WELCOMEBACK!

January 2012! Where did 2011 go, and better get...where is this school year going? I don't know about you, but the time seems to be ying at the speed of light, or slightly faster. I know that I just nished mid-term grades, and couldn't believe that it was the middle of the school year already. That must mean that I'm having a great time in the classroom with my students. That is absolutely the truth!

I hope you have taken the time to reect on all the great things you accomplished both personally and professionally in 2011, as well as have set some goals for your-self and your classroom for 2012. (Notice I didn't call them resolutions!) One goal you should denitely put on your list is to present at this year's joint Iowa/Nebraska conference in October! I hope you have also begun to prepare student work to have a part of the Youth Art Month adjudication at the Winter Board meeting on January 25. See information in the newsletter about both of these opportunities.

Wishing you a happy, prosperous, and artful new year!

BIOGRAPHY,of a board member.

This month’s first board member biography is of Alison Owens, who works at Clarke Middle and High School for Clarke Schools. She has also taught previously at Newton

Public Schools but has been present at Clarke for five years. Alison recieved her BA in Art, French, and Education Program. She also has her Master of Science in Education from

Drake University.

Alison is very close with her family and loves being with friends. She also enjoys reading, running, ceramics, and crafts. Alison choses Iowa because she appreciates how arts are

strongly supported in communities. It also helps that she went to college in Iowa. One of the reason she loves teaching art is because every student can find a place to excel.

Alison is our Membership Chair; she updates lists, contacts members when it’s time to renew and constantly helps answer any questions someone might have about current or

future membership. As membership chair, Alison would love to see all art educators in the state become involved in an art specific professional community like AEI. She thinks it is important to be aware of the challenges facing and opportunities available in our profes-

sion.

Alison has found AEI to be a great and support ive community of fellow art teachers with whom to collaborate. As she states, “[The] people are warm and welcoming and there are

plenty of opportunities to become involved!”

Alison notes that her favorite part of the year is Living History Farms cross country race - “what could be better than dressing up in costumes, running through creeks and cornfields,

followed by hot cider and donuts??” she exclaims!
