Welcome to EduWeek 2014

Now entering its 8th year Education Week returns as SABC Education African EduWeek 2014.

It is with great pleasure that I introduce and welcome you to the African EduWeek 2014 conference and exhibition. This year’s conference theme is “Empowering teachers to deliver quality education everywhere”, a topic firmly tied into our vision of creating the most inclusive and all-encompassing education event in Africa.

The complexities of the education systems in Africa are vast and constantly changing. There is no doubt that evolution is taking place, particularly with the accessibility of classroom technology, and the barriers to a good education are disappearing.

We have made a number of key changes for EduWeek 2014 by remodelling the conference structure and pricing. The conference classrooms have been housed within the exhibition, putting our delegates in the heart of the action at EduWeek. Plus, for the first time visitors will be able to attend individual conference sessions for just R495.

The continued development of education is intrinsically linked to the development of this continent. I am proud that EduWeek has grown into the premier event of its kind in Africa, and I truly believe it can serve as a platform for the sustained development of the education sector in Africa for years to come.

I look forward to seeing you there.

Kind regards

Tanya JackmanEvent Manager

Pre-conference workshop09:00 Enhance your student’s learning through the use of mobile devices in the classroom practical Maggie Verster, Senior Consultant, ICT4Champions, South Africa

During this workshop participants will experience how to practically implement learner centred teaching strategies in their classrooms, using mobile devices. Many schools are currently providing learners and teachers with tablet devices in the hope that it will change teaching and learning, but sadly this is no guarantee for success. This workshop will draw from our experiences in a large scale mobile device implementation as we model some of the ICT4RED teacher professional development course elements in a hands-on practical fun environment. We will investigate how to embed mobile devices within:

• Change management• Lesson gamification• Learner centered teaching strategies

Please bring all your mobile devices along and come and play with us! You will leave with a toolkit of lesson plans, strategies, apps and ideas to change your classroom into a 21st century, mobile enabled innovation hub!

Early booking advised as workshop places are limited to 30 seats

12:30 A light lunch is provided for delegates attending the workshops

“If we want all the children of South Africa to have access to quality education, it implies that they should have access to technology to enable this engagement.”

What Intel products and services are you most excited about at the moment?

We are definitely excited about the Intel reference design 10” tablet, because it comes with added features such as a clip-on magnification lens and plug-in thermal probe that enables students to do scientific experiments. This device is also the most rugged tablet available in the market today, when you are looking at tablets that have been purpose built as an educational tool.

Another equally exciting development that may turn out to be our most exciting product this year is the 2-in-1 Windows-based device, which is a fully featured tablet for when you need to consume multimedia and turns into a laptop for when you need to create content. This device also comes with lots of value added software.

“Pearson wants to showcase the power of technology in the classroom environment and how teaching has evolved in the digital space”

What is your vision for the education sector?

I have a vision of a South Africa where all people have access to quality learning, where young people are fully equipped for a world of work and where each school leaving group decreases the poverty and unemployment statistics.

I have a vision of schools with strong leadership, high speed uncapped internet, quality content and cloud based, rich repository of digital materials with immediate data analytics.

I have a vision of a school system that has the capacity to track and tweak the learning paths that will lead to successful education outcomes.

Center for Education Innovations South Africa is one of five global hubs that include: Nigeria, India, Pakistan and East Africa. CEI promotes programmes, policies, and practices that increase access to quality, affordable, and equitable education for the developing world.

The vision is for education systems around the world to capitalise on innovation so as to increase access to quality education, especially for the poorest and most vulnerable. The development of CEI was based on the understanding that there is an incredible amount of innovation and activity in education, but it is not systematically documented and there is little evidence about the most effective ways to improve access to quality education for the poor. CEI was developed in order to address this gap.

At African EduWeek CEI South Africa will be hosting a series of seminars and discussions that include examples of innovative programmes in education, research from neighbouring states and new models for financing education interventions.
