    ARTOOL INSTRUCTOR SERIES: SKULLMASTER SERIES:

    Step 1: Mixing up some white, Idemonstrate one of the three sizes ofbullet holes the stencil has to offer. Thisdesign is the entrance hole, and itallows you to render the broken paintchip that would fly out from theindentation caused by the enteringbullet in the side of a painted surface.On a car, you might want to use a

    silver or ghostchrome to mimic theunderlying bare metal.

    Step 2: Using the correct hole size tomatch the chipped circle in step 1, theactual bullet hole is airbrushed usingHOK BC-25 basecoat black. Using thetransparency of the stencil, its importantto keep the hole centered with the paintchip.

    Step 3: With the same basecoat black, Iairbrush a slight shadow to give theillusion of depth. Prior to airbrushingthis surface, I lightly fogged a thin washof HOK BC-26 white over the panel.This allows my rendered shadows tostand out against the black background.

    Im proud to say that the previous issues coverage on the Pin Up GirlieStencils from Deborah Mahan was, by the strongreader response, a huge hit. For newcomers to this column, we systematically instruct on the use and techniquesrecommended for all the Artool stencils Ive created over the past six years. From Skull Masters to FX, to anything else we

    have laser cut out of plastic, were going to show you how they work, and a few tricks that we discovered accidentally alongthe way!

    This issues featured stencil is Bullet Ridden, a relatively simple design that has been known to baffle an airbrusher or twowith all its little gadgets. Its a member of the FXfive-stencil series, and is very popular in the bike and helmet painting arena.Using a black panel to simulate a pre-existing colored paintjob, Ill show you a few of the tricks that make Bullet Ridden a veryversatile stencil.

    Step 4: With an Eclipse CS and the

    white, I airbrush the exit hole, with themetal being slightly furled away.Remember to always include a few exitand entrance holes in your paint job. Ilike corresponding them on oppositesides of a tank for authenticity.

    Step 5: The same hole for the entrance is

    now used for the exit. Notice how itreally stands out against the foggedblack background. The stencil hasthree entrance sizes and exit holes for anice variety.

    Step 6: A little bit of shadow work with

    my HP-CH really makes this one standout.

    Step 7: Using the corresponding halfhole, I mask off the bottom edge of thebullet hole to prevent the renderedsmoke from overspraying onto the blackand killing the depth.

    Step 8: Both sides ofBullet Ridden offera nice smoke stencil. This simple stencilwith a bit of freehand white work givesa killer smoke effect. For long contrails,feel free to drag the stencil quickly inthe smokes direction as you airbrush.This gives a great effect.

    Step 9: Freehand airbrush the ends of thesmoke contrails that are breaking up.Keep your hand very light, and yourpaint very reduced to prevent spitting.

    Step 10: The final step in the smoke is a

    little black to cast the drop-shadowagainst the background. Remember,less is more and youll end up with aphoto-realistic smoke effect.

    Step 11: With white, I create a stipple

    effect to mimic stone.

    Step 12: With a little black, the cracked

    bullet hole works well with stone, wood,concrete, or pretty much any surfacethat tends to crack on impact.

    Step 13: A few cracks between existingbullet holes adds to the effect.

    Step 14: The white highlights really punchthe edge to top off a great technique.

    Step 15: On the same stippled stonebackground, I use the shotgun sectionof the stencil to demonstrate a nice blastpattern with the black.

    Step 16: Heres where your freehandskills pay off. Its a pain, but these littlehighlights are great up close andpersonal.

    Step 17: And what the heck is a buck-shotblast without a little furling smoke.Again, the individual edges of thestencil allow the realistic smoke effect. Itaped off sections to render the smokecleanly from the individual holes.

    Step 18: Last but not least is thespiderwebbed window effect. I addeda bit of white first to make it pop, andthen sprayed the radial pattern withblack basecoat.

    Step 19: With the black finished, a little

    freehanding brings out the smallspiderweb cracks, and really completesthe design. I imagine this stencilcould also help in rendering aspiderweb.

    Step 20: The final step and stencil trick

    are, as usual, the highlights. Thesesmall random highlights give thehaphazard look of reflecting safetyglass; exactly what I was going for.

    As you can see, there are quite a few

    uses for this little stencil: renderingphotorealistic bullet holes on the side ofyour bike, tricking out a friends leatherjacket, or even hiding a few flaws in apaintjob, and much more. The BulletRidden stencil from FX-1 is definitely amust for any kustom painters arsenal.
