The prestigious Sherborne Girls school in Dorset, one of the country’s top academic boarding schools, has been home to the Absolutely English Young Learners programme since 2006.

Managed by the very experienced husband and wife team, Siân and Petro Choma, Absolutely English Young Learners welcomes young people from all over the world.

A Typical week at Absolutely English

Age groupsJuniors: aged 12 to 15 (12 in the year)Seniors: aged 16 to 17 (16 in the year)

At the beginning of the course, we assess your child’s level and needs in English so that we can make sure they are working in the right group, at the right speed and on relevant material to help them achieve their objectives.

Group LessonsWith a maximum of only 8 students in each group we make sure that your child gets the personal attention they deserve. Students are grouped according to age and level and every effort is made to mix nationalities. With a focus on speaking and listening, group lessons cover all skills, including reading and writing, according to your child’s needs. A variety of interactive lessons with a balance of pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary work is the key to maintaining interest, building confidence and maximising progress. Through project work your child will also learn about the history and geography of the local places they will visit on excursions and practise the language in lessons that they will use during these visits. Students will also learn about the English speaking world and culture and compare it to their own.

Individual LessonsIf your child has very specific needs like preparing for an exam or focussing on writing skills, or you feel they would benefit from working individually with a teacher, you can choose to supplement your child’s programme with 60 minute individual lessons.

Every day students prepare in house groups of maximum 12 for their performance in the Friday show. House groups are an opportunity to work in a team, make new friends and continue practising the language with a common goal of presenting the best performance.

Excursions are an opportunity to use English in real situations. Excursion destinations are researched in group lessons and relevant language taught. There is one half-day excursion each week and two one-day excursions for those staying over the weekend. For half-day excursions we choose more local destinations such as Weymouth, Salisbury, Glastonbury, Exeter and Wells. For the weekend excursions possible destinations include London, Bath, Bristol, Cardiff, Bournemouth and Plymouth.

During sports and leisure activities students are encouraged to continue practising their English through a variety of fun activities. The school has excellent sports facilities and students can choose from many activities including: tennis, badminton, volley ball, basketball, dance, table-tennis, football, swimming, aerobics, fitness and squash.

Or why not discover a new activity like american football, rugby, netball , cheerleading, fencing or rock climbing? As well as sport we offer arts and crafts, drama, IT and music.

Exceptionally high staff ratio to ensure your child’s progress, welfare and safety The safety of your child and the quality of our programme are paramount. That’s why we have an average of at least 1 staff member to 3 children on site - probably the highest staff ratio of all English language summer schools. We operate a 24 hour emergency number and students are never allowed off campus unsupervised. Our experienced welfare team is always at hand.

Personalised attention We have a maximum of 8 students in each class grouped according to age and level to ensure individual attention and maximum progress.

Quality and continuity The centre is owner-managed and the owners and members of our permanent year-round team are present throughout the programme to ensure quality and the smooth running of the centre. We care about our staff and in 2010 over 60% of them, including all our managers, returned from previous years.

High standards of teaching Our qualified teachers are committed to improving your child’s English language skills. They are managed by our highly qualified Academic Management team.

Safe location and excellent facilities The prestigious Sherborne Girls school, is located in the charming town of Sherborne in Dorset. Sherborne is a safe, picturesque location of historical interest in one of England’s most beautiful counties. The school is surrounded by 40 acres of grounds and offers outstanding sports and leisure facilities, including a brand new 25 metre indoor swimming pool and fitness suite, playing fields and a floodlit Astroturf pitch, dance studio, sports centre, climbing wall, and 27 tennis courts including grass courts. There are also 3 IT suites and two modern classroom blocks with interactive whiteboards.

Accommodation On-site accommodation in individual cubicles, single and double rooms, with pleasant lounges for relaxation. Boys and girls are in separate accommodation in their age groups.

Airport Service Our trained staff will meet your child at the airport and see them safely through passport control on departure. They will always wait if a flight is delayed. We recommend arriving at London Heathrow Airport or Bristol Airport.
