said the fluid used in steam vaporisers, which are used to ease nasal congestion, also posed hazards for youngsters.

“in cooler months, parents will set up vaporisers in their children’s rooms to help them breathe easier and sleep better,” Ms wylie said.

“Care should be taken to ensure they cannot get to these devices – not only can they cause burns but the liquids or oils used can cause illness if consumed, especially gastric issues. we get regular calls about children swallowing vaporiser fluids, often directly from the unit.”

Ms wylie said people with small children should carefully check their home to ensure potentially harmful products and substances were out-of-reach, locked away or, if they were no longer needed, properly disposed of. places where children regularly visited, such as grandparents’ homes, should also be checked.

symptoms associated with exposure to items such as hand gels, toilet discs and vaporiser liquids varied but the signs to heed include: stomach upsets and vomiting; coughing; listlessness; changes in breathing or heart rates; and rash or itchy eyes;.

“the most important thing is for parents to remain calm and seek advice by calling the poisons information Centre on 13 11 26 if an exposure occurs or is suspected,” Ms wylie said.

“you may be reassured the child is okay or advised to see medical assistance.”

the poison information Centre receives around 34,000 calls a year – an average of 95 a day – from people with concerns ranging from exposure to chemicals and consumption of medications to bee stings and animal bites. More than half of the patients are children.

kate is running out of time and she needs our help. her immediate goals are to turn 30 next year be able to see her beautiful daughter walk through the school gates for her first year of school.

Waste not, Want notFRee CoMpost woRkshops and CoUnCil’s FRee MUlCh and MUlCh loading, this week.

Moreton bay regional Council is calling on residents to help reduce the amount of food scraps and garden waste going

to landfill as part of international Compost awareness week.

Council's spokesperson for waste services, Councillor adam hain said residents could turn their homes into a sustainable environment by applying some simple techniques.

“last year, more than 62,000 tonnes of garden waste was delivered to Council’s waste management facilities for mulching and turning into compost for your garden,” he said.

“if you want to learn how to make your own compost, but don’t know how, then i encourage you to attend our free composting and worm farming workshops."

“reusable options in your own backyard for lawn clippings and food scraps allows these nutrients to work for you, rather than buried in a landfill."

“why not grow fruit, vegetables and herbs in your garden, which will enhance your household sustainability; you don’t have to water as much because the compost helps the soil to retain moisture.

“since 2009, over 19 schools and 33 early

learning Centres in our region have adopted sustainable practices."

as part of iCaw, between saturday 11 and sunday 12 May, Council will offer free mulch loading for residents at the bunya, Caboolture, Dakabin and redcliffe waste Facilities from 9am and noon.

For more information and to book a seat in council’s free compost workshops and council’s free mulch and mulch loading, available during iCaw, visit www.moretonbay.qld.gov.au/services/waste-recycling/rethink-waste/waste-Campaigns or call 3205 0555.

reaL estateQueensLand property industry Continues deCLineReFleCting national sentiMent

For the first time since the survey’s inception, confidence across Queensland’s property industry has declined for the third

consecutive quarter according to the latest anZ/property Council Confidence survey.

industry sentiment in Queensland has dropped from 118 index points to 113 index points, while national industry confidence has decreased from 123 index points to 115 index points.

over the past 12 months, confidence in Queensland has declined 26 points on the index and is now at levels not seen since the post GFC period through 2011-13.

the property Council’s Queensland executive Director, Chris Mountford, says the decline in sentiment should be a big wake-up call in the lead up to the Queensland state budget in June.

“over the past 12 months, the industry’s expectations regarding national and state economic growth have dropped sharply,” Mr Mountford says.

“From a financing standpoint we have obviously seen much tighter lending requirements having an effect. but we shouldn’t forget that recent state budgets in Queensland have also piled on the pressure, significantly increasing taxes on property in this state. its been a double whammy.”

“as the Government begins to work on the state budget, policy makers should be ramping up efforts to support the property industry, restoring confidence in Queensland and creating new jobs.”

“it is imperative that the Queensland Government steps up and utilises this budget to deliver policies that will remove obstacles to job creating investment. eliminating bureaucratic red tape and alleviating heavy tax burdens is the first step.”

“reversing Queensland’s additional land tax slug introduced in the last budget, abandoning the additional foreign acquirer duty which has driven away foreign investors, and restoring the full first home owners grant to $20,000 are actions that would go a long way in restoring industry confidence and generating activity.”

“particularly in tougher economic times, Queensland needs to position itself as the most attractive place to invest in australia. recent decisions to follow other states down the higher taxes path has been to our detriment, and we need to correct our course.” explained Mr Mountford.

lastest lening figures from the australian bureau of statistics show that the number of loans for housing, excluding refinancing, continues to decline.

“overall the figures for February 2019 show, in trend terms that the number of owner-occupied finance commitments, excluding refinancing, decreased by 1.4 per cent – the seventeenth consecutive month of decreases and the lowest since January 2013,” reia president adrian kelly said.

“in trend terms decreases were recorded in all states and territories except tasmania which had a modest increase of 0.6 per cent. the largest decrease of 3.2 per cent was in the northern territory.”

Mr kelly said value of investment housing commitments, excluding refinancing, increased

by 3.9 per cent in February, in trend terms, but is 41 per cent of the June 2015 peak.

“the proportion of first home buyers, as part of the total owner-occupied housing finance commitments decreased in February to 17.7 per cent from 17.9 per cent in January."

“there are a number of reasons for the continued decline in housing finance one of which is the concern about changes to property taxation and its impact should there be a change in Government."

“there is a clear risk that the decline in activity in the residential property market will become a major drag on the economy,” concluded Mr kelly.
