Timber frames require diagonal bracing or shear planes for lateral stability and mayqualify as heavy timber construction if used with noncombustible, fire-resistiveexterior walls.(Ching 2008, page5.03)

Masonry---Bricks

Masonry walls consist of modular building blokcs bonded together with mortar toform walls that are durable, fire-resistant, and structurally efficient in compression. The most common types of masonry units are bricks, which are heat-hardenedunits.(Ching 2008 Page5.14)

3_CONSTRUCTION SYSTEM AND FUNCTION OF MEMBERS

·Frame construction system

Exterior walls: protect shield against the weather for the interior spaces of a building.their construction should control the passage of heat, infiltrating air, sound, moisture, and water vapor. The exterior skin, which may be either applied to orintegral with the wall structure, should be durable and resistant to the weatheringeffects of sun, wind, and rain. (Ching 2008 page5.02)

The interior walls (partitions): subdivide the space within a building, may be eitherstructural or nonloadbearing, their construction should be able to support thedesired finish materials, provide the required degree of acoustical separation, andaccommodate when necessary the distribution and outlets of mechanical andelectrical services. (Ching 2008 page5.02)

Stud: studs carry vertical loads while sheathing or diagonal bracing stiffens the planeof the wall.(Ching 2008, page5.03)

Cross bracing: resist shear loads.

Nogging: horizontal members which run parallel with the top and bottom platesbetween the studs and used to straighten the centre of the wall and provide lateral

support to the studs. Certain numbers of noggings are required depending upon thestud height.(Abis 2013, Nogging)

Prefabricated wood trusses: used in the place of dimension lumber to frame floorsbecause its generally lighter and more dimensionally stable than sawn lumber, aremanufactured in greater depths and lengths, and can span longer distances.(Ching2008, page4.33)

Joist: the horizontal members that span two walls and/or beams—have to carry theweight of the walls, people, furniture, appliances and other stuff.

·three stories.

·It uses bricks to contribute exterior wall, and the colour of this material is very closeto nature, most people like masonry building as it’s connect with naturalenvironments.

·The owner put their spa in the backyard, they are really enjoy the life.

7_STAGE OF WORKS. DESCRIPTION AND IMPLICATIONS

Week 3 ~ Week 5: wall system

Week 6 ~ Week 8: floor system (because they’ve already finished the ground floor, the floor in here means first floor and second floor)

Stage of Works: frame stage.

This stage is important because the either wall or first(second) floor support all thedead loads(roof etc.) and live loads (people, furnitures etc.) around the house, and itdecides the stability of a building. It have to resist the shear load, such as wind orearthquakes.

CONCLUSION

Above content are the obervation I noticed during these 6 weeks, I’ve learnt manythings about materials, constructural types and structural systems of wall and floorsystems from tracing a full-scale process.
