Welcome

OMAR BEN YEDDERPublisher, IC Publications

where 150 decision-makers from politics, business and civil society from Europe and North America colluded to set out policy and agree on a common strategy to fulfil and further their interests. The world has changed, the centres of power may be slowly shifting but the concept still remains an interesting one. More importantly, the story called into question our strategic decision making as Africans and the way we agreed and executed on common policy. Having had and achieved a common goal of complete African independence, the article came to question how free and united we in Africa really were. It concluded that unless our leaders, not only in politics but in business and civil society, worked together to define this strategy we would remain sidelined, onlooking spectators, passengers being taken for a ride. With my job, I happen to go to many different conferences all on Africa, meeting some highly capable people along the way. And I still hear some of the critiques voiced in that article. As well as a frustration at the pace of change. Regional integration, for example, which can unlock so much potential, is not realistically happening; we all understand its benefits, but why is it not moving as rapidly as it should? Do we understand the political

or historical context holding it back? What about Africa’s strategy to ensure we know and get what we want from China’s rise? The European Partnership Agreements, and the lack of a common African position, are another clear example of a dysfunctional strategy and execution process. I have heard in my conversations that Africa had more international influence as part of the non-aligned movement than it does today. These are some of the reasons behind organising our African Leadership Forum. Our aim is to create a community which will help drive and shape the African agenda, by dissecting our problems intellectually, sharing ideas and thoughts, We also want to create a community where we increasingly work and collaborate together in taking these ideas forward.I hope our inaugural forum will set the scene for a rich exchange of ideas and become a breeding ground for strategies and plans to serve Africa’s interests.Lastly, and by no means least, I must express my deepest gratitude to the generosity of all our sponsors without whom today would not have been possible. We appreciate your support in enabling such a platform. And a thank you to you all for taking the time out of your busy schedules to be here. I wish you all a productive and enjoyable day.

When I joined the group, ten years ago now, one of the first cover stories I read in our flagship title New

African was about secret societies and gatherings where the ‘world’s decisions’ were taken. One of the gatherings quoted in this report was the Bilderberg meetings, an annual conference founded in 1954 with the aim of fostering dialogue between Europe and North America. Over the years, some have gone as far to say the Bilderberg meetings were where the global agenda was being set,

Concept

contemporary African societies are subject to new global trends and technological shifts – economic, cultural and political – which is in

part the result of Africa becoming an important protagonist within a globalised world. Whilst this is encouraging, Africa’s growing interdependence and interaction within this global environment also calls for a new type of African leader, agile, forward thinking, proactive and strategic, who is capable of identifying and seizing the opportunities and overcoming the challenges presented by this new era. Africa’s unprecedented confidence in its own capabilities must be effectively promoted both within and outside the continent in order to replace Africa’s old image with a fresh reality, one that reflects the current phase of political stability, booming economies, and a favourable investment climate. The African ‘re-branding’ message, however, must reflect a genuine change in attitudes, mindsets and policies. The central question remains leadership. Are African leaders tackling globalisation effectively? How are they engaging with political, economic and financial global players? How are they

conveying a ‘re-branded’ image of the continent when dealing with the global centres of power? How do they build on Africa’s strengths and the benefits of globalisation to ensure a sustainable improvement in the lives of Africans? The African Leadership Forum will address these questions bringing together African leaders, development experts, economists, political commentators, representatives from think-tanks and financial institutions, as well as private sector and civil society leaders. By discussing economic growth, foreign direct investment, official development assistance and development issues, the debate will seek to identify and promote a new shared vision for Africa. It will also bring together top African and global political, business, media, arts, sports and development leaders in a unique, collaborative environment to freely exchange their ideas on leadership, particularly within an African context.

Cradle of mankind, Africa remains for many an earth of sufferings and uneven development. For too numerous Africans, the conflict and its dramatic consequences are regrettably a part of their life. Nevertheless, crises, wars are not a fate!History is written quickly, especially when people take own-ership. Peace will become a reality when all the forces of the continent will strive together to attain it. Africa must use the powerful creative energy of its people pro-actively in order to accelerate the development of a peace culture and to reach an economic and social development shared by all.Peace is not only the opposite of war. Peace cannot be effec-tive without a transformation of attitudes, values, behaviours both at the individual and collective levels. My ambition is to rally every single day more intelligence so that all Africans are involved in my task, so that they themselves might be-come Ambassadors of Peace and so that we might all carry the flame across the continent.Action is to be simultaneously led to the individual, national and international levels. To give birth to this collective fight, to mark the attachment in a culture of the peace based on the universal values namely respect of life, freedom, justice, solidarity, tolerance, human rights and equality between men and women, all the people of goodwill must be gath-ered. And all the forms of actions must be combined. This is the reason why we decided to design a Pin’s for Peace.Conjugating the symbols of peace that are the dove and the olive branch, the Pin’s for Peace highlights the central role of men and women in the search for peace by using the symbolism of two open hands which get ready to join to lead together a common fight. The Pin’s for Peace is the symbol of the commitment to work together, each of us at their own level, in their personal or professional environment in favour of peace. By wearing the Pin’s for Peace, everyone can become Ambassador for Peace. The Pin’s for Peace needs all to spread its message. Wear it, make it known most widely possible!

It is a long-term commitment to help empower African youth, entrepreneurs, developers, and business and civic leaders to turn great ideas into a reality that can help their community, their country, the continent and beyond.

The 4Afrika Initiative is built on the dual beliefs that technology can accelerate growth for Africa, and Africa can also accelerate technology for the world. We want to help Africa become a net producer of technology, rather than a net consumer. We believe

that African innovation can and should shape Africa’s future.4Afrika is tightly connected to Microsoft’s network of more than 10,000 existing partners in Africa today, a network we have built through more than 20 years of investing and operating in the continent. Microsoft’s business model is built on a strong partner network, globally, and Africa is no different. 4Afrika leverages these existing partnerships and is working to create new ones across the public and private sectors to help advance common goals and to create value for Africans, by Africans.
