Advisement During this evening……

Valuable information on high school diploma requirements, career information and six-year plan are presented.

Pre-registration courses are reviewed and finalized through expert advice.

The folder you receive should be kept and referred to not only for the remainder of this school year, but also for the remainder of high school. There will be another opportunity for a plan to be completed in the fall semester of the junior year with a three-year plan that will extend two years beyond high school.

Where Am I Going ?....Job Search After students know a little about themselves, it is time to explore some of the careers/jobs that match the student’s personality type.

These are helpful links to learn about different jobs. Even when the suggestions which seem to match results are not of interest; it still is important to check them out anyway. Ask what there is about the job that does or doesn’t fit. It’s like putting a puzzle together; it takes thought and perseverance.

ADVISEMENT AND REGISTRATON

For Next Year and As the Six-year Plan is Completed and is Finalized this evening:

Rigorous/relevant courses Honors classes add 5 points for students who pass, for

local purposes only. AP classes add 10 points for students who pass. AP classes CAN earn college credit, depending on how

well the student does on the AP exam at the end of the course work.

What is a High School Diploma?

What is a Core Course?A course in the areas of English, mathematics, science, social studies, or world language which the state board of education identifies as a core course.

What is an Elective Course? A selected course required to complete a program of study

and fulfill units for the high school diploma.

What is a Required Course?A designated course (core or elective) required to fulfill units for the diploma.

A Carnegie Unit?1 unit of credit for each full year course passed (½ credit for a semester course)

What is the High School Grading Period?1 semester

Credit may be awarded at the end of the semester for .5 credit or upon the completion of a full credit 1.0 credit may be awarded at the end of a semester for high school students who successfully complete Hybrid block courses.

What is the Grading Scale? 90-100 = A

80-89 = B70-79 = C 00-69 = F

Hybrid Schedule

As we review the high school diploma plans, we need to focus on a “Hybrid Schedule” for next year for your student.

Flexible schedule to meet individual needs of your student. Some courses are taught for 50 minutes and earn ½

credit at the end of each semester Some courses are taught for 100 minutes with one

credit being earned at the end of either the fall or spring semester

Now, How will registration FOR NEXT YEAR and the six-year plan

work? By reviewing the first semester of 9th

grade transcript along with the career portfolio information, the 6-year plan information was recorded by each student during classroom guidance.

The finalized copy of this form will be completed during 9th Grade Arena Advisement this evening.

The course request list will be reviewed and the advisement plan will be signed today by the student’s parent or guardian. The course request list is utilized as well as any updated documentation that will finalize the student’s Hybrid Schedule for next year.

There are tests required in high school, just different tests than students took in middle school.

Georgia High School Graduation Tests (GHSGT) Taken as a junior after 10 units earned and

two English and two mathematics courses have been passed.

SAT CompanionThe GAcollege411 SAT Companion features easy-to-use tutorials, interactive practice sessions, techniques and strategies, and more, to strengthen academic skills in preparation for the SAT. The test-prep courses automatically adapt to the student’s skill level, give immediate feedback to answers, and offer helpful hints, tips, and explanations for the types of questions and subjects found on the exam. The SAT Companion provides overview information about the different sections of the SAT test along with a list of frequently asked questions about the SAT test.

Official SAT Online CourseThe Governor's Office and the Georgia Department of Education are providing public high school students enrolled in grades 9 through 12 free access to the Official SAT Online Course administered by the College Board. This course offers interactive instruction organized into 18 lessons, 6 official practice tests and hundreds of practice questions with answers and explanations, automated essay scoring and personalized score reports. Any student enrolled in a public high school in grades 9-12 will have access to this service. To gain access, obtain the high school code from the high school counselors. Once a student has the high school code, he/she sets up a user name and password.

REMEMBER, the SAT or ACT are the two tests required for admission to a college or university.

ACCEL Program for 11th and/or 12th Grade

As planning is completed for the junior or senior year on the six-year plan, the ACCEL Program is an opportunity for some students to consider.

Purpose of the ACCEL Program Provide Georgia high school students with the opportunity to earn college

degree-level credit hours, as they simultaneously are enrolled in high school and college and also meet their high school graduation requirements.

The ACCEL Program is attractive to ambitious students who want to get ahead start on college.

Interested students need to seek the advice of their professional school counselor during the fall semester of the 10th grade year.

(Please note: College courses will not receive honors or Advanced Placement weight for the calculation of the GPA).

Technical colleges do also participate in dual enrollment programs.

For our Freshmen thinking about the sophomore year…Dennis Whatley, author of many leadership books, states,

"Winners can tell you where they are going, what they plan to do

along the way, and who will be sharing the adventure with them." Transcript history is really important and four credits

must be earned to be considered a sophomore. There needs to be a focus on current classes and doing

well in each class. Remember: Most of your classes are full-year courses

with the grade earned at the end of first semester and the end of second semester.

All grades count toward the overall GPA and earning credits for graduation! Transcript history started being built at the end of first semester.

PROBE FAIR, Fall 2009 The Probe Fair is an excellent time to visit

with college, university, technical college and military representatives.
