16 Adenosine and adenosine triphosphate have similar activity in SVT In the first double-blind. randomised study to compare adenosine with adenosine triphosphate 39 patients received therapy during 68 episodes of supraventricular tachycardias (SVT). IV adenosine restored sinus rhythm in 20 patients in 25/27 episodes and revealed atrial flutter (by producing AV block) in 8 patients and atrial tachycardia in I patient. Sinus rhythm was restored to a similar degree in patients receiving adenosine triphosphate (17 patients in 22/25 episodes) and atrial arrhythmias were revealed in 6 patients. Effective dosages were 3.8 and 6.6mg for adenosine and adenosine triphosphate. respectively, in patients receiving both compounds. Transient adverse effects occurred with adenosine in 81 % of episodes and with adenosine triphosphate in 94% of episodes. and included chest discomfort, dyspnoea. flushing, headaches and Iightheadedness.
