When looking at the doubles and doubles + 1 facts, have your child

notice the patterns. First the patterns of the numbers as they

go down from top to bottom in each column and then how they

change going from left to right in the number sentence.

add: to find the sum of two whole numbers

number sentence: a sentence that uses an equal sign to indicate

that the expressions on either side of the equal sign stand for

    the same number.

    The Strategy of Count On

    Procedure:

Given the problem 9+2, start at the bigger number which is the 9

and then just count on 1011.

    Doubles and Doubles Plus 1

Procedure: Write a doubles problem 6+6=12. Then look at that

problem and say the first addend in your doubles + 1 problem will

be the same as it is in the doubles problem. The second addend

will be one digit higher as will the sum. 6+7=13

    Make a TenProcedure:

Make a ten frame on a piece of paper.

Give the child an addition number sentence such as 9+5.

Have the child start with the bigger addend first.

Have them write 9 x marks in red on the ten frame. Have them

take out a green crayon and make one x in green in the last box

counting that as one of their 5 and then 4 xs underneath the ten

frame. Have them look at the ten frame and realize that it is aten and then add on the xs at the bottom by saying 11, 12. 13, 14.

    The Associative Property of Addition:

The way in which three whole numbers are grouped in addition has

    no effect on the sum.

    Adding Three Sums:

Procedure: Give your child a number sentence with the addends

5+5+2. Have them find two addends that are the quickest to add

first and then add on the third to find the sum. This may be

done by looking for the doubles and then adding on the 2 or by

adding 5+2 and then adding on the other 5 whichever is easier for

    your child.

Problem Solving Strategy: Make a Picture

Procedure: Write on a piece of paper: The Pet Shop has 5 black

puppies and 7 spotted puppies. How many puppies are there in

    all?

    1. Have your child read the problem.2.

Have your child circle the numbers 5 and 7.

    3. Have your child underline the words in all and explain thatwhen we see the words in all it means to join two or more

    groups or add.

    4. Then have your child draw the 5 black puppies and the 7spotted puppies.

    5. Have your child write a number sentence to explain thepicture.

    6. Have your child solve and label the number sentence.
