Album CoverAs you can see there is no image
associated with the song here however the
Artists name ‘Ben Howard’ and the song
‘The Wolves’ have been link in together to
create an effect to show a link between the
song and the artist.
As you can see, there is a dark
nature about the song and it
has had a filter put over the
camera lens to create the effect
you expect when you come
across wolves.
Technical AspectsAs you can see, there has been a
filter used along with the camera
to create the effect given, it gives
the picture a slightly more matted
effect and it also creates and
atmosphere that works well with
the song.
Long shot of the people walking
with the furniture.
Once again a filter has been used
along with the camera, however this
time it is in a darker environment so it
adds to the atmosphere even more.
Mid shot of Ben Howard playing the
guitar and humming.
Technical AspectsYou can see a mid-long shot of the
artist ‘Ben Howard’ performing in a
band.
This part of the music video does not
follow any narrative because it is of
the artist performing, however this is
not the same throughout the video.
In this part of the video, you can
see a man ‘Ben Howard’ running
from the wolves in long shot, this
could also be seen as a point of
view (POV) shot as you could
imagine the camera being the eyes
of the wolves them
themselves, here there is narrative
being followed.
Conventions/Genre/Meanin
gIt shows that the video follows narrative
hear as the pictures are linked with the
lyrics.
‘Falling from high places’ this screen
shot shows that the shot is from low to
high and this relates to the lyrics.
Here you can also figure out a
genre for the music as
everything is shot in a similar
way and with the same or similar
filters on the camera. The genre
is Folk rock.
‘Towers been tumbling down’ this
is also narrative as you can see
the towers in the background are
destroyed
Conventions/Genre/Meanin
g ‘I’ve lost my patience with the
lord’ this is showing meaning as
the camera is going from low to
high and looking up at the bright
sky to show as if the lord was
looking down on him.
I also believe that this enforces
the Folk rock genre as it is
narrative based and you can
relate the lyrics to the picture
easily. You can see through the screenshots I
have taken, that this video is
narrative, however the shots of the
band playing show that he is showing
the production of it as well, not only is it
narrative but he is preforming the song
throughout the video.
GoodwinAmplification – You can always see Ben Howard
performing the song throughout the video, constantly
reminding you that he is the one who has created the
music.
Illustration – ‘Now that there is no where to
go’ this screenshot shows that they are
walking into the distance with nothing in front
of them therefore they haven't got a specific
destination. Disjuncture – Here the artist says ‘Where you
been hiding lately’ this picture of him singing it
has nothing related to the narrative part of the
story and it is clearly not related to it.
CarlsonBen Howard is a
commercial exhibitionist in
the way he portrays his
specific look in his styling
and his videos.
You can see here that he is wearing a
hoody and a indie style of clothing, lots of
people aspire to be like him therefore
they will want to dress similarly to him.
Here again you can see him performing
along with one of his band members and
they are both dressed in a very similar
fashion, this shows that he isn't keen on
changing his style as it works well with
his music.
Shore
These pictures show that there is
a reason why he is sitting and
performing in a surreal setting
because it shows that the lyrics
mean a lot to him and he is
emotionally attached with the
music.
Similar here, you can see him
performing along with his band
member to show that he has
created this piece of music and
he wants it to be clear to every
one that it is his and nobody
else's.
