NARRATOR

One day, Grasshopper was out for his usual hop, skip and jump across the grass when he met industrious Ant who was dragging a big hunk of wheat up the side of his anthill.

GRASSHOPPER

Hey there Ant, beautiful day, isn’t it? It just makes me want to jump and sing and play in the rays!

(sings) Every dayIs a day to play.Life is funWhen you jump and run.

(sings again trying to get the Ant to dance with him)

ANT(annoyed with Grasshopper)

I have to do my work first! After carrying food supplies all day, I’m too tired to play!

GRASSHOPPER

Oh c’mon, grumpy, lighten up! Why are you working so hard on such a beautiful day? Remember the saying, “All work and no no play makes Jack a dull boy!”

Sing with me! Hop with me!

Good evening, this is Annie Francis reporting to you from

Farmer Brown’s cold, snow-covered wheat field.

We have a very sad story to report this evening. It seems that a poor homeless

grasshopper has been found dead in a snowbank. He obviously had no food put

aside for the winter months and did not have a burrow prepared to keep him warm.

I knocked on the door of a neighbour to see if anyone knew about the grasshopper.

The ant who answered the door of his cosy home told me that the last time he saw

the grasshopper, he was singing and dancing instead of gathering food and

preparing a warm home for winter.

The Report cont.

_______ I saw that the ant’s home was warm and full of wheat, so I asked him

how he learned to work hard to be ready for the chilly winter months.

He told me that his whole family always worked hard and ants just

grow up knowing how to work first and play later.

It is unfortunate that the grasshopper didn’t seem to learn this

lesson. Now it’s too late.

In ActionTeacher Notes

This series of activities reinforces the vocabulary of the fable characters (nouns) and their actions (verbs). After all of the activities have been completed, the students should be familiar enough with the phrases to play the game Quick Draw.

Activity 1 - Complete the sentenceThis activity introduces the phrases used in the review. Students can look back in the text of the fables they have read to complete the sentences correctly. It is not necessary for them to have read all the fables in order to do the activity. With a dictionary and by process of elimination, students should be able to determine the correct answers.

Activity 2 - Who can do that ?Students complete a chart by filling in the characters who can perform the actions in each box. The students should be encouraged to fill as many correct answers as possible in each box. Some may be creative in deciding whether a particular character is able to fit the action in the box, but must be able to explain their reasoning.

Activity 3 - Word SearchAll of the phrases are hidden in the word search puzzle. A recording page is provided for checking off the phrases as they are found. Students should write each phrase and complete the sentence for written practice with the vocabulary.

Activity 4 - Quick DrawOnce the students are familiar with the phrases, they should be able to enjoy the challenge of playing this drawing game. It can be played with the full class or in smaller groups of 4 to 8 students.
