What inspired you to start your own stationery range?I’d always loved beautiful design. When I was young I’d collect paper note sets, cards and stickers, anything with a pretty pattern. I studied photography at university and then went on to offer tailored wedding packages to clients, including custom stationery, from the invitations to the wedding album. I realised how difficult it was to find beautiful papers and designs in Australia at the time, so I began to produce my own

ranges of stationery pieces featuring hand drawn illustrations.

What is your design style and what are your influences? My style is feminine, colourful, with a blend of old and new. I love collecting everything vintage as I have an appreciation for fine design and workmanship of the past. As I have an Italian background, I also appreciate European art and culture which inspires my personal design style.

What was the inspiration behind your flagship store Where A Girl Goes?Where A Girl Goes is meant to be a place to celebrate life, love, friendship and creativity. I wanted to offer the entire stationery range in an environment that was inspiring and beautiful, where we can help people bring out the artist within. I love tea and the tradition of high tea. It’s

all about women coming together and sharing, so it seemed like an ideal fit to offer a gourmet café with boutique teas, French-style macarons and cupcakes as well.

How long has your store been open?We have just celebrated the first anniversary of the store opening.

Any plans for more stores across Australia? We would love for our fans around Australia to get a chance to experience everything that Where A Girl Goes offers, from the papercraft workshops to the high teas. So ideally we’d one day like to have a store in each state.

What is your occupation?I’m an interior designer, furniture designer, blogger, a design instructor at two Boston area colleges and a mother of two young children. I guess I wouldn’t call that an occupation but it’s a crazy amount of work!

What do you primarily use your home office for?My office is the “creative” go-to space in my home – it’s where I brainstorm, write my blog and create client drawings and concepts. I basically run my business from my cozy office.

I am very much into the creative process, so I am constantly tweaking

ARMCHAIR:“I actually found the armchair on the side of the road. I sprayed the legs, had it upholstered in a coral velvet and added the large nickel nail head detail.”

DESK:“I ordered a white lacquered dining table from West Elm to use as a desk. I love an oversized work surface – it’s perfect!”

Julie’s top 5 tips

Julie shares with us her top five tips for injecting personality

into your home office.

Get personal. It’s your home – surround yourself with the objects that make you happy! I use stones that my son and I have gathered at the beach as paper weights. In the dead of winter they are a welcome reminder of our time spent together during the summer!

Create an oversized inspiration board. You don’t have to be in a creative field to be inspired or moved. It’s an area within your home that can constantly evolve without a price!

Paint the walls an unexpected color! My walls are a rich chocolate brown. It’s a cozy room to both work and hang out in.

Don’t buy a ‘set’ of office furniture. Mix up the furniture pieces and styles!

Hang art in your space, bare walls are a bore! Art is subjective and can be anything; a framed scarf, a favorite photograph, your child’s artwork, vintage posters... anything goes!

my inspiration board with images, photos and just about anything that catches my eye!

My office also houses all my design books, magazines and fabrics. Oh, and I’m a huge music fan so my iPods and stereo are in here too!

Most prized possession in your home office? The photographs of my children, my design books and out of print magazines.

contemporary& organised

Sydney blogger and interior designer Dana Hughes takes us on a tour of her contemporary home office.

What is your occupation?I have been working as an interior designer for nearly 11 years. At the moment I divide my time between working as a lead designer on high profile projects with an esteemed architecture and design firm, and crafting boutique interiors as a principal of my little design practice.

I also write a design blog called yellowtrace where I share my love for great design and clever people in the areas of interiors, architecture, art, fashion, photography and anything else worth knowing about.

What do you primarily use your home office for?Apart from designing and blogging tasks, my home office also doubles as a dressing room – a large window lets in a lot of natural light which is perfect for applying make-up!

Your favourite feature in your office?Good architectural bones - high ceiling and large window. I also love my built-in bookshelf.

Dana’s top 5 tips

Creating an organised home office can be difficult. Here are Dana’s top five tips to creating the perfect organised space.

Adequate and appropriate storage is paramount. I have two large drawer cabinets where I store all of my sketches, drawings, samples and work in progress.

Magazine holders are an excellent way to keep an endless supply of loose pages in order.

I practice daily “piling” instead of “filing” – I allocate some time at the end of the week (or fortnight if I’m feeling lazy) to put all bits and pieces in their correct place.

Embrace your own style and ways of doing things – that might be accepting that, day-to-day, your home office will probably never look as neat as those that have been painstakingly styled for magazine pages (I sure have!)

Bring in furniture and accessories which express your style and personality. Your office should read more as an extension of you and your home, rather than look as a generic workspace. Ok, so this is not exactly a tip on organising your space, but it’s still very important psychologically (which will make you feel good and indirectly make you more organised… hopefully).

feminine & sophisticated

Digital brand consultant and producer Rebecca Orlov shows Adore Home through her bright and modern home office and gives us her top tips on achieving a sophisticated finish.

What is your occupation?I am a digital brand consultant and producer. My background for over a decade was in the advertising industry, producing TV and digital campaigns. In the last few years, I have been working with brands on their online presence and launched Sweetline Agency (www.sweetlineagency.com), my digital consulting company. I also am a blogger, enjoying posting inspiration on my blog, loving. living. small. (lovinglivingsmall.com), writing for Apartment Therapy and contributing to lifestyle and design blogs and sites.

What do you primarily use your home office for?I do contract and project work with clients and brands via Sweetline and my home office is my main office. It was really important for me to set up a dedicated space that was comfortable and efficient and I love my space. I love the view, clean style and natural light in my office space.

What is your favourite decor item in your home office? My favorite item is my faux crystal sphere chandelier. I spotted it in Chinatown when I was in New York a few months ago and absolutely love

the look of it. Plus it was such a deal - about US$60.

Describe your decorating style.Modern chic with a bit of a vintage touch. I enjoy clean lines and streamlined style with pops of colours.

What inspired the decor of your home office? My magazine collection. I’ve been collecting domino, Elle Décor, Vogue, House Beautiful, New York and Los Angeles magazines for years and I still enjoy flipping through them for inspiration. Although the collection is many years old, I find the content still engaging and relevant.

Biggest extravagance?Overall I was very thoughtful about creating my office and wanted to do it on a budget. I would say my biggest extravagance was my new iMac computer. As for decor, I chose pieces that were affordable, neutral and could double for their use. I’ve turned my office into a dinner table for a party I hosted – the room my office is in is actually the dining room.

Rebecca’s top 5 tips

Rebecca gives Adore Home her top tips to creating a

sophisticated home office.

Clean lines. Adding pieces with straight lines and edges streamlines a space. I love floating shelves.

Modern glam. A little bit of shine goes a long way and can make any space stylish and chic. A gold paperweight or crystal vase can add instant sophistication.

Symmetry. Introducing symmetry in a space creates a curated vibe while providing balance.

Personal style. Including personal photos that you’ve snapped or photos of your friends and family in matching frames adds style.

Natural colour. Adding flowers in your office space is an affordable and easy way to create texture and elegance. I update my flowers in my flat vase weekly and they make me smile.

store profile: pieces to one-off feature cushions using vintage fabrics and trims.

We are constantly changing our stock and are always looking for new and interesting pieces and are often told by our customers that we have things that they do not see anywhere else.

What do you love most about your shop? The fact that there is always something new to inspire us. By displaying our products in “stories” we are able to show our customers how they can make things work in their own homes and, in turn, inspire them. To have our customers bring in photos of what they have done with their purchases is truly rewarding. We have a special board in the shop to display these photos and there are often remarks about what a good idea this is as so often products look great in a shop setting but it is difficult to imagine them in your own home. The board and photos are proof that it does work!

What new products can customers expect to see in store this spring?New products for spring are gorgeous! Outdoor entertaining is more popular than ever and we have a wonderful range of comfy willow furniture and casual cushions to relax in. Spring sees everyone keen to get back in the garden and as we are gardeners ourselves, we are always on the lookout for original and classic garden pieces. Our favourites at the moment are our new compact timber potting bench, perfect for potting up basket loads of spring colour, quirky rain gauges and beautiful cast iron garden urns.

What decor trends do you see being popular this season?Stunning shades of misty mauves and smoky lilacs for decorating accents. Everything from curtains to cushions, tablecloths and napery and even violet upholstered occasional chairs. There is no need to completely redecorate! Just add a scatter cushion in one of these gorgeous dusky hues for instant effect. These colours look great with neutrals inside and out and come to life when featured against the lush greens of the garden.

What is your occupation? After 13 years as a magazine graphic designer, I now call myself something like “founder/author of tabletonic.blogspot.com and owner of online homewares store www.tabletonic.com.au – ‘Global treasures for the modern bohemian’”.

How would you describe your decorating style?Bold, eclectic and ever-changing! With a healthy dose of “organised clutter”.

What’s your favourite room and why?The back end of the house is a beautiful place to hang out and relax. The enormous bifold doors open out onto the backyard and it’s flooded with light and space. All the things you want! It really is the hub of the house.

What are your favourite interior stores?I always love Orson and Blake – owner David Heimann has such a great eye. I’m also a huge fan of Samantha Robinson ceramics, and she’s recently opened the most gorgeous little store in Sydney’s Double Bay. One I’ve yet to make it to is Ici et La in Surry Hills. It looks heaven.

What is your most precious possession? After my husband and children, I’d have to say my ever-expanding jewellery collection. Everything has such a special place in my heart and I love every single pice to bits.

What are your tips for creating a beautiful home?An important tip is not to forget or be afraid to “dress” your walls. A house can be filled with beautiful furniture but until the walls have visual interest, it’s going to look more like a store display than a home. Large prints, vintage mirrors or framed children’s artwork all make perfect focal points in any room.

Who lives here?Summer Thornton and husband Josh Thornton.

Your occupation?Interior designer.

How long have you lived here?Three years.

Describe your decorating style.I’m always asked this question and I have a hard time articulating exactly what it is. I suppose that’s because I don’t want to limit myself to just one style. I’d say my style is always evolving and changing. One week fresh and airy, the next sultry and deep. But if I have to name it, I usually describe my style as a traditional base with a touch of irreverence. Some traditional styled homes are too stodgy, so I like to add in pieces that aren’t so serious and give a bit more fun and a playful attitude. While the word eclectic is incredibly overused, my style is eclectic - mixing new and vintage, modern and formal, and so on. My style is also all about layering and pattern.

What has been the biggest splurge for your home?So far my biggest indulgence is a pair of French bergère chairs. I’ll keep them until I die.

My style is also all about layering and pattern.

adore home

Page 21: Adore Home Oct Nov 2010

40 41

Where do you get your inspiration? My inspiration comes from a variety of different sources. Usually inspiration strikes when you see something new, or even better, something old in a new way. I love to travel and gain inspiration from other cultures and styles - this fall I’m heading to Paris and Venice. Paris is all about architectural beauty, beautiful formal gardens, symmetry and petina. Venice is all about glitz, deco, Murano and opulence. No matter

where I go I’m always absorbing. I also gain a lot of inspiration from fashion as well. In particular I love editorial fashion photography. Vogue in particular always provides great inspiration - Grace Coddington is the creative director at Vogue and I always find the photography that she produces amazing.

Which part of your home do you spend the most amount of time in?Is it weird to say the bedroom? It’s

a haven and I absolutely love a good nap, so I’m in there whenever possible!

What’s your favourite piece of furniture in your house?I love our bedside lamps. We rescued them from a dilapidated worn-down junk store. We put them in a pretty and romantic space with a linen shade and they just provide a little pop of unexpectedness. Their scale is so fun too. They’re one of my most

prized possessions and I think we bought them for about US$150.

If you had the chance to decorate your home again, is there anything you would change?Everything. That’s the curse of being a designer. You always want to do something new, something different. I love this place, but given the chance, I’d do it completely different the next time simply because I’ve

already done it this way.

Decorating tips from Summer

Here are a few challenges that I hope (and suspect) make designs better:

Unexpected and quirky objects make a room real

Perfection is off putting

If your neighbours are doing it... you probably shouldn’t, because it is already overdone

Reference the past, don’t repeat it

Insist on natural fabrics

Colours don’t clash (no matter what your friend, aunt or grandmother said)

Never say never

More IS more

Patina is beautiful

A little bit of ‘weird’ is a good thing

Have fun and don’t stress over it!

Who lives here?My husband, daughter and I live here.

What is your occupation?Interior designer.

Where do you live?Dubai.

What is your decorating style?Eclectic.

What is your most prized piece of furniture? My most prized pieces would be my Chinese lamps that I scored for a deal at a global market. I love their shape and colour and cherry blossom pattern.

Which room do you spend most of your time in?In my daughter’s room.

What was the hardest room to design and why?The living room area because the living room, dining room and kitchen are all open to each other so I had to pick colours and themes that I could carry throughout the entire space.

What’s the cheapest and easiest way to update your home’s look?Update old furniture with a fresh coat of paint or lacquer, reupholster chairs in fun, bold patterns and switch out cushions for new geometric or floral prints.

What are your decorating tips for creating a beautiful home?Use interesting pieces that you find at local stores, mix and match styles, create a balance using highs and lows throughout the room and accessorise with unique antiques or collector items. Let it evolve and have fun with the process.

rafted by designer and artist Matt Martino, Comma is positioned around the natural slope of the land towards Lake

Daylesford and nestled amongst the mature chestnut and apple trees. “I wanted to create the ultimate country retreat - a place that feels homely and familiar while distinctly different in its look and feel,” says Martino.

Comma: Daylesford’s four bedroom house comes complete with an eat-in, country style kitchen, large living and dining area, open fireplace and return verandah looking onto half an acre of land and rocky creek bed.

Located along the circular driveway and separate from the main residence, ‘The Stables’ provides additional private accommodation, ideal for an intimate couple’s retreat or a luxury honeymoon suite

complete with a king-size, four-poster bed and free standing bath.

When selecting a location, The Comma Group looks for somewhere easily accessible with a strong culinary reputation and a focus on local produce and food. “Above all, the location must be aesthetically inspiring, somewhere which has something truly special about it that will resonate with families, couples and children,” Martino says.

great escape

With an additional property in Byron Bay, New South Wales due for completion in early 2011, The Comma Group’s spectacular design set amongst natural surroundings will continue to work together to provide an unrivalled holiday experience.

The Daylesford property is positioned in a picturesque, quiet and private location while still within 800 metres of Lake Daylesford, the Daylesford Botanical Gardens and is two minutes

walk to the main drag, Vincent Street.

Comma: Daylesford sets itself apart from other rental properties as Martino has not compromised on design, finish or furnishings within, delivering the same attention to detail and style that would be expected in one’s own home.

The interiors of both the Residence and Stables are adorned with original artworks, designer pieces and daybeds that give you that feeling of

home.

Martino’s design has drawn inspiration from the interiors of country homes and boutique hotels worldwide. Many of the furnishings for Comma: Daylesford were sourced from local secondhand dealers and flea markets providing a less contrived, but eclectic feel to the interior. “More like the interior of a home that has

evolved over a lifetime,” he says.

great escape

What was your first job and what career path have you taken since?I studied as an architect but never qualified. I have designed houses, interiors and exteriors for about 15 years. I then designed, set up and ran a bar called Lionel, and now do our own design projects and paint, holding a couple of exhibitions a year.

Where do you get your inspiration?Books, magazines, now blogs a lot. I love reading about all types of design and ideas, especially about lifestyles. I like to be inspired ‘between the lines’, i.e food magazines are a great source of colour, styling and design/photography.

How would you describe your decorating style? My style is a genuine mix of old/new, designer and stylist, comfort and function. I love Connecticut style for its understated simplicity and Australian lifestyles (all types, especially when it comes to specific climates). I am less about architecture now and more about design. Architecture is about inventing. Design is a broader term that takes in the way we live. That excites me.

What is your favourite vintage find for Comma: Daylesford? My favourite vintage find is the old wrought iron daybed/ banana lounge I found at Camberwell market. I had a dark grey flannel over-stuffed cushion made for it. Perfect chair – it sits in the stables at the end of the bed tucked

into a dormer window.

Any decorating tips?Buy what you like. Put it strategically in a room, consider its appearance, use and appeal. Be brave. The best interiors are ones that get a reaction. Think about the ‘out there’ dresser – people always love their style, they don’t have to copy it. This is particularly relevant to colour, don’t wimp it.

What’s your next project?Comma2, a place just off the beach in Byron Bay. The house will be a Moroccan-inspired house with Australian beach sensibilities. Think thick rendered walls, exposed rafters, built in daybed/caves, concrete floors, a walled swimming pool and shutters. All two minutes from the front beach in a quiet bush setting... aaahhhhh.

Check out Matt’s website at www.mattmartino.com

STAY A WHILE...Comma: Daylesford is able to accommodate groups of up to 11, as well as more intimate couple retreats. Rates start at $550 per night (Residence) and $250 per night (Stables – weekdays only), with a two-night minimum stay on weekends.

life’s a picnic Eight years ago, Natalie and Simon Thomas came to Sydney from the UK on their honeymoon and fell totally in love with it. Soon after, they moved to Sydney and started their boutique company The Sydney Picnic Co.

www.sydneypicnic.com.au

Natalie and Simon believe the picnic, one of life’s simple pleasures, should be just that. As a couple of English food lovers who, many years ago, became captivated by the beauty of Sydney’s outdoor way of life, they wanted to share their love of al fresco dining and make it easy for people to enjoy a simple, fabulous and spontaneous picnic. That’s why they decided to start The Sydney Picnic Co.

The Sydney Picnic Co. source all their produce from the very best Sydney providores and where possible use organic produce. Natalie says, “Our company ethos is to use seasonal, locally produced food of the best quality. We believe that the ingredients should be the hero and not ‘messed’ around with too much. We put an enormous amount of love into each hamper and we think this really shines through.”

Picnic packages vary in price and menu and can be adjusted according to dietary needs. Simon and Natalie are only too eager to help you plan the perfect picnic.
