Introduction
Devotions are essential to the Christian life. They are not optional. Growing in your personal relationship with Jesus is necessary in your life as a Christ follower. It is His intention that you be shaped into His image more and more each day.
Use this process of journaling as a way to grow in Christ. Be diligent about this, since this key habit will bring about true fulfillment in your life.

What did this teach you about God?
After reading the chapter at least twice, go back through and look for any mention of God, Jesus or the Holy Spirit. Write out anything you discovered in regard to this question.

As you read scripture, you will find it often points out things you are personally dealing with. Be honest about what the chapter you read reveals to you about yourself and write it down.
What did this chapter teach you about your relationship with God?
Now take the first two questions and find how they relate. The passage you read may refer to how you relate to God as a believer or what God says about you. Write these down in this section.

As you read the Bible, it helps you in how you deal with others. In response to this question, look for ways the chapter dealt with how you are to conduct yourself in various relationships.

These books are written to the believers of Paul’s day, but the principles apply today as well. It is important to pick out promises listed in these books. Look specifically at what God is saying to you. Another question to ask - what does this chapter describe or teach a believer in Christ?
What does this chapter say about the Church?
These books are written, not only for individuals, but also for the Church body as a whole. Look for specific ways that the scripture describes church activity, church authority/leadership or anything else having to do with the church. Part of being a Christ follower is learning how to co-exist with other believers in the context of the local church.

The author may mention something about different members of the Godhead. Look for this and write it down. Ask, what is the divine involvement?
What do you want to pray about?
Now form a prayer based on all the information you read and studied. Write out this prayer and take the time to make sure you are specifically saying to God what is on your heart. Think of what the passage you read communicated to you and how this new knowledge translates into a prayer. Pray for what you believe God for and claim the promises or truth it says about you as a believer.

Relax:
Begin by praying for God to reveal His truth to you. Also take a few minutes to get your mind focused. Get all of the distractions out of the way. Sometimes you might need to just sit quietly with your eyes closed or even play some praise and worship music. Get your favorite drink or snack food. Do whatever it takes for you to get calm and quiet.
Read:
Start out by reading the chapter at least twice. If you read something at least twice, you have more chance of retaining it.
Rehearse:
Go back and look at what you read. Look for things like: key words, key verses and key phrases. As you see these, underline or circle these in your Bible. You may want to even use a highlighter.
Review:
What did this passage communicate? Now you are trying to write down a paragraph or at least a couple sentences about the main concept in this chapter.
Respond:
Now write down what this taught you and how you will live it out. Include action points - what you are going to do in response to what you just read. How did God speak to you through this passage?
