Think tank: AkzoNobel’s costcutting in a low growth worldunderscores a coming trend

AkzoNobel’s cost-cuttingprogramme signals that the surgein demand after the 2008-2009global recession appears to havetruly come to an end. Today, themajority of chemical companiesare operating in an environmentwhere demand is softer anddownward price pressure isincreasing. The Netherlands-based coatings producer’s €500 M($686 M) cost-reduction plan isaimed at allowing the company toremain profitable amidst increasedraw material costs, mainly

titanium dioxide, poor demandgrowth, and a margin change inits product mix. AkzoNobel sawits earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization fall12% to €507 M in 3Q 2011.
