Membership cards will be available for pick-up at the AAG Building during the following times:

Thursdays: (9:30-12:30 AM) on Oct. 4th, 11th and 18th.
Membership cards, one copy of directory and newsletters will be mailed to those members who included postage ($45).
Reminder: Passwords and user names will change as of Oct. 1st, 2012. You will find them on the back of your membership card. Last years passwords and user names will provide access to the online database and by-laws until September 30, 2012.
September AAG Meeting Zarco Guerrero
The September 18th program will be a presentation by Zarco Guerreo. The meeting will be at the AAG building and starts at 7 PM.
Zarco Guerrero has had one-man shows in Mexico and throughout the United States. He is the founder of Xicanindio Artes, Inc., a non profit organization dedicated to better understanding of Latino and Native American arts in Mesa, AZ, and he also co-founded Cultural Coalition.com in Phoenix.
In 1984, PBS broadcasted nationally a one hour documentary about his art entitled The Mask of El Zarco. In 1986, he was awarded the prestigious Japan Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts and spent one year in Kyoto, Japan studying the Noh Masks as an apprentice to Joshun Fukakusa. From Japan, the artist investigated mask carving in Bali, Indonesia and China.

AAG Sculptors' GroupThe AAG Sculptors' Group meeting on Tuesday, September 4th, 2012, will be the 2nd annual Merkel Found Object Fish Competition. If you haven't begun yet, now is the time to get started on your submission. This is an informal, fun exhibition started last year. This year, we've opened up the competition to the entire AAG. It will be fun to see what folks have come up with. The meeting starts at 7:00 PM.

President’s Message Welcome back from the summer—I look forward to seeing all of you at the Members’ Meeting on September 18 th. I think you’ll find the coming nine months at the Guild will be full and exciting. To get an idea of what I mean, I encourage you to go to the website (www.arizonaartistsguild.net,) and click the “AAG Calendar of Events” tab. Yes, we now have a full calendar of Guild events for the next nine months available to you on line. And, when I say full, I mean very full:
• You asked for opportunities to exhibit—there are eight Guild exhibits.• You asked for social/networking opportunities—there are receptions, pre-meeting social times, studios, coffee klatsches, a Brunch and Bargain, Artstravaganza, a TEDx, potluck, and outings planned.• You asked for learning opportunities—there are eight speakers and four Guild School of Art workshops, plus critiques, and special sessions for Associate Members.
Your all-volunteer leadership team has been very busy this summer planning a fun and enriching AAG 2012-2013 program. Now all we need is for you to participate. To quote the old Fonzarello, “Be there, or be square”.

Outing to Red Rock Crossing Art on the Rocks! Enjoy a day of Plein Air Art - drawing, painting, photography, and/or sculpture at scenic Red Rock Crossing in Sedona, Arizona. The picturesque landscape provides a variety of subjects from the south face of Cathedral Rock formation with Oak Creek at its base. The high desert of the Colorado Plateau provides an array of scenery with its riparian vegetation and fauna, perhaps even with some families enjoying the water.
Caravan from the AAG building on Sunday, October 28th at 8:00 AM. Bring a sack lunch and plenty of water, since the park is several miles from town. We will dine together in Sedona before driving home.

Arizona Art Alliance Call to Artists...Honoring Our Veterans & America-What a Great Country!November 1st - 25th, 2012
FREE PANELS for VETERANS!! Participating veterans in the November show will be able to display their work at no charge & do not have to submit a CD, just a photo of their entry and an application. The cut off date for Veterans has been extended to September 29th by 5 PM for the Veterans show. Spread the word... the November show is FREE to Veterans!
Applications/Images are due Friday October 19th by 5 PM for AAA Juried artists who wish to participate in America-What a Great Country!

Mesa Arts Center - Fire & Ice
Mesa Arts Center Season Kickoff, Fire & IceSeptember 14th, 20126 PM through 10 PM Fire & Ice is an event that will coincide with MAC’s opening reception on September 14th. There will be fiery demonstrations of glass blowing, casting, lamp working, and neon showcasing the diversity of contemporary art glass and mesmerizing theatrics of when sand meets fire. There will be live music, food booths, ice carving, fire spinners and a play zone for kids.

AAG BenefitOne of the benefits of being an Arizona Artists Guild member is the opportunity to exhibit in the Arizona Art Alliance Gallery located in The Pavillions at Talking Stick, 9175 East Indian Bend Road (Indian Bend Road and the 101.) Regular exhibitions are two-months long; one-month exhibits are scheduled twice a year.Anyone who is a dues paying member of any of the participating art groups (ie: AAG) is automatically a member of the Alliance.
Artists with work in the Gallery are required to volunteer in the Gallery 8 hours a month (There are no paid positions in AAA.).
To be a juried member of the AAA and eligible for their shows/exhibits, you must go through a process of becoming juried. AAG Figurative Group presents: Bella FiguraThe Figurative Group of the Arizona Artists Guild is proud to present, Bella Figura: a two-person show featuring the contemporary figurative works of artists Ann Osgood and Robert Roselli. Celebrated throughout the ages, most notably during the Renaissance era, figurative art has fallen in and out of vogue with artists and collectors alike in favor of emerging, often avant-garde, movements. Roselli and Osgood depict the figure in refreshing, expressionistic paintings that expand the boundaries of what one thinks of when considering figurative art.
Both Osgood and Roselli were raised in California and studied art formally. The similarities end there. Ann Osgood graduated from the University of Hawaii with a BFA in drawing and painting and then moved to Arizona where she taught art from first grade through college. Her award winning artwork is in public and private collections.
Using gestural brushstrokes and bold color, Osgood enjoys the dialogue between abstraction and representation. "I feel most successful when the painting conveys the message of the subject while showing a loose expressive approach." To achieve this, Osgood must give up control and let the work dictate what comes next. Each new painting sets up its own challenges and the discovery of solutions is the result."I hope in that process the image achieves its own beauty beyond the subject it began with."Robert Roselli studied art at the Art Institute in Los Angeles, and the Pasadena Art School while living in California. After moving East, he studied at the prestigious Art Students League in New York City. In addition, Roselli studied culinary arts and at one time owned his own restaurant.
Inspired by primitive art as well as the abstract expressionists, Roselli's work conveys a specific idea, thought or emotion through the use of simplified form, color, texture and overall composition. His work is powerful due to the combination of techniques and mediums required to create them. From the first few sketches outlining the composition, the pieces emerge with paint, charcoal, sometimes collage and often times an application of paint with a toothbrush. Making marks, whether with a pencil, a conventional paintbrush, or the toothbrush convey the intensity or the delicacy of the emotion Roselli wishes to convey.

The Figurative Group of AAG is an informal group whose members create figurative art in two-dimensional medium. Additionally, the group provides educational opportunities for members to develop artistic skills, an appreciation to further stimulate and encourage creative work that is figurative, and to discuss and produce bodies of work involving the figure. Co-chairs, Mark Woehrle and Tess Scherer, work closely with the Figurative Group members to create programs reflecting the members' interests and needs.
