ETOSHA NP

ETOSHA NATIONAL PARKEtosha (‘great white place’ in Herero, due to the bright sun) is one of the finestgame reserves to be found in SouthernAfrica and is a vital game reserve for theentire region. The park is home to 114species of mammal, 340 bird species, 110different reptiles, 16 species of amphib-ian and yet just one fish species … andall of this is found in the 22,000km2

(13,670 sq. miles) that make up the parknamed after the massive pan that coversa vast 5,000km2 (3,107 sq. miles), stretch-ing roughly 120km (74.5 miles) from east

to west and some 70km (43.5 miles)across at its widest point. The pan sel-dom boasts much water (if any) as it isfed by the rains rather than reliablerivers, and even when the rains fallhard, few areas fill up or flood due tothe incredibly high rate of evaporation.Etosha is best explored in your own carwithout a guide. The roads are good andthe open landscape allows for excellentwildlife spotting, although there are alsosections that are thick, bushy and wood-ed. Oryx (or gemsbok) tend to congre-gate around Etosha’s waterholes. Therainy season signals the arrival of sum-mer migrants in the form of mammalsand birds. In good years the pan will bealive with thousands of flamingoes. Thewestern reaches of Etosha feature someunique areas, including the fascinatingMoringa Forest or Haunted Forest, dubbed Sprokieswoud in Afrikaans. TheHaunted Forest is littered with weirdlycontorted moringa trees which were,

quite possibly, shaped by browsingherds of elephant and giraffe. Etosha hasthree main rest camps (Namutoni, Halaliand Okaukuejo) with perimeter fencingand superb floodlit waterholes whichcan be visited 24 hours a day. The parkwalked tall as the world’s largest gamereserve until the 1960s, when its surfacearea was (over time) reduced by nearly80%. Nonetheless, Etosha remains one ofAfrica’s largest and greatest parks.

KHAUDUM GAME PARKKhaudum is wild, four-wheel-drivecountry and while its remoteness mightadd to its charm, it also demands travel-ling in a group with adequate supplies. The lack of fencing around Khaudum(with the exception of the boundarywith Botswana) allows animals to leavethe park in search of fresh grazing andwater during the rainy season, thusensuring a proliferation of wildlife towatch, particularly wild dogs and roan

AN IDEAL BASE CAMPKatima Mulilo boasts really goodfacilities for travellers and is an excel-lent base to explore and embark onadventure activities, as it’s located onthe banks of the mighty ZambeziRiver, and it is an easy base to hopinto Zambia, Zimbabwe or Botswana.

antelope. Artificial waterholes providesome of the best wildlife spotting.Winter is best for game viewing, butyou’ll need patience: free-roaming ani-mals don’t take kindly to noise, particu-larly from humans and loud vehicles! The heavier summer rain thickens thedry woodland savanna (which is locatedon settled parts of the Kalahari’s sanddunes), which encourages a vibrantbirdlife for ‘twitchers’ to focus on.

THE WATERBERG PLATEAUThe Waterberg Plateau Game Park dom-inates the surrounding landscape, itssteep cliffs rise hundreds of metresabove the surrounding plains, makingthe plateau something of a refuge forwildlife. Many of Namibia’s endangeredspecies have been rehomed here to safe-guard them from poachers and preda-tors, and this animal paradise towers1,800m-plus (1,1118ft) above sea level.Due to its conservation success it sup-plies rare species of game and wildlife tomany of Namibia’s other parks. Itsamazing biodiversity also allows thissmall park to support a wide array ofanimals. You can drive around the parkon one of the organised game drives butNOT on your own: the animals prefer it

that way! Walking in the park providesincredible scenery and game viewing, with 200 bird species (black eagles andCape vultures), age-old dinosaur tracksand San rock art.

TSUMEBAttractive and laid back, Tsumeb’s namecan be translated to mean “to dig a holein loose ground”, appropriate for one ofNamibia’s key mining towns which hasattained a worldwide reputation in themining community. The TsumebMuseum offers visitors a window intothe past while the Tsumeb CulturalVillage is an open air museum thatallows a first-hand look at what triballife is all about in Namibia.

GROOTFONTEINMeaning ‘large fountain’ for its naturalsprings, Grootfontein’s fascinating OldFort Museum has interesting historicphotographs, gems, rocks and a displayon the old art of wagon and cart manu-facture. The 60-ton Hoba meteorite (thelargest recorded on earth) can be found50km (31miles) outside town. Almost3m2 (9.8ft2) and between 75–122cm(30–48in) thick, it may have celebratedin the region of 200 to 400 million birth-days. Hoba found its home here around80,000 years ago.
