Ben F JefferyBorn in 1986 grew up in Barnet north London.
Always having a keen interest in art ever since his Grandad introduced him to the work of John Varley, the renowned 18thCentury watercolour artist. The Varley’s are related to the Jeffery family. First realising he wanted to be an artist insecondary school Ben and a few classmates used to have bets to see who could draw the best portrait of someone. Hereally enjoyed going to school and showing them his, to see their reaction. He painted a portrait of his dad for a mockGCSE which got admired by the entire art class. His work is fairly diverse ranging from portraits to landscapes in both
pencil and oils. Ben loves working with vivid, bright colours to create a unique and modern style. To see more of Bens work visit…

Fran Thomas Arkwrights Whisky and Wines
1000Lets Talk about Whisky
There was a lot of press coverage when Jim Murray recentlynamed the Yamazaki Sherry Cask 2013 as his number onewhisky in the world in the annually released Whisky Bible butit is not the first time that Japanese whisky has receivedrecognition for its quality. In recent years it has comeincreasingly to the fore – gaining many gold awards incompetitions, and titles such as World's best single malt andbest blended whisky in the World Whisky Awards.
The Japanese have been distilling for many years but it wasn’tuntil the early 1900’s that they turned their attentions towhisky. The founding father of Japanese whisky wasMasataka Taketsuru, who journeyed to Scotland in 1918 tolearn the secrets of whisky making, and whilst studyingchemistry at the University of Glasgow also gained experienceworking in numerous distilleries (including Hazelburn). Whenhe returned home to Japan he took not only his newknowledge but also a Scottish wife called Rita, who was agreat influence in his subsequent life and who never returnedagain to Scotland.
Taketsuru initially put his knowledge to use building the firstJapanese whisky distillery for Suntory but he then moved onto build his own distillery, Yoichi, with the location specificallychosen to be similar in environment to Scotland. 35 years laterhe built a second distillery, Miyagikyo, in another location andformed the Nikka company. Over the years the number ofactive Japanese distilleries has risen to around 9, with Suntoryand Nikka owning two each of these.
Whilst it is true to say that Japan’s whisky productionknowledge came originally from Scotland, and the distilleriesare sometimes located in similar environments, there aremany differences in the Japanese way of working. Forexample, they usually have many different shaped stills withinone distillery allowing them to produce a variety of styles ofwhisky. Additionally, they have stills for producing grainwhisky as well as malt and so can produce blends ‘in house’(blends, I might add, that are complex and delicious – whetherit is the powerful Nikka or the elegant Suntory Hibiki).Interestingly, it is also in Japan and not Scotland that there isstill a distillery (Yoichi) operating the very traditional coal firedstills and this gives the whisky a distinct rich and oily characterthat varies from the soft, floral, fruity and elegant style moregenerally found in Japanese whisky.
Add to this their use of different types of woods formaturation (such as the Japanese Mizunara oak) and anapproach to whisky making that embodies the Japanese idealsof harmony and precision and you can see why the whisky mayhave similarities to Scottish whisky but also has its owndistinct character which is rightly gaining recognition for itsquality and fabulous flavours.

Just saying the word ‘stress’ makes our heart beat a littlefaster and our shoulders stiffen up. We all experience feelingstressed at some point. Whether it is the stress of choosing, change or conflict, even cooking. Stress is ever present, ready to loom and take hold. But what is it that makes somesituations more stressful than others and some peoplebetter able to deal with stress? When we get stressed the body kicks into fight or flightmode. Years ago, this was a useful response when we werebeing chased by a bear because it meant we could becomesuperhuman and run faster to escape. Even now, in smalldoses it can be useful to help us achieve daily challenges likeimportant presentations, financial budgeting or getting yourchildren to accept it’s bedtime.
A build up of stress can cause a range of symptoms.
What a miserable list! Fear not, there are lots of ways ofmanaging stress and tools to stay calm.1. Write down all the things you have to do and categorisethem into important / non important / urgent / non urgent.Do everything that is important and non urgent. Thennothing turns into an important and urgent item, thereforeyou avoid stress. Delete anything from your list that isunimportant and learn to say no to unimportant tasks.2. Breath. It sounds really easy, but notice what happenswhen you get stressed. Your breath becomes shallow andshort. Take time out to focus on breathing deep into yourwhole body, into your feet and into your heart.3. Do something wholesome for yourself every day. Itmight be calling a friend, having a bath, doing some exerciseor having a treatment.
During March, as part of Acupuncture Awareness week,Rachel will be doing a series of stress managementworkshops, demonstrations and talks in Faringdonand the surrounding villages.

Arriving at Sadlers on a cold wet Wednesday evening, I didn’t know what to expect. I hadn’t, in my 7 yearsin Faringdon, been there for an evening meal, though I had heard Paul the chef and his lovely wife Sietske had a good reputation. We were welcomed by a member of staff, a young woman who was very pleasant and immediately made us feel at ease, andasked if we would like to relax on a sofa by the log burner or go straight to our table? What a pleasant choice! A definite, fora romantic date night, chilled out by the fire with a glass of something, then saunter along for a candle lit meal, nice idea!Gents take note..! As I was with my brother we opted to go straight to our table.Sadlers has a beautiful oldie worldly feel to it, with low ceilings, exposed wooden beams, unusual iron bits and piecesadorning the walls, nooks and crannies, with lanterns, paintings, crockery, mirrors, ornaments tactfully displayed. If theconversation dips then there is more than enough to rest your eyes on and take in. With wooden floors, tables and chairs, ithas a very warm, friendly feel to the place, and very quickly filled up with customers that evening. After we were settled down with a very pleasant glass of house red, Sietske brought us a freshly baked garlicflatbread, just enough to nibble on while deciding what to have from the wide choice on theWinter@Sadlers new menu, which I must say is a pleasant surprise on the pocket. One course £13.95. Two courses £18.00. Three courses £22.00My brother opted for the sizzled long cut salami on brioche with Parmesan shavings and oils, beautifullypresented with lots of flavour, the perfect size for a starter. I had pointed roasted red pepper withmascarpone and smoked pancetta, a work of art on the plate, utterly delectable on the pallet and a very finestart to the meal.
Main course then followed with deer goulash on curly kale and rosti potato. The deerwas cooked perfectly covering the kale, with just the right amount of rosti potatoesto suffice, the verdict was excellent! For me, what a pleasant surprise to find an option from my homeland South Africa.A chicken bobotie and lamb bunnychow. Chicken bobotie famously originates in theDurban KwaZulu-Natal province and is a mix of spiced chicken and fruit with a creamy golden topping. In a similar sized dish on the same plate the Lamb Bunnychow which also originates in Durban but fromwithin the Indian community. A Lamb bunnychow is a hollowed out loaf of bread filled withunbelievable curry. Paul’s of course was just the right size a person could eat pleasantly, served in ahollowed out roll, with a side dish of sour cream. Both took me back to Durban's sea front watching theSurfing Festival, the guy’s skills, unbelievable! The taste of Africa in Faringdon! I would reallyrecommend it, and am looking forward to having it again soon. Both of our main courses came servedwith a side dish of salad.
For Dessert, a lovely touch again, the menu written on a mirror and brought over to the table, we had a Gooey ChocolateBrownie, and a Creme Brulee, which brought a super meal to a perfect end!We were offered coffee which we had to decline as nothing more could pass our lips...Sietske and Paul offer a warm quirky, venue to eat and drink in. They are attentive to service and perfect hosts for a superdining evening out!Sadlers also offer Outside Catering for any event, including weddings, as well as hiring out of Sadlers catering equipment. They are open in the evenings for supper Wednesday to Friday. And during the day Tuesday to Saturday 10:00 - 3:00

Yorkshire Puddings
There seems to be a national day for pretty much everythingthese days, which can be really rather irksome. And a lot ofthese seem to revolve around food! Herb week, cheeseweek, carrot day or even chocolate. But for this time of yearI actually think that National Yorkshire Pudding day is prettyfun! Forget the reasoning behind all of these weird andwonderful dates and just take it for what it is. Although ifyou are like myself, you maybe rather awful at makingYorkshires. But perhaps a little practice could do the trick! And there is rather more you can do with this delicious bakedbatter than just serve it with roast beef. Although my mouthis fair watering just talking about it!
Serve with any roast. Don't gasp, it works! Or use a largeindividual pudding as a receptacle to serve ladles ofsteaming stew, be it chicken or beef. Use a giant yorkie as acase for quiche style fillings. Just make your Yorkshire, bakeand then fill with all of the ingredients for your favouritesavoury tart. Vegetables and meat or fish and a savourycustard. Bake again carefully until set. Or use one as a bowlfor ice-cream with a rich warming chocolate sauce.
Thinking along the lines of a toad in the hole, its lovely to usefruit in a batter pudding like this. In France there is a dishcalled clafoutis which is often filled with cherries. Althoughmany fruits will work perfectly.
For a great store cupboard pudding, which will be a goodpre-made dish also. Here we have apple and cinnamonYorkshire with a silky custard.
Make a batter. Whisk together 200g plain flour, 25g brownsugar, 1tsp cinnamon and 3 eggs then 300ml milk. Whiskuntil smooth. Let the batter stand for a while whilst you getthe remaining ingredients together. Use some lovely redskinned eating apples. Cut in to wedges and place 3-4 piecesin to the holes of a muffin tin. Pour over a tsp of oil, sunflower or ground nut, then place in a hot oven and roastuntil starting to soften. Carefully pour over the batter andget it to the oven quickly to cook for another 20 minutes.Serve straight from the oven with a warm creamy custard.Delicious! Try it with a pear or even a pineapple, to ring thechanges. COME HOME TO A JOB WELL DONE

Looking Beyond Obscurity with Tannat…Have you ever heard of Tannat?I had the great fortune of coming up close and personal withTannat on my recent visit to the Barossa Valley wine regionin South Australia. It was quite unexpected, as I had readabout this black grape variety during my studies and wasaware that it was produced commercially in the SouthAmericas. It appears that globalisation has infiltrated thewine industry too.The Barossa Tannat was from the small producer, Massena.Interestingly, these winemakers like to dabble with your
‘not-the-run-of-the-mill’ grape varieties found in Australia, such as primitivo, mataro and durif. This wine left a lastingimpression; bold dark rich blackberry fruit with juicy ripe richtannins.Upon my return to the UK, I have searched a few High Streetand online retailers in search of Tannat, however it appearsthat this grape variety is somewhat a well-kept secret!Further research has revealed that its origins lie in theBasque country, on the border between France and Spain. Here, in the shadow of the Pyrenees Mountains, the terrainis rough and rugged, so it is only fitting that Tannat shouldcreate wines which are equally deep, dark, dry and rustic.Although Tannat is still used among the foothills here, themost famous Tannat wine is made a little way to the north,in Madiran.Tannat’s second home is Uruguay, where it was also knownas ‘Harriague’ after the Frenchman who brought cuttingsfrom the Basque region. These wines are influenced by theclimate’ making the tannins more rounded. Commercialpractice sees it often blended with softer grape varietiessuch as merlot or pinot noir.Michel Torino Don David Tannat 2012Cafayate, Argentina£9.49Slightly smoky and brambly, there’s great intensity to thegenerous sour cherry and blackcurrant aromas, with vanillaspice and tobacco undertones. A soft, succulent palateshows juicy balsamic notes, dark fruit, strawberries, blueberries, prunes and pepper spice. Very concentratedand modern, this is opulent with mouth filling roundedtannins. A perfect companion to venison or barbecued rib-eye steak! Available from Den Boer Wines.

Hello and welcome to another ramble through all matters that may be of equal concern to you, dear Reader. With the topic of dementia never being far away, the chances of someone we know being actually affected by it, as carer, friendor loved one, is increasing. It is a tribute to people like Sir Terry Pratchett, openly dealing with his “embuggerance”, and to theinterviewees in the programme on Radio 4 one evening late last year, that the profile of this condition is more open and in thepublic domain. I’ve decided to become a ”Dementia Friend”, with an eye on becoming a Dementia Champion. These are the
initiatives of the Alzheimer’s Society. May I just quote two pieces from another initiative of theSociety, “The Little Book of Friendship”: “I don’t in many ways think of myself as being ill. Mostof the things I could do, I can still do, just not in the same way” (Rusty, living with Alzheimer’s);also, “LISTEN – being a good listener is important to any friendship. But taking the time to listenin a way that reassures your friend with dementia is one of the best ways to help. Keeping eyecontact, not interrupting and being patient will help your friend feel comfortable.” A friend withdementia can easily be a client and we are here at the service of clients for their pets, in a waythat helps each other to give the best care for their four-legged friend and member of the family. It is my opinion that as a professional, I should be in a position to give this extra supportwhenever needed, whenever I can recognise the need to.Also in clients’ thoughts, especially those of you who travel with their pets on a PETS passport, will be the holiday plans for later in the year. New changes to the passports have already taken
effect; they are designed to strengthen enforcement across the EU, improve compliance and improve the security and trace abilityof the actual passport itself. The minimum age for a Rabies vaccination is now 12 weeks. Two points to make here only – (1) it iseven more necessary to make sure that your pet is fully compliant with the EU TravelScheme rules BEFORE you leave the UK, and (2), if you already have a passport for yourpet, YOU DO NOT NEED to get a new one, unless all the treatment spaces are filled, asALL EXISTING passports will remain VALID for the lifetime of your pet.Thinking of Rabies and my support to the charity, Mission Rabies, great work has beendone by all the hundreds of volunteers out there in India, where, with publishedstatistics stating that one person is bitten by a dog EVERY 2 seconds, the cost of theprophylactic treatments are borne by those people who can least afford to pay. Onlyone person in a group of affected people may be able to afford the cost of the extraimmunoglobulin dose. WHO estimates that the cost of a full post-bite courserepresents, on average wages, 31 working days – in Africa it rises to 51 days. Comparethis to the all-in-all cost of giving a healthy dog a rabies vaccination in India of just under£1; this is a magnificent act of animal welfare that directly extends to human welfare. A massive neutering programme is alreadyin hand, reducing stray dog numbers, reducing the pressure on vaccination costs and helping the charity achieve the goal ofvaccinating 70% of all dogs in any given area, year on year, for 3 years – and to then eliminate the rabies virus from that area andsurrounding areas.I’m delighted that one of our former work-experience students, now at Bristol Vet School, will be joining Mission Rabies next year,as a volunteer.
The PDSA Animal Welfare Report was published in December last year andthere’s a lot of animal welfare education to be done over here in the UK, letalone the Mission Rabies volunteers talking to the 70,000 schoolchildren inGoa, India, about how to look after themselves better, regarding pets, streetdogs and rabid cows. The Report is based on 1069 pet owner respondents and572 veterinary professionals. The PDSA introduced the report by saying that the findings “have highlightedthat the welfare needs of millions of UK pets are still being neglected, resultingin a nation of ill, lonely, aggressive, stressed and obese pets.” The Reportestimates that there are about 1.5 million dogs that are under-socialised aspuppies, with all the potential problems that follow-on. In 2016, the micro-chipping of ALL DOGS is compulsory, but only 2/3rds of dog owners are aware
of this. Also, too many pet owners had no real idea of the true cost of home and veterinary welfare needs over that pet’s lifetime. Many practices like us are already helping by offering free micro-chipping for one year to April THIS year, thanks to the generosityof each practice and in particular that of The Dog’s Trust, who have sponsored the campaign. Many practices too are also offeringpet health plans, which have been carefully worked out to reflect the truecost of veterinary care for each size of pet, but which have simple directdebit payments arranged.Imagine the costs in looking after the rescue, fostering, veterinarytreatment including surgery, forest patrols with vehicles and on foot, population education, in order to rehabilitate those orphaned, trapped, maimed, very rare Sumatran tigers in Indonesia and with the help of anassociated zoo in Australia, as seen in a recent TV programme. So, we’ve whizzed around the World a bit this month! I hope that some ofwhat I’ve written will be of real interest to you, maybe very relevant in factto some; I look forward to meeting up again next month.

Tips to Improve Your Life
Feeling energetic is a key to happiness and to self-esteem, sotake steps to keep your energy high. How you think ofyourself greatly affects how successful you can be.
What can I start doing today to make my life happier andmore fulfilling?1. Put yourself higher up the importance list
You need to be in the best shape both physically andemotionally to deal with all the things life throws at you. Ifyou do this you are in a better position to help the otherpeople that are important in your life such as family andclose friends. Only once you have realised the importance of
‘self’ can you then go forward to improve all other things inyour life.
2. Focus on one thing at a time and give it your full attentionWhen it comes to health and fitness see it as a priority. If youare healthy and if you feel great about your physique you arebetter placed to help others either at home or in theworkplace or your social group to improve their lives too.Whatever you do to prioritise your health and fitness put it inthe diary as an unmovable appointment so that everythingelse has to be organised around it. See the value of yourpersonal training session, massage or gym session, andenjoy what’s happening, while it’s happening.
3. Know the difference between what is important andwhat is urgentMost of us spend too much time on urgent things and notenough time on important things. Think about thedifference between what is important and what is urgentthen review your ‘to do’ list and do what is important firsteven if it seems like everything is important - focus!
4. Go with your ‘gut feeling’By all means listen to other people’s advice but go with whatfeels right for you and what fits with your priorities. Do notallow others to confuse you. Concentrate your efforts onpeople that have your best interests at heart. The outcomewill be a happier YOU.
5. Avoid feeling you need to do it all by yourselfLearn about how to improve your health and wellbeing byusing professional advice from those who know how to help.Sometimes you can’t do it all alone and it is actually ok to askfor help, support and motivation. Not everything can beachieved by Googling!
6. What goes around comes aroundThink positive thoughts and positive things will happen.Listen to others and they will listen to you.
7. Focus on what you have to gain not what you have to lose
8. Be FlexibleWhen things don’t go as planned. Take a step back andbreathe! Look back at what you are trying to achieve and aimto keep on the right path for you – good things are ahead foryou! It is easy to give other people advice to improve their livesbut sometimes you need to improve your life too. Once thatis achieved helping others can become more effective.

So you think you could never be arunner? Think again!!If the idea of ‘a runner’ conjures up images of ultra-fit, super-humans in the pursuit of another ‘PB’, think again! We runfor fitness, enjoyment, friendship, and (let’s be honest) thatslice of cake! Over the last 2 years we’ve LOVED seeingapprehensive beginners transform into confident runners;let’s hear from them:Lisa Holmes: ‘I was very unfit, nervous and had never run in mylife. But with Far Runners’ help and support I did a HalfMarathon in 5 months! I couldn't have achieved any of itwithout the Far Runners.’Rachel Greenaway: ‘I hadn't run for years… had 2 babies in 2years and thought I would never get fit again.… I joined FarRunners as a beginner ... They were very welcoming, motivating & supportive! Less than a year on and I've neverbeen fitter, love running and made lots of lovely friends. Thebest thing I ever did!’ and twin Lisa Lewis: ‘...I’m so glad that Istarted [running] again and with the help of Far Runners... Iwas nervous about running with a group but I was made verywelcome.... we all motivate each other. Far Runners is a greatfriendly group xx’Penny Halsall: I cannot emphasize enough the benefits ofjoining a group... I had never run before, within a couple ofmonths I was able to achieve distances I never thoughtimaginable, I was so proud of myself… I would not have hadthe confidence… to achieve my running goals without them. Ihave made wonderful friends... Best thing I did in 2014 was tojoin the Far Runners.’Samantha Bailey: ‘I had just had my second son and hadn'tdone any form of exercise for a long time.... within 3 monthsof joining I ran my first 10k and could only have done it with allthe support and encouragement from Far Runners!.....’Lucy Case: ‘I wasn’t a runner, I didn’t enjoy running and, quitefrankly, a few years ago I would have been amazed at myselfrunning now... seeing it as a way of getting fit, out in the freshair, and to meet people, I decided to (tentatively) give it a go.It’s been great to find a club where people are friendly and canchat… whilst exploring the countryside. The Saturday grouphas been a relaxed and very friendly introduction to running...it doesn’t feel overwhelming... now I’ll happily run six miles!’Fancy joining us? Daughter - By Jane Smelt
I’ve read some good family dramas with a mystery twist recently and this one was an excellent andaddictive example of why I love these sort of stories when they are done well and in my opinion thiswas done very well.
Jenny is a successful family doctor, the mother of three great teenagers, married to a celebratedneurosurgeon.
When Naomi her daughter fails to return from her school play, her family is thrust into the limelight of a nationwide searchand emotional turmoil that knows no bounds.
As the story evolves between the days leading up to Naomi going missing, the immediate aftermath, then a year later, we geta realistic and emotive snapshot of how even in the closest of families, there are secrets kept hidden.
I thought this was marvellously constructed with Ms Shemilt walking the line between eliciting an emotional response andkeeping the story flowing along – as the personalities of the players begins to solidify and take shape this is one of thosecharacter driven novels that make you feel as if you know the people. You feel the sorrow and the anguish, the hope and thefear and all the emotions in between as Jenny searches desperately for the truth whilst trying to help her other children cometo terms with their loss and keeping her own head, as the family begins to fracture this is compelling stuff.
The mystery element – what happened to Naomi and why – is also extremely well drawn. By using the time slip and thecharacter development to tell the tale rather than relying on sudden twists and turns, the reader is kept connected to thestory the whole of the way through, immersed into the events and feelings of each moment in time.
Once I was halfway through I barely put it down until the ending which was poignant and perfect. A tale that will stay withme for a while.Overall a brilliant and evocative story which comes highly recommended by me.

You may mistakenly think you have to speak good French tobe part of the Faringdon Twinning Association. It cancertainly help, and for some it gives an opportunity toimprove their grasp of the language from schooldays, but infact some of our most regular members manage little morethan ‘Bonjour’, ‘Merci’ and ‘Au revoir’!This year is the 25th Anniversary of twinning betweenFaringdon and le Mele, a small town in Normandy, just 75miles from the Channel port of Caen. To celebrate, there arespecial events in both towns.May 14-17th sees 50 or so French coming here, along with afew Czechs and Germans, who also twin with le Mele. Therewill be a celebratory lunch in the Corn Exchange on Saturday16th May, and a party in the evening in the Junior School. With so many expected we would love to hear from you ifyou think you could host (see later). The return visit is 28-31 August (the Bank Holiday weekend),timed in particular so that families can take part. Ask anyonewho has been on one of these trips and they will describethe fantastic time they have had.Something for everyone?Social – you’re bound to meet and get to know like-mindedFaringdonians at these events, as well as some lovely Frenchpeople, who are unbelievably hospitable.Tourists – there is always a day-trip during the visit to France,to somewhere historical or interesting, for instance in recentyears, we have been to Monet’s garden and Leonardo daVinci’s house with its working models of his inventions.Wine-drinkers – if you enjoy a glass or two, you will be in fora treat, as the French probably do keep the best in France, and they are very generous with it . . .and also the calvados!Cyclists – this year Farcycles is organising a group cycle toand from le Mele to coincide with the twinning weekendover the August Bank Holiday. Some are cycling one-wayand taking the coach for the other leg – it means two days ofcycling about 75 miles per day.Families – it’s a great family experience giving children anappreciation of another culture and some of the languagerubs off. We try to match families according to the ages ofthe children, with some great friendships resulting.Teenagers – each July, just as school is finishing, a youthtwinning trip for 12-15 year-olds goes to le Mele with youngadult leaders for about 5 days. It’s always fantastic fun andsome improvement in French language is a spin-off. Thisyear the French will visit Faringdon from July 14-20, andFaringdon children return with them on the 20 July until 25July.Work experience – there is the opportunity to do a verydifferent type of work experience in le Mele, that is boundto look good on the CV. Some French language is helpful. So, are you inspired to give it a go? If you think you can hostin May; or if you have a 12-15 year old who would like to go toFrance in July; or if you want to go to le Mele as an individual,a couple or family in August . . . . then [email protected] or call David Williamson on01367 240033 for more information.
