Washington D.C.For most college students, Spring Break is spent somewhere warm and on a beach. For three Agricultural Education students, Spring Break was spent in Washington D.C. with 17 other members of the ACE 291 class where they met with legislators, agency officials and organization heads directly engaged in the food and agricultural policy process. Andrew Klein, Chandler Bruns, and Kaity Spangler had the opportunity to meet with individuals such as Dale Moore, Executive Director of Public Policy at American Farm Bureau, Chuck Connor, President and CEO of the National Council of Farmer Cooperatives, and Congressman Rodney Davis.

Ag Ed Day On Friday, April 15th, 17 high school students and 11 parents and agriculture teachers from across Illinois attended Ag Ed Day. More than 27 Agricultural Education alumni, university faculty, and students presented workshops, provided tours, and answered questions from prospective students.

ACES COMMENCEMENT Twenty students and six faculty participated in the University of Illinois College of ACES Commencement ceremony on Sunday, May 15. In addition to receiving their diplomas, three Agricultural Education students were recognized at the college level for special awards -- Shelby Cooper, James Scholar Award, finalist for the Pioneer Hi-Bred Hugh Morrison Award and finalist for the Warren K. Wessels Achievement Award; Clayton Carley, recipient of the Pioneer Hi-Bred Hugh Morrison Award; and Jacob Dickey, finalist for the Pioneer Hi-Bred Hugh Morrison Award. CHS Foundation Room

Professional Networking Event

The Agricultural Education Program was honored to welcome Linda Tank, Senior Vice President, CHS Communications and Public Affairs, along with many students, alumni, and College of ACES faculty to the dedication ceremony of the Agricultural Education and Leadership Learning Space. Thanks to the CHS Foundation, the Agricultural Education Program has a learning environment that is welcoming for future students and upholds the standards of excellence set forth by the University of Illinois as a leader in research and education.

Ag Leadership Education students enjoyed the last day of Dr. Keating’s AGED 310 (Professional Development) class with a networking event. Students met and interacted with professionals from organizations including GROWMARK, Extension, Agrible, Peace Corps, The Career Center, and AgCreate.

Undergraduate seniors and graduate students returned to campus for seminar sessions after completing their student teaching experiences. This group of future teachers toured high school agriculture programs throughout Illinois, visited with faculty and staff at the Illinois Association FFA Center, and completed professional development workshops with industry representatives. They also participated in discussion panels with high school agriculture teachers and current university students who will student teach next year.
