The title A100 symbolizes the beginning of my architectural career, with licensure and a future in academia as eventual goals. This portfolio shows work from my M.arch studies in the Studio 804 Design/Build program led by Dan Rockhill at the University of Kansas, and my Professional work with the KTGY Group and GraceHebert Architects.

I believe Nietzsche’s quote on describing the developmental stages needed to obtain greatness is the same methodology for learning inherent in the practice of architecture. One cannot just enter the field of architecture and assume he/she can design great buildings, rather one must first cross necessary thresholds before satisfying that goal. Architecture takes several layers of learning, building, and failing to obtain clarity through design and success within the field we walk through daily.

Various travels, including a 70-day trip throughout Europe awakened me to the cultural significance and historical contribution of its art and its people to Western civilization. Later, a fifth-year philosophical elective on existence and architecture further broadened my views about the profession. I now realize that architecture lies in the details. Details of a building’s structure, materiality, and function are integral to great design. As Mies van der Rohe said, “God is in the details.” The details of a building reveal the architect behind it.

“He who would learn to fly one day must first learn to walk and run and climb and dance; one cannot fly into flying. ”

Friedrich Nietzsche

The goal of the Galileo Pavilion was to create an environment, which is anode of activity and interaction on the Johnson County Community College campus. Located to the southwest of the Science Building, the building incorporates and enhances the existing Galileo Sculpture, and amplifies the artist’s concept of working with the sun. The design of the site plays a pivotal role in the pedestrian traffic patterns on the south end of campus. The building is arranged on the site around a courtyard, blending indoors and outdoors with a visual connection between the spaces.

Caldarium - Tepidarium - Frigidarium | The purpose of the bath house project was to improve understanding of the nature of temperature and comfort. I was required to design three distinct pools in such a way that the user could enjoy a varied sensory experience of stimulation, relaxation, and refreshment. Tonal drawings were used to convey ideas of atmospheric conditions for each particular pool space.

A201 | DENVER GARDENS | KTGY GROUP

The Denver Gardens Senior Residence project, located in Denver Colorado is a 55,000 sq. ft. building designed to offer 50 residences, along with 10,000 sq. ft. of office space on the 5th floor. Since the adjacent housing properties are a mere 3 stories tall, the client requested high visibility on the 5th floor for unobstructed views to the mountains. This was my very first character/formal study for the KTGY Group.

The DTC Clubhouse project is an addition to an existing project located in a trendy, young neighborhood filled with several competitive multi-family housing projects. The client desired colors and forms that wouldset this residence apart from others in the neighborhood.

Roofing Solutions was the very first project I was given full control of to design and manage. Unfortunatly after CD production was complete and permitting was to begin, the client decided he wanted to move in another direction with his assets. This project has remained unforseen, but a great learning experience none the less.

A204 | PRIMORIS | GRACEHEBERT

The Primoris Services Corporation is my first official project to become realized. Located in Gonzales, Louisiana this building is a tilt wall - new construction, 35,000 s.f. office building. GraceHebert is teamed up with Bouquet & Leblanc on a Fee + Cost budget. Still in progress, this building has been a huge learning experience from a design to CA project for myself and hopefully the first of more to come.

A301 | PODS

The goal of the project was to create a module, or pod, that could be prefabricated within the warehouse and dropped off on site with the least amount of site disturbance as possible. The problem was circulation between each pod once placed on the site. Circulation was implemented within the middle of each pod, creating a vestibule with entries and exits on both the east and west axis. Once on site, a deck and canopy system was fabricated to bring the pods visually together as one form.

Residual spaces are articulated through pathways and overhead canopies between each pod. Each pod in plan was placed so each classroom would have the ability to open outward to its adjacent walkway. During nice weather the user would have the option to expand into the exterior space.

Studio 804 gave me the opportunity to experience a different approach to architecture. Architecture with the mind-set of using renewable forms of energy, understanding the importance of site location, and utilizing recycled material from various locations across the country. Since school,I have become LEED AP BD+C certified, and have managed 4 projects.

Black and white photography has become a passion of mine since taking an elective at the University of Kansas. The art of processing and developing my own photographs is challenging and intriguing. There is a relationship between particular facets of photography and some components of architecture which make the art so appealing. The ability to capture time, space, form, and lighting - all within one frame - is the beauty to which I am drawn.
