There aren’t enough day care spaces for children in the Alberni Valley, according to Katherin Charbonneau, a childcare consultant with Pacific Care and a representative of the

Port Alberni branch of the Early Childhood Educators of B.C. and Alberni Children First.

Charbonneau was up in front of city council on April 25 to highlight the importance of childcare to the community.

“Quality childcare is essential to communities, employers, children and families and the economy,” she said.

“Childcare is really important and we are in a crisis. There aren’t enough spaces for children.”

The $10-a-day childcare plan that city council endorsed last April is a start, noted Charbonneau, but the conversation needs to be kept alive.

“Families are able to leave children with the peace of mind that they’re being left in

enriched play based environment. Families are able to entre the workforce, to go to school, perform community service and receive essential family support that in turn allows them to support the healthy development of their

children.”May is childcare

month and the Early Childhood Educators of B.C. are looking to highlight those who go above and beyond.

“In May, we would like to highlight the important role that early childhood

plays and we’d like to honour the early care and learning providers of Port Alberni for the care they provide everyday.”

A troupe of tourism professionals

from Atlantic Canada trekked to Vancouver Island last week on a “best practices” mission to learn travel tips from West Coast gurus.

The group, whose members are all individually involved in the tourism industry in the Maritimes, travelled to Vancouver Island on a five-day expedition to learn how tourism companies operate on the West Coast.

The gang spent two nights in Parksville and two nights in Tofino prior to heading to Port Alberni for an afternoon of kayaking on the Alberni Harbour.

Blake Johnson, owner of Batstar

Adventure Tours in Port Alberni, guided the visitors around the Alberni Canal on his kayaks while explaining historic facts about the Alberni Valley and answering questions regarding tourism

on the West Coast and his business practices.

“You’re always learning something in this trade,” said Rick Stanley, owner of Ocean Quest Adventures in Newfoundland.

The trip was a first for Stanley and his wife Debbie. Stanley said was learning a lot from his trip about quality assurance, risk management and how to deliver a promise and interact with guests.

“I’ll be back,” he added.

Merideth Caissie, tourism manager with the City of Bathurst, New Brunswick, said the trip was a fantastic way to develop a network, get out and see how things

are done in different municipalities and learn from their experiences to apply to their own businesses.

“It’s unifying how similar the natural resources and lifestyles are from the

East to the West,” she said.

Once arrived back in his hometown of Summerside, Prince Edward Island, Greg Weeks, owner of P.E.I Segway Tours, said he will give a presentation to fellow tourism professionals on his learnings from the West Coast.

“A rising tide floats all boats,” Weeks said to explain how when one tourism business strives, many more operations within the tourism umbrella will also benefit.

The mission was managed by the Tourism Cafe, a Vancouver Island based tourism consultancy business led by Lesley Anderson, learning and development facilitator from Nanaimo.

A fire that broke out in a motor home parked at E.J. Dunn Elementary School just before 7 p.m. on May 4 caused only minor smoke and water damage to the school building itself.

“It started at the motor home and spread to another car,” said Port Alberni Fire Department Deputy Chief Wes Patterson. Three Port Alberni trucks and one Beaver Creek Volunteer Fire Department truck responded to the blaze, along with one RCMP and ambulance.

Patterson said that a propane leak was the cause of the motor home fire and that one man was taken to hospital with minor injuries. The motor home belonged to one of the workers at the school.

“One person was taken to the hospital but not necessarily by B.C. Ambulance.”

The school remained largely unharmed, although firefighters removed some panelling off the

front of the building to ensure that sparks didn’t grow into hot spots and active fire, said Patterson.

“There’s water damage from the sprinkler that’s gone off and a little smoke damage inside and then the front entrance doors [are damaged] but all in all it was very lucky. The building and the controls and the sprinkler system did what it was supposed to do which limited the spread of the fire. Structurally the school is fine.”

A car parked beside the motor home was destroyed by the fire.

In a letter to students, school officials stated that while there would be no disruption to the school schedule, traffic patterns and office operations would be altered due to the fire.

The front parking lot will remain closed until the damage to the school can be repaired and the office will be moved to room 706. A back parking lotis available off of 18th Avenue.

From A1Other Port Alberni

residents working in Fort Mac have returned, family members are sheltering relatives from the ravaged city, and others have gone to Fort Mac to help.

Coulson Aviation’s Sikorsky S-61’s was contracted by the Province of Alberta to fight the fires in Fort McMurray but the Martian Mars water bomber has not been deployed.

The lack of deployment of the water bomber has caused many folks to express their frusterations on social media.

Due to the large public interest, owner Wayne Coulson posted a response on Facebook.

“We understand the frustration of the public, especially in a case like this where a fire is consuming property and threatening lives,” Coulson wrote.

Coulson provided

three main reasons why the 70-year-old plane isn’t in Fort McMurray.

The Alberta government has not requested the presence of the Martian Mars, Coulson wrote, adding that a C-130 was offered to be made available immediately.

“Next to the Mars at 7200 USG, our C-130’s are the largest propeller driven air tankers in the world with a 4400 USG capacity,” he wrote.

Secondly, Coulson added that in the firefighting business it is the government that has operational control of the aircraft.

“No aircraft operator in the world can

simply go and put out a fire, even if they wanted to and if someone ever did, they would be facing serious criminal charges,” Coulson wrote.

Finally, Coulson wrote that the Mars is under its yearly inspection and it has been decided to take the aircraft to the Oshkosh Air Show in late July in hopes of finding another business or home for it.

A crowdfunding initiative by Black Press called BlackPress4Good offers several campaigns to those who want to help support the damaging wildfires in Fort McMurray. Visit blackpress4good.com and search Fort McMurray.

Highway 4 Band has also planned a music benefit for the Red Cross on Sunday, May 15, 1 p.m. at Harbour Quay.

‘There was a lot of tension and fear’KRISTI DOBSONSPECIAL TO THE NEWS

Last week Phaedra McEachren returned home to Port Alberni as one of the evacuees from Fort McMurray. As a cook at Noralta Lodge, an accommodation facility for workers in the oil and gas industries, she was one of the last to leave during the mandatory evacuation from the growing wildfire.

Located about 18 km north of Fort McMurray, McEachren remained relatively safe. A week ago the fire appeared to be contained, but within 24 hours, McEachren said the fire chief announced it had jumped the river and highway. From where she was, McEachren had a view of plumes of smoke moving

closer, and the sense of fear at the lodge grew.

“There was a lot of tension and fear, but also a lot of camaraderie with our team members,” she said. “We wanted to help the families (who fled to the lodge). There were a lot of tears and heartbreak, but they were grateful. We made kid-friendly lunches. I played with

(the children) on my break and let them wear my cook’s hat.”

By Thursday, the evacuees staying at the lodge had to leave as the fire intensified.

McEachren said the working conditions were difficult. The kitchen was about 35 degrees Celsius and smoky.

“It was very smoky and hazy,” she said. “It was hard to breathe, I

was coughing and my eyes were burning. It was very emotional but we knew we had to keep it together for all the families who lost their homes...by the time everyone was evacuated, I broke down.”

That was just after McEachren finished working 22 straight 12-hour shifts.

The fire continued to grow and move north, so the entire lodge, including all workers, were evacuated by the weekend. While she was in the midst of it, McEachren said she heard of all the goodwill and offers to help.

“It’s amazing to know how many people stepped up to help others in need,” she said. “People with no connection, yet willing to help.”

The images on the TV news and across the Internet of the devastating fire in Fort McMurray have been terrifying and heartbreaking. The entire population of Fort

McMurray, and then surrounding areas, was forced to run for their lives last week as bad luck in the form of a wind shift sent a massive wildfire into the northern Alberta city of 80,000.More than 1,600 structures were razed

and entire neighbourhoods were swallowed by the inferno. Incredibly, the fire did not directly claim any lives—although two teenagers fleeing the fire were killed in a car crash as they were making their way to an emergency shelter in Edmonton. The shock is only now wearing off, and

the reality of the number of people left with nothing but the clothes on their backs and the vehicle that sped them through the flames to safety is sinking in.While Alberta and the federal government

work to fight the fire and deal with the shocking aftermath, there is much you can do to help your fellow Canadians. Social media sites are already replete

with offers by strangers for fire victims to come and stay in their homes. Other sites have been set up for donations—make sure it is a legitimate organization before you decide to donate, as unfortunately there are some out there taking advantage of Fort Mac victims’ plight.Donations are being accepted by myriad

organizations, including the Canadian Red Cross (text REDCROSS to 30333 to make a $5 donation).BC liquor stores are accepting donations. Our colleagues at the Red Deer Advocate

have created a crowdfunding account at www.blackpress4good.com that will go to the Red Cross. Now is the time to set aside political

differences, opinions on the oilsands or climate change, and help our neighbours.

Wizards flock to the annual school of magic at McLean Mill aboard the Millwarts Express in October 2006. The train started out on Platform 9 1/2 in Port Alberni, and ‘wizards’ were separated into ‘house’s by prefects, who met them on the train. Wouldn’t it be great if the Millwarts Express returned in 2016?

I feel they should absolutely monitor air quality as a service to the community.

Yes I do. All industry emissions should be closely monitored to ensure compliance with regulatory standards.

Absolutely, just for filtering the Valley’s air, it is important to monitor.

Question: Do you think a new biotech company in Port Alberni should have to continuously monitor its air quality?

We’re celebrating a decade of bringing community news to the Valley.

•••The Alberni Valley News held a contest for Mother’s Day,

where children wrote in on “Why your mom is so special”. Austin Patterson’s essay was chosen as the winner: “The reasons I love my mom are she is very kind and is always there for me and my siblings. She puts us before herself... My mom has been through so much that I want to say how much she does for us and deserves to win something as I feel she is the best mother in the world and wouldn’t

Wayne Irwin CHAPPINJuly 3, 1933 to May 2, 2016

It is with great sorrow we announce that Wayne Irwin passed away unexpectedly, but peacefully, in his sleep May 2nd, 2016 at the age of 82 years.Wayne was met with open arms those who had gone before him: his father and mother Walter and Florence Chappin and his brother Gordon.Left to grieve and carry on his memory are his siblings, sisters Georgina (Gerrit) Pley and Tricia Chappin, both from Port Alberni, brother Al (Donna) Chappin residing in Courtenay, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins, his dear friend Muriel and countless friends and acquaintances too numerous to mention. Wayne began his working career as a teenager at McLean’s Mill and ended it with 25 years of hard work at Canfor Forest Products in Prince George receiving special recognition for his years of faithful service. He spent his retirement years in Port Alberni to be close to family. Wayne was always on the go, and you could often see him “scootering” all around Port Alberni; out Beaver Creek to visit family, enjoying a meal at Solda’s or up to the Casino for a few rounds of Bingo.Wayne’s family would like to extend a special thanks to all the nurses and staff at Rainbow Gardens for the specialized care they gave him over the last 5 years. He made many special friends during his time there, both with staff and other residents. Also a big thanks to Ivo, Patti and the staff at Solda’s Restaurant. Wayne went there often and they truly made him feel like family.Cremation will take place and Wayne will be laid with his mother Florence at Greenwood Cemetary. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, May 14th from 1 to 3 pm at Solda’s Restaurant. Stories and condolences may be forwarded to the family by visiting www.yatesfuneral.ca

In 1956 a young 18-year old boy, Tony Vanschie, left his homeland of Holland and trav-eled to Canada with only two suitcases.

He ended up in the Fraser Valley, Agassiz to be exact and there he worked on a dairy farm, as farming is what he knew about from his homeland.

Vanschie only worked there for a year before he came to the Alberni Valley and went to work at the APD mill for six years.

He then went to work for a local roofer as an apprentice and then worked for Hayes Roo ng and was with them for 16 years before starting out on his own with Vanschie Roo ng a compa-ny that is still in business.

As Vanschie said, “Once I started my own business I never looked back.”

Vanschie hired his son Rick to work with him 30 years ago and he also has an employee Tom Pearce who has been with

him for 27 years. His son Mitch lls in whenever he can nd the time. They also have a part time employee, Wyatt Race.

The Vanschies on average, roof 200 houses a year. Roo ng has changed over the years in that they used to use asphalt shingles and now use laminated berglass shingles. They also do shake roofs, torch on, metal and

insulated decks. Vanschie owns the company

but his son says he is not the average boss.

“My son calls me the snoop-er-visor as I have a hand in every job we do. I am also the oldest working roofer in the Valley.”

Vanschie is liability and WCB approved and also offers seniors a 10% discount.

ARTS THE

First Nations art to hang at new parkKARLY BLATSALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

Aboriginal artist, Gordon Dick, will be hanging

an original 11-foot-by-3-foot wood-carving that commemorates his grandfather at the new Central Park on Third Avenue and Angus Street.

Dick has been a career artist on the Island for more than 20 years and is the owner of Ahtsik Native Art Gallery, where he’s been selling his original Northwest Coast Art since 2008.

Much of Dick’s artwork symbolizes family roots, stories or traditions, much like his piece for Central Park which tells a story about teachings and influence Dick received from his grandfather when he was young during fishing trips on the river.

“I don’t think it could go in such a better place in the Valley,” Dick said. “It’s a very personal piece to me.”

The new park is located on Third Avenue and Angus Street in Port Alberni’s uptown and is estimated to be opened by the end of May.

Growing up mainly

on the west coast of Vancouver Island, Dick said he became intersted in carving and First Nations art from going to traditional ceremonies and through his

grandparents’ influence.

Dick sells both small and large-scale artworks in his store and by special order.

“I always think of myself now as a

student,” Dick said. “I’m going to try and learn as much as I can from anyone and everyone.”

Child Care MonthKARLY BLATSALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

The Huu-ay-aht First Nations Paawats is a fully-licensed child- care facility that aims to provide a holistic approach to child and family services.

Paawats, meaning “nest” in Huu-ay-aht, opened in Port Alberni in November 2014, with a sister facility in Anacla that opened in 2007.

“We’re finding that more and more Huu-ay-aht citizens are living in Port Alberni, it’s kind of where our largest population base is, so we decided that we needed to have a culturally appropriate child care and early childhood programs here in the Valley,” said Kathy Waddell, director of community services at Paawats.

The Paawats house, located on Elizabeth Street, provides

culturally-appropriate care for First Nations children, most of which are Huu-ay-aht with a mission to provide cultural early childhood programming

that will enable children and families to achieve their full potential, spiritually, mentally, emotionally and physically.

The children learn about

their culture through a variety of activities and elders will often bring Huu-ay-aht knowledge to Paawats through traditional teachings and language.

“We try to have different cultural activities going on,” Waddell said. “We have people who come and do drum making, drumming, singing and dancing.”

The centre offers 14 spots each to children needing day care, preschool and after-school care five days a week.

Expanding culturally is on the horizon for Paawats, Waddell said, as they are looking for extra funding to pursue writing a culturally-based children’s book that would focus on Nuu-chah-nulth values.

In addition to children’s services, the centre offers programs and support for whole families through parent support groups, women’s groups and family nights.

“We really envision supporting the whole family,” Waddell said.

“Children have a lovely safe place... and we have other programs as well that equally support parents.”

JANIS JOSEPHSPECIAL TO THE NEWS

Watching TV, surfing the web and playing computer games or small handheld devices can be good fun and even educational, but spending too much time sitting still each day can be bad for our health.

It’s important to balance screen time with active play time so our bodies can grow strong, fit and healthy.

Did you know that 92 per cent of children aged 12-17 years old watched television, used the internet, or played computer games for more than two hours a day?

And nearly half of children aged between five and 15 years spend more than two hours every day on ‘small screen’ entertainment.

Screen time is quickly taking over our lives and the lives of our children while playgrounds and some neighbourhoods sit idly quiet.

I recently place my four children on a “device detox” that has lasted four weeks. In order to take away

devices, it was up to me to replace their constant behaviour elsewhere, so we purchased weights, skipping ropes, soccer and volley balls and got ourselves up to the track to move our bodies.

It is a work in progress, and there have been some withdrawal symptoms, but in the end, the kids are becoming more active and less complacent.

Every new change in life will take time for adjustment, but if we the parents do not intervene and show (not tell) our children how to live a healthier lifestyle, they will continue to isolate themselves and become less social, and communicative than those enjoying being active.

The Alberni Valley offers an exquisite array of trails to hike and walk through, playgrounds with picnic tables to spend an afternoon in either in town our near the water, bike parks, soccer and ball fields and so much more that do not cost anything a family to visit.

Take advantage of our community, and change screen time into family time.
