Advances in Augmented Reality Applications
Norm McCollough, Electric Power Research Institute

What is this AR stuff anyway?
Augmented Reality is the ability to create and track a correspondence between the real-world space the user inhabits and a virtual space where you can model visual content. When your app displays that content together with a live camera image, the user experiences augmented reality: the illusion that your virtual content is part of the real world.

What hardware is available?•Phones, Tablets, AR Glasses•AR HMDs and Hard-Hats•Device Requirements
• Camera and display• Connectivity to content
• 100M devices and counting

What are the Pros and Cons?
Pros:
Connectivity
Maps, Schematics, Field workers, Help desk,
Sensors for warning
Thermal (IR), Electric Field, Heart Rate, many others
Cons:
Not All Are “Hands Free”
Some are bulky, heavy
Still an emerging technologyRecent announcements by Intel, Atheer, Google, others to delay entry
14
Observations
Many apps available - emerging technology for apps
Connectivity, external sensors, location services are evolving
3D vs 2D still a consideration
Use of a “training” tool is under evaluation
Use in storm damage POC was very favorable
The Edison Electric Institute (EEI) is the association that represents the U.S. investor-owned electric industry. Our members provide electricity for 220 million Americans, operate in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, and directly employ more than 500,000 workers. Safe, reliable, affordable, and clean electricity powers the economy and enhances the lives of all Americans.
The EEI membership also includes dozens of international electric companies as International Members, and hundreds of industry suppliers and related organizations as Associate Members.
Since 1933, EEI has provided public policy leadership, strategic business intelligence, and essential conferences and forums for the energy industry.
