Introduction

In association with WWF-India, Aircel has constituted the Support Initiative Fund (SIF) for tiger conservation.

Through this initiative, support is provided for infrastructure development, equipment and training for Forest Department, and technological assistance for tiger monitoring and protection.

Following is the overview of the initiatives presently implemented in wildlife sanctuaries across India.

Panna Tiger Reserve

WWF-India, with support from Aircel SIF, provided a four-wheeler and a motorcycle, to increase mobility of the staff of the tiger reserve and thereby deter poachers.

Page 4: Aircel wwf initiatives

These vehicles will help forest officials observe the tigers recently translocated here, and help oversee the process of re-population of Panna.

Katerniaghat Sanctuary (UP)

For increasing protection of tigers, WWF-India, with support from Aircel SIF, provided the following items:

1 speed boat for patrolling Girwa and Kauriala rivers

2 iron cages for translocating stray tigers and leopards

150 jackets given for the frontline staff of the forest department to help in better patrolling

Simlipal Tiger Reserve

WWF-India, with support from Aircel SIF, provided one four wheeler vehicle to increasing patrolling and

combat wildlife crime.

Sathyamangalam Sanctuary

10 binoculars and 10 GPS devices were provided to the Forest Department staff in the sanctuary.

These equipments will be used for creating a baseline for tigers, and for future monitoring of tigers, co-predators and prey-base in this area.

Nameri & Pakke Resrves (Assam)

Six country boats provided on the park manager’s suggestion, to be used as mobile camps, increasing mobility of the staff.

230 winter jackets provided to Forest Department staff to increase capability to move in the field during winter and monsoon seasons.

Sonai Rupai Sanctuary (Assam)

Supported construction of 1 anti-poaching camp through Aircel’s SIF, in association with WWF.

Provided 50 winter jackets to field staff to ensure better equipped personnel in the field.

Orang National Park (Assam)

Provided 150 winter jackets to field staff that would help them in field patrolling in winter and monsoons.

Nameri Tiger Reserve

Combat training given to frontline staff to help tackle critical situations and anti-poaching operations.

Nameri Tiger Reserve

20 field training sessions organized and tiger population monitored. WWF-India assisted the Forest Dept. in

putting up camera traps to monitor tigers accurately.

Community Awareness

Summer coaching camp organized for 80 students from the fringe villages of Orang National Park to raise

awareness and to avert human-tiger conflicts.

Community Awareness

22 students from fringe areas of Orang National Park taken on a wildlife awareness camp to Kaziranga for

giving them exposure on better wildlife management.
