But identity does not result simply from shapes or skins. It comes about from an understanding and reconnection with culture. Architecture transcends mere art and is the embodiment of culture. Compared to other art forms, it is unique in that it is tied both to a place and to its time. In this regard, Asia is a place with disparate cultural and physical landscapes where modern and tradition cultures co-exist, and in her more cosmopolitan cities like Hong Kong values from diverging times and places converge and collide. A truly unique work of architecture with genuine identity would therefore only result from the resolution of such values, rather than a single-dimensional pursuit of the stylistic or technical agenda. If architecture is indeed to be authentic and sustainable, it should address such diverse cultural phenomena like legacy, spatiality, community, density, connectivity and materiality.” Dr. Rocco Yim, FHKIA, RIBA, Hon. Conceived in the form of architectural case studies, the lectures aim to convey the challenges confronted by the architects from design inception of the project through its material realization in construction. “Every architect takes pride in designing something with strong identity. But identity does not result

simply from shapes or skins. It comes about from an understanding and reconnection with culture.

Architecture transcends mere art and is the embodiment of culture. Compared to other art forms,

it is unique in that it is tied both to a place and to its time. In this regard, Asia is a place with disparate

cultural and physical landscapes where modern and tradition cultures co-exist, and in her more

cosmopolitan cities like Hong Kong values from diverging times and places converge and collide. A truly

unique work of architecture with genuine identity would therefore only result from the resolution of

such values, rather than a single-dimensional pursuit of the stylistic or technical agenda. If architecture

is indeed to be authentic and sustainable, it should address such diverse cultural phenomena like

legacy, spatiality, community, density, connectivity and materiality.”

The Fall Lecture Series at CUHK is organized around projects awarded by the HKIA Annual Awards

2014. Conceived in the form of architectural case studies, the lectures aim to convey the challenges

confronted by the architects from design inception of the project through its material realization in

construction.
