• It was the political and administrative capital of the Chimu Kingdom. The original extension was more than 20 km2; currently covers only 14 km2, being considered as "The City of World's Largest Mud". The November 28, 1986, UNESCO declared Chan Chan Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Legend has it that two brothers found a small two-headed snake to that adopted, taking it to live with them. This animal was a demon that was growing daily, exponentially, as fed. When the snake reached the size of a man, the villagers forced the brothers to get rid of it.The brothers led the snake to the sea where, under false pretenses, abandoned it.The two-headed snake was eating everything in its path.All its inhabitants started to run away to the foot of the hill is now known as Cerro Blanco.At the time the two-headed snake came to eat them, Cerro Blanco opened and the villagers came all inside, and then the mountain closing its path. When the danger passed, the villagers emerged from the bowels of the mountain and this was closed. The black line running through the Cerro Blanco would be the scar left after this supernatural experience. Seeing that this mountain was magical and that the mountain god helped them hide from the snake, the villagers built in his honor the temple is now known as the Temple of the Moon and lived at his feet, on the ground the city now archaeologists and conservators try to undersatand the misteries and secrets of this place.
