• Create your templates for your platoon status cards and squad status cards. Email them to your company TAC, BN TAC NCO, and PL.
• Remember, there are templates already being used in your BN’s. Use them to your advantage. Collaborate with the other PSG’s in your company to standardize your systems.

Counseling and Cadet Development
13
What are the five steps of CTM?
Why is it important to understand the five steps to develop your subordinate leaders?
14
• Set Expectations**CRITICAL**• Build Basic Skills• Give Feedback• Follow Through with Consequences• Work for Growth in Others
15
Counseling is a tool that NCO’s use to provide feedback to his or her subordinates. It can be grouped into broad categories of developmental or event oriented.
Can anyone describe the two categories or give an example
16
Developmental Counseling includes planning for the accomplishment of individual and professional goals. The counselor and cadet conduct a review to identify and discuss the cadets weaknesses and to create an individual developmental plan that builds upon those strengths and compensates for weaknesses.
17
Counseling based on certain events is recorded on CC Form 98. Examples are excessive demerits, unsatisfactory grades, failure of a CPFT, appointment to a new chain of command position, or any other positive or negative event.
18
Where does CAS fit into the counseling and cadet development process?
Can you use counseling statements as supporting documents in CAS?
19
• Arguably the most important thing you will do as you assume your duties
• Utilize CTM (Set Expectations pg. 8 CTM)• This will let the SLs know how you want to operate as a
platoon
What are some of the key areas that you should cover in your counseling?
Should you conduct this with all of your Squad Leaders at one time?
20
• How accountability will be conducted (be specific-use of status cards etc)
• Conduct of physical training and PT goals• Conduct of formations and PAI’s (include all uniform
expectations)• Room standards and inspections (include MRI and SMI)• Tasking management supervision and close out• Taking care of knobs
21
Utilize the CTM pg. 8 and NCO guide pg. 46 to create your initial counseling form for your squad leaders. Consider the criteria we discussed-you are NOT limited to just those. Keep in mind that initial counseling for cadre SL’s will differ from line SL’s. Email your Squad Leader initial counseling to your company TAC, BN TAC NCO, and PL.
There are already templates in use throughout the corps. Use them as a base and build from there. Collaborate with the other PSG’s within your company.
22
If you give 100% as you created your platoon products during academy homework assignments, you will be way ahead of the power curve once you return to school. Remember what you learned and always lead by example. Good luck.

• Who are your key players to get accountability?• What are some ways you can mitigate accountability
challenges?• What tools do you have available?• What are some of your challenges?
