  • Love is a powerful thing. It can move us to do extraordinary acts of selflessness. Love can be for a partner, a friend, a family member or a dear pet that teaches us unconditional love. It can also be for a neighbor or some-one you see every day at the Senior Center while picking up meals. When asked what love is, some of the Ukiah Senior Center staff shared their thoughts:

“Love is helping other people and making their day brighter,” shared Debbie Zimmerer, Operations Manager.

“Love is encouraging each other and supporting each other’s dreams.” Mary Glanders, Thrift Store Manager.

“Love is honesty, trust, protection and perseverance,” said Julie Dickson, Executive Assistant.

“Love is holding on, and never wanting to let go,” shared Terry Wilson, Transportation Manager.

And for me, love is sharing joy and laughter during the best times and compassion and understanding during the challenging times.

Harvard conducted a great amount of research that has proven people live longer, happier lives if we have strong connections with others. “The lesson that came from tens of thousands of pages of that research was that good relationships keep us happier and healthier,” says Dr. Robert Waldinger, a psychiatrist, and director of the Harvard Study of Adult Development. Research goes on to say that “Social connectedness generates a positive feedback loop of social, emotional and physical well-being,” explains Dr. Emma Seppala of Stanford Medicine. How can we, during this pandemic nurture our relationships? Here are some things we all can do today:

Call a friend. It’s amazing when you get a call from someone you weren’t expecting to hear from. Even if they can’t talk, knowing there’s someone out there thinking of them can make a big difference to their day. Write a letter: Sure, snail mail has become uncommon with all the gadgets we use for communication, but receiving a handwritten letter (or typed if your handwriting is anything like mine) can warm someone’s heart as they see you took the time. Talk with your neighbor over the hedges. When seeing someone on your block, practice social distancing but ask how they are doing. They might be thrilled to get more than just a hello, you may just need to speak a little louder. Send a special message using social media. If you are a fan of Facebook or similar platforms, remember that posting on your page isn’t the same as sending a message. A unique message to someone perhaps with a cute graphic of a cat with hearts floating above its head can truly make someone’s day. Just be sure to add a personal message so they see you were thinking of them specifically (your friend, not the cat).

One of the hardest things we have had to do here at the Ukiah Senior Center is not hold social opportunities knowing how important it is for nurturing relationships. But please know, we are here for you. If you need someone to talk to, please call us Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for our Senior Chat line. Our Outreach team would be more than happy to talk with you.

    LOVE IS IN THE AIR

  • Ask Heather… Advice from our esteemed Outreach Manager, Heather Haydon. Ways to bring more love into your life: Express more appreciation to others… by offering kind words, being present when someone needs support and even a simple “Thank You”.

How important is love for your health and well-being: Spending time with loved ones can reduce stress and anxiety, lower blood pressure and even improve our heart health.

What if someone really needed somebody to talk to when they’re feeling alone: The Senior Center offers a wonderful program called Senior Peer Counseling. It utilizes the skills and life experiences of older adults to provide emotional support to their peers.

You can submit your questions to Heather Call (707) 462-4343 x102 or

TAX PREPARATION UPDATE FOR 2020 RETURNS

Many of you have come to Bartlett Hall in the past to have your tax returns prepared by

volunteers under the sponsorship of the AARP Foundation Tax-Aide program. Last year we

discontinued this service early because of the Covid-19 coronavirus. Although the virus is

still with us, beginning February 1, 2021 we will once again be offering tax preparation

services without person-to-person contact. (In the event a future low contact tax

preparation service model becomes available as an alternative we shall let you know.

This would assist tax clients who do not have scanning or emailing capabilities.)

Beginning January 25, 2021, a volunteer from the Tax-Aide program will be calling and/or

emailing those of you whose tax returns were prepared by us during tax seasons 2018 and

2019 or both to determine your interest in 2020.

For us to prepared your return you must meet the following requirements: 1) All contact

will be via telephone, email or video conference; 2) we did your return in either 2018,

2019 or both tax years; 3) you are able to scan or photograph tax and ID documents,

upload them, and email documents back to our Secure Web Site.

If you meet these criteria and wish us to prepare your 2020 tax return, we will then send

you a packet of documents to complete, and instructions for returning the uploaded

documents along with all of your tax forms including W2, W2G, SSA-1099, 1099-R,

    1099-Misc, 1099-INT, 1099-DIV, 1099-B, 1095-A (or B).

Preparation of tax returns will be scheduled so that they can be completed within 14 days of

    receiving your documents.

Email any questions to: [email protected].

If you cannot email, you can call Vincent Madison at (973) 723-0947.
