Hawken Athletics Camps Hawken Soccer Camp

Ages 5 - 14

June 6 - June 109:00 am - 3:00 pmGates Mills Campus$300 Hawken Soccer Camp is a one-week soccer camp for young players, boys and girls, 5-14 years old (entering Kindergarten through eighth grade). Hawken Soccer Camp will be led by Hawken School Boys Varsity Soccer Coach, Dani Giulvezan, as well as area club and high school coaches. Each day we will focus on different skill sets, including dribbling, passing and receiving, heading, crossing, shooting, and team play. In addition to skill development, emphasis will be placed on exciting soccer-based games, such as small-sided games, skill games, and scrimmages. All sessions will be challenging and fun!

Players will be divided into age and ability groups based on number of participants. Player-to-coach ratio will not exceed 12 to 1. All players will receive a Hawken Soccer Camp t-shirt.

NOTE: Participants must bring their own lunch and drinks each day. Pool time will be made available throughout the week.

Hawken Athletics CampsHawken Athletics Camps offer skill-driven, sport-centered instruction for individuals seeking to improve their game. Taught the “Hawken way” and led by Hawken coaches, Hawken Athletics Summer Camps are a chance for young athletes to hone their skills, improve team-play, and learn from the best. Campers will work hard, test their limits, and have a blast doing it. Instructionwill be structured around individualized skill development, team-play components, situational games, and live-action play.

In addition to daily activities, camp participants will receive a Hawken Athletics T-shirt. Drop off and pick up are located at the specific venue where the camp will take place (court, field, etc.). Transportation and pre- and after-care are NOT available for Athletics Summer Camps.

All Hawken Athletics Summer Camps must meet minimum enrollment numbers by May 1, 2016 for camps to proceed. Early registration is encouraged and allows us to guarantee camps at earlier dates, as soon as enrollment is sufficient. A $100 non-refundable deposit must accompany the registration form. No sibling discounts are available.

Basketball Camp

Ages 6 - 14

June 6 - June 109:00 am - 12:00 pmGates Mills Campus$200 Hawken Basketball Camp will focus on individual and team skills, game play, and fun. Camp will be run with a station format with individual instruction, focusing on shooting (utilizing a state-of-the-art shooting machine), ball handling, passing, and defensive techniques. Team concepts and competitive skills will be taught through 1-on-1, 3-on-3, and 5-on-5 competitions and simulated game situations. Time will be spent teaching within the framework of real game situations.

Please Note: Campers must bring a drink and a snack to camp each day.

Shawn McGregorHead Varsity Boys Basketball Coach at Hawken School for past twelve years, Coach McGregor’s teams have won the Chagrin Valley Championships in 2008, 2010, and 2011. Coach McGregor is a three-time CVC Coach of the Year, two-time Northeast Ohio Coach of the Year, and many of his players have gone on to play in college. He is also on the football and baseball coaching staffs at Hawken.

Bert Kovarik Coach Kovarik brings over forty years of coaching experience from elementary, middle, and high school in both boys and girls programs. Currently he is the Assistant Head Coach, Hawken Boys Varsity Basketball, and the Head Coach, Hawken Boys Varsity Golf. Coach Kovarik has been coaching at Hawken for the past sixteen years.

Other members of the Hawken Boys Basketball Staff will be present to assist with the camp, along with Hawken Basketball Alumni, current collegiate players, and special guests.

Summer Running Camp

Ages 10 - 12, Ages 13-14

June 6 - June 109:00 am - 12:00 pm Gates Mills Campus $200

Running is a lifestyle as well as a sport. Some people run for fun, others for fitness, and some for competition. Come learn about some of the basics of running while having a lot of fun. Campers will learn the basics of endurance running mechanics, basic sprinting mechanics, ballistic and static stretching, general diet and fitness for runners, and basic race training for competition. Activities will include stretching, running, playing ultimate Frisbee and other aerobic endurance related activities, a running scavenger hunt, and The Amazing Race Hawken style.

Please Note: Campers should come with a pair of running shoes and the ability to run at least 1 mile without stopping if in 4th -6th grade and 2 miles without stopping if in 7th-8th grade.

Joel Rabe Coach Joel Rabe, a Level One certified USATF coach and also a certified Endurance Specialist with USTFCCCA, is the Head Coach of the Varsity Boys and Girls Hawken Cross Country Teams. Coach Rabe has been coaching cross country and track and field at Hawken for the past six years.

Camp counselors will include current and alumni Hawken varsity track and cross country athletes.

Jim Bocci

Coach Jim Bocci is the Head Coach, Hawken Boys and Girls Varsity Swimming. He is also the Aquatics Director at Hawken School, and the Director and CEO of Lake Erie Silver Dolphins. Prior to coming to Hawken, Coach Bocci was the Director of Swimming at the Spire Institute, and Head Swimming Coach at Fork Union Military Academy where he built a nationally-ranked swimming program. In October of 2015, Coach Bocci was one of eight coaches selected for the 2015 National Select Camp at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. The National Select Camp invites the top high school swimmers in the country to train at Olympic Training Center, with some of the top coaches in the nation.

Wrestling CampAges 6-14

Wrestling camp is a great opportunity for both the novice and the experienced wrestler. Conducted in the Hawken varsity wrestling room, we develop the fundamentals of scholastic, or “folk style” wrestling. In all training and wrestling, participants will be matched by weight and experience. Emphasis will be placed on attacking and takedowns, turns and pinning combinations, defensive wrestling, set-ups, and escapes and reversals. Individualized instruction will be a priority, and every day will include live wrestling and fun activities.

Participants should have wrestling shoes and headgear. A camp T-shirt is included with registration.

Bob Rodriguez

Bob Rodriguez has been coaching wrestling at Hawken for 22 years, the past 17 as the Head Varsity Coach. Coach Rodriguez has produced many state qualifiers and collegiate wrestlers during his years at Hawken. He wrestled for the famed Longwood YMCA wrestling program and was a state qualifier himself when wrestling for Nordonia High School. Bob wrestled collegiately at Baldwin Wallace University, where he also became a student assistant coach. Coach Rodriguez is a master clinician and instructor for wrestlers of all ages.

Jim Doyle

Coach Doyle is the Head Coach, Hawken Wrestling Club. He was a youth, middle school, high school, and collegiate wrestler, his college experience with Division III National Champion, The College of New Jersey (formerly Trenton State). He also brings over ten years of coaching experience at the youth, middle school, and varsity levels.

Assistant coaches and guest clinicians will also be present, based on the number of participants.

Boys Lacrosse CampJune 20-24 Ages 5-10June 27-July 1 Ages 10-14

9:00 am - 12:00 pmGates Mills Campus$200 Hawks Lacrosse Camp is a great opportunity for the both the experienced player and as an introduction to the “Fastest Game on Two Feet!” Younger campers will focus on ground balls, cradling, dodging, throwing/catching, and shooting; the older group will emphasize these skills, as well as speed and agility, position-specific training, and “lacrosse IQ” utilizing film study and game situations. Both camps will feature situational play, instructional lacrosse games, scrimmages, and an experienced staff.Campers will need a mouthpiece, gloves, arm pads, shoulders pads, and a helmet. Whether learning the basics of the game, or taking another step forward as a lacrosse player and athlete, please join our staff for what promises to be a fun and exciting week at Hawken School!

Bryce Woodson

Coach Bryce Woodson is the Head Coach, Hawken Boys Varsity Lacrosse. He played high school lacrosse at The Salisbury School in Connecticut before going on to play four years of Varsity Men’s Lacrosse at Ohio State University. He was the Buckeye’s Captain in 2010-2011. After Ohio State, Mr. Woodson has coached at the Ransom Everglades School in Miami, Florida, for the Santa Monica Dragons Lacrosse Club in California, for Resolute Lacrosse in Columbus, Ohio.

Swimming CampJune 20-24 Ages 13 +June 27-July 1 Ages 8 - 12

Hawken Swim Camps offer a unique experience designed to specifically develop the four competitive strokes, plus starts and turns. Technique, efficiency and speed will all improve.

Learn from some of the top coaches in the country the same techniques, tips, and training principles that have made Hawken Swimming and Lake Erie Silver Dolphins two of the preeminent programs in the nation. Each three-hour training session includes a performance and stroke seminar, along with water instruction and training.

Camp spans five days, where each day is devoted to a specific stroke, with the final day focused on starts and turns.

Camp runs from 9:00 am – 12:00 pm daily, Monday through Friday. Each swimmer should bring a suit, two pairs of goggles, water bottle, cap (optional), and a towel.

Football CampAges 5 - 12

June 13- June 171:00 pm- 4:00 pmGates Mills Campus$200

Hawken Football Camp will be a fun week where all participants will practice the fundamentals of the game of football. In all training and playing, participants will be taught proper football techniques of running, throwing, catching, blocking, and kicking, as well as the basic rules of the game, and team play and strategies. There will be limited opportunity for live competition within the group. All instruction will be without helmets and pads and there will be no tackling or hitting.

Game play will be a regular part of each day’s instruction, including flag football games, where they will have the opportunity to display their football skills in real game situations.

Cliff Walton

The long-time beloved football coach at Hawken and the namesake of Walton Stadium, Cliff Walton has amassed over 200 Hawken football wins in his career. He has been named 1981 Class-A Football Coach of the Year, 1986 Geauga County Football Coach of the Year, 1986 News-Herald Class A-AA Football Coach of the Year, 2012 D-IV Football Co-coach of the Year, 2012 Ohio Football Coach of the Year, and the CVC Football Coach of the Year many times. His 1987 football team was ranked #30 in the area’s top 50 high school football teams by the News Herald, which also ranked his Hawken program as #3 in the top 30 all-time best prep school football programs. Coach Walton has sent scores of football players off to play at the college level.

Dan Walton

A 1996 Hawken graduate and quarterback, wide receiver, and safety on the Hawks Football team ’92-’95, Coach Walton was member of the Hawks 1993 State Semi-finalist team. He has been an Assistant Varsity Coach at Hawken for 14 years, coaching quarterbacks and defensive back, and serving as the Offensive Coordinator for the 2014 and 2015 seasons.

Aaron Brandt

The son of a former Hawken Varsity Head Coach, Aaron earned 3 Varsity Letters playing for the Hawks in the mid 80’s. After high school, he was on the Guilford College team for one year before focusing on baseball. Upon graduation from college, Aaron returned to coach in the Hawken program for the past 23 years, working as a Varsity assistant for 5 years, middle school head coach for 16 years, and, most recently, collaborating with other Hawken fathers to create the youth football program.

Tennis Camp

June 13 - June 17 Gates Mills Campus $200

Tennis camp will combine fun activities, tennis skill games, and individualized instruction for the novice and experienced tennis player. Led by season tennis professionals and Hawken Varsity players, emphasis will be placed on service, mechanics, ground strokes, volleying, defensive play, and both singles and doubles strategies. Camp is held on the beautiful, state-of-the-art tennis facility at Hawken Upper School. All campers will receive a camp shirt. Tennis balls will be provided.

Campers should come with a pair of proper tennis shoes, their own racquet, and a water bottle.

Brian Smallwood

Brian Smallwood has been developing grassroots tennis programs for over 20 years in downtown Cleveland and surrounding suburbs. He is currently the Head Coach for Hawken Boys Tennis and a tennis professional at The Cleveland Racquet Club. Brian was Vice President for USPTA Northeastern Ohio Section, has coached juniors ranked in Northeastern Ohio District, Midwest Section and National Levels and coached the 2004 Jr. Tennis Midwest Section Team Champions as well as the finalists three other years. From 2003-2015 has personally trained 28 High School State Qualifiers To the OHSAA Tournament and from 1999-2015 developed 42 Collegiate Players who have played at Division I, II and III colleges. Brian was a member of the 2009 5.0 USTA National Qualifying team and has won awards as 2000 USPTA Rookie of the Year award, 2012 USTA Midwest Section NJTL of The Year, 2012 USTA Midwest Section Outstanding Performance of the Year by an Organization and was issued a proclamation by the City of Cleveland for in 2012 for his work as the Executive Director of the Inner City Tennis Clinics, a non-profit tennis based program that offers literacy, wellness, fitness and creative expression for urban at-risk children in Cleveland.
