- Alcorn head coach Montez Robinson was named SWAC Coach of the Year. His squad was projected to finish in fifth-place in the SWAC Preseason Poll but rose three spots to earn the No. 2 seed. It came after Alcorn went from ninth-place to second-place after his first year.

- In two seasons, Robinson hoists a 26-10 conference record. He coached the Braves to back-to-back winning seasons in conference for the first time since 2001-02, 02-03.

- Alcorn’s 18 wins overall were the most since 2001-02 when it won 20 games. That was also the last time the Braves had a winning season overall.

- Senior Marquis Vance earned All-Conference First-Team honors. He finished his four-year career at Alcorn with 1,303 points, 803 rebounds, 209 assists, 80 blocks, 70 double-figure scoring games and 11 double-doubles. He played in 124 matches and made 107 starts. This season, he ranked top-10 in the league in rebounding, blocks and assists. Vance’s career-high was 30 points set at Grambling on Feb. 9, 2015.

- Junior Reginal Johnson was selected to both the All-Conference Second-Team and SWAC All-Tournament Team. A two-time SWAC Player of the Week winner, Johnson scored at least 10 points in 30 of the last 31 games. He netted at least 20 points five times this season including outings of 28 and 27 in two games against MVSU.

- The Braves made a run to the finals of the SWAC Championships. They got off a last-second three-point attempt to try and send the game to overtime against Texas Southern but it fell just short and hit the front of the rim. Johnson ended with 16 points and six rebounds, while senior Denzel Dulin recorded 12 points and five rebounds.

- Both Vance and Johnson registered double-doubles against Southern in the semifinals. It was the third time Alcorn saw two student-athletes record double-doubles in the same game as both junior A.J. Mosby and Johnson did it against Rust College, and Johnson and Vance did it at Grambling.

- In the SWAC first round, the Braves were clinging to a one point lead when Dulin came up with a huge steal on MVSU’s final possession and then hit a pair of clutch free throws. Mosby led the team with 17 points and six rebounds, while Johnson neared a double-double with 15 points and nine rebounds. Dulin was also a heavy contributor with 13 points and eight rebounds.

- The Braves went on an 11-game winning-streak in conference which was the fifth longest active streak in the nation. It was also the fourth longest in program history, and the longest since 1998-99. Alcorn also held a six-game

- Alcorn was 15-2 this season when leading at half, 8-1 when holding the opposition to under 60 points and 6-0 when shooting over 50 percent from the field.

- The Braves finished 11-2 at home where they outscored the opposition 979-807.

- Johnson led the team with 15.6 points and 7.1 rebounds per game while shooting .527 from the field. In conference games, he ranked top-five in the league in offensive rebounds (2.3 orpg), eighth in scoring (16.0 ppg) and rebounding (6.7 rpg), and top-10 in field goal percentage (.530), defensive rebounding (4.3 drpg) and free throw percentage (.738).

- Vance also nearly averaged a double-double with 10.9 points and 7.5 rebounds per game. He drained a season-high 27 points against Alabama State at home.

- Mosby netted 10.4 points per game and shot .388 from beyond-the-arc. He recorded 17 double-figure scoring games and atallied at least 15 points in three of the last four matches. Mosby went 23-for-43 (.535) from long rinage in the final eight regular season games. He was the only Brave to start in every game this year and also the only one to play 40 minutes in a contest. In league games, he ranked third in the SWAC in three-point field goal percentage (.427), seventh in assists (2.8 apg) and ninth in minutes played (32.2 mpg).

- Senior DeAndre Davis scored nine double-figure scoring games in conference. He recorded a season-high 23 points at Texas Southern where he was 10-for-15 from the field and secured eight rebounds. It was the second time he scored at least 20 points this season. Davis shot .591 from the field in league games which ranked fourth. He was also top-10 in rebounding. Davis averaged 8.7 points per game on the year. He swatted a career-high four blocks in the finals against Texas Southern. His career-high was 26 points set at Alabama State on Feb. 22, 2016.

- Dulin put in 9.4 points per affair. He registered at least eight points in 12 conference games. He scored a career-high 20 points at Colorado State on Nov. 27.

- Freshman Maurice Howard shot team-bests of .391 (43-110) from three-point range and .814 from the free throw line. He sunk at least three three-pointers four times including against Southern in the semifinals where he scored 13 points. Howard’s career-high was 18 points at Alabama State on Jan. 21 where he went five-for-five from beyond-the-arc.

- The Braves played a loaded non-conference schedule with eight of their 11 games on the road against bigger schools. They went on a six-game road stretch where they played games in four different time zones (pacific, mountain, central and eastern time).

Alcorn went 30 days between home games.

- Robinson is in his second season at the helm. He inherited a squad that went 6-26, 4-14 SWAC in 2014-15 and more-than tripled the team’s win total last season. Robinson was a finalist for both the 2016 Ben Jobe National Coach of the Year and 2016 Joe B. Hall National Coach of the Year awards.

- Robinson coached Alcorn to its first winning SWAC season (13-5) since 2006-07 when it went 10-8.

- Before Alcorn’s first home game, brand new scoreboards and shot clocks were installed at the Davey L. Whitney Complex. It marked the fourth facility on campus to receive an upgrade this year along with football and soccer’s Jack Spinks-Marino Casem Stadium, baseball’s Willie E. “Rat” McGowan Stadium and the Alcorn Softball Complex.

- Robinson brought in three new assistant coaches for the 2016-17 season. They included the 2004 SWAC Newcomer of the Year and All-Conference First-Team honoree Delvin Thompson who played at Alcorn, Derek Thompson who has over 10 years of collegiate coaching experience and Frank Popieski who spent three years at Florida State before helping coach numerous All-Atlantic Sun performers at Stetson.

- Alcorn has already signed a pair of student-athletes to its 2017-18 roster. It added Troymain Crosby, a 6-4 combo guard from Laurel, Mississippi, and Rolando Rodgers, a 6-9 power forward from the British Virgin Islands. Both players will have four years of eligibility at Alcorn.

- The legendary Larry Smith became the first Alcorn basketball player to ever be inducted into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame in July, 2016. In four years at Alcorn, Smith averaged a double-double with 16.7 points and 11 rebounds per game, totaling 1,852 career points and 1,234 rebounds. As a senior, the 6-8 forward/center scored 20.1 points per outing and led NCAA Division I with 15.1 rebounds per contest.

After more-than tripling Alcorn State’s conference win total last season, Montez Robinson is in his second season in 2016-17 as head coach of the men’s basketball program.

Robinson inherited a squad that went 6-26, 4-14 SWAC before his arrival, and immediately turned the Braves into a contender by going 15-15, 13-5 SWAC last year. As a result, Robinson

launched Alcorn up the standings from a ninth-place team to a second-place team in just one season.

Alcorn’s enormous turnaround garnered national attention as Robinson was a finalist for both the 2016 Ben Jobe National Coach of the Year and 2016 Joe B. Hall National Coach of the Year awards.

Robinson has been a ferocious recruiter, a student of the game and a passionate teacher in the game of basketball for more than a decade. His experience not only strengthens a coaching staff, but creates a positive environment for coaches and student-athletes, alike. Prior to Alcorn, Robinson served as assistant coach for the Bethune-Cookman University men’s basketball program for four seasons. In his time at B-CU, the Wildcats advanced to the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Tournament quarterfinals twice – with a trip to the championship game in 2012. At B-CU, his primary duties included assisting in recruiting, scouting of opponents, as well as the day-to-day operations of the B-CU Basketball Office. He also served as the camp director for the Bethune-Cookman Men’s Basketball Fundamental Camp, Elite Camp and Team Camp for the past two years. He was also the lead coach for working directly with post players, including All-MEAC Tournament selection Anthony Breeze. Prior to his time at B-CU, Robinson spent six seasons at Kennesaw State University (KSU) in Kennesaw, Georgia.

While at KSU, Robinson helped the Team to transition from Division II to the Division I level of athletics and establish the Owls as one of the fastest-growing Division I Men’s Basketball programs in the country. In just their first year of reclassification, the Owls reached the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament semifinals, and won more games than any other in NCAA history for a team in reclassification in a four-year period. They would go on to rank amongst the Top 5 in the mid-major polls. In the six years at KSU, Robinson helped identify and recruit top-rated athletes to compete for the Owls program, in addition to establishing and maintaining relationships with prospective student-athletes and their parents through social interaction. He was a lead liaison for recruiting purposes. Robinson helped coach the conference’s Freshman of the Year, as well as five (5) members of the all-league team. He coached a total of 14 Players of the Week, with seven players going on to play professionally after school. Other duties at KSU included creating daily practice plans, overseeing skill development with post players and assisting with the strength and conditioning of the program, alongside the athletic performance coordinator. Just before his arrival at Kennesaw State University, Robinson was the Associate Head Coach for the men’s basketball program at Truett-McConnell College in Cleveland, Georgia. He worked for three years with the program. At Truett-McConnell College, he served as recruiting coordinator and distributed scholarships amongst the team members. He also exercised his academic prowess with monitoring the team’s academic progress through mandatory study hall sessions. He would go on to manage the housing for student-athletes on the men’s basketball squad, and act as operational officer, overseeing the entirety of travel for the team. During his tenure with Truett-McConnell, he assisted with the turnaround of the team on the court, improving from an eight-win season to a 24-win season in his first year, with just three scholarship athletes. In all, he coached a total of seven all-academic selections within the Georgia Athletic Conference (GAC), along with winning the most games in school history for a single season. Eight student-athletes went on to earn all-conference accolades, with four playing professionally after graduation. Robinson earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice from North Georgia College & State University. He played for two years at the school, serving as co-captain of the men’s basketball team both seasons. Prior to that, he played two seasons at Kemper Military Junior College in Missouri, earning his Associate Degree in Liberal Arts. He would go on to earn his Master of Science in Transformative Leadership from Bethune-Cookman University in 2014. Robinson is a member of the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC). Robinson is married to the former Ms. Leah Hornbuckle. The couple has a daughter, Tezlyn, and a son, Montez, Jr.

Robinson Restores Men’s Basketball Program On and Off the CourtIt didn’t take long for Montez Robinson to make an impact as head coach of the Alcorn State University men’s basketball program.

A ferocious recruiter, Robinson inherited a squad that went 6-26 over-all and 4-14 in conference play the year prior to his arrival. In just two seasons, he coached the Braves to back-to-back 13-5 campaigns in conference with a pair of second-place finishes. It was the first time Alcorn recorded consecutive winning seasons in 15 years.

As a result, Robinson was named the 2016-17 SWAC Coach of the Year. He was the first Alcorn coach to win that award since the great Davey L. Whitney in 2001-02.

“Coach Robinson has come in and done an awesome job. Not only has he improved the team but he’s also improved the academic standing. He’s an exciting coach and has great rapport with our student-athletes,” said director of athletics Derek Horne.

Last week, the Braves made a run to the finals of the SWAC Champion-ships. It came after Alcorn placed two student-athletes on the All-Con-ference teams for the first time since 1998-99. Senior Marquis Vance was named to the All-Conference First-Team, and junior Reginal Johnson was honored on the All-Conference Second-Team. Johnson also went on to earn a spot on the SWAC All-Tournament Team.

The season was highlighted by an 11-game winning-streak. It was the fifth longest active streak in the nation. It was also the fourth longest in program history, and the longest since 1998-99. Alcorn also held a six-game road winning-streak which was the seventh-longest in the country.

The Braves ended 18-14 overall and went a perfect 7-0 in February.

“The season was a blessing. It was an honor to be around all these players, coaches, managers, etc. Going to work has been a joy, and that’s hard for a lot of people to say. One of the things about working at the reservation

at Alcorn is it’s a family. People do a great job here at mak-ing you feel welcome. I’m just thank-ful for the University for giving me the opportunity to coach here when they didn’t have to,” Robinson said after the finals against Texas Southern.

“When I first came to Alcorn, I saw its impressive vision for its basketball program,” said Robinson. “I couldn’t wait to start working with the players and help build a foundation of success.”

Though, improving Alcorn athletically was only half the battle.

If the Braves were going to go any further they first had to take care of issues off the court. Robinson took over for a program that was under NCAA sanctions for low Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores. The sanc-tions included a postseason ban.

Robinson took matters into his own hands by recruiting better students first-and-foremost. His recruiting classes average a 2.97 grade point aver-age.

“When I came in our team grade point average was at 2.0. We were able to raise it to a 2.5 after one year. I had six guys with a 3.0 or better and four who were All-SWAC academically,” Robinson said. “We just wanted to recruit better student-athletes.”

Robinson’s academic resurgence paid off as the NCAA saw noticeable improvement. If all stays the same by the end of the 2016-17 school year, Alcorn will have all of its sanctions removed moving forward.

“Due to the recent academic success of our athletic programs, no bans have been issued for subsequent years,” said Jason Cable, assistant vice president for athletic compliance and academic services. “Specifically, the hiring of a head coach committed to academics and the change in culture brought by his staff to the men’s basketball program exemplify and will continue to be the academic standard of excellence at Alcorn State University.”

After the 2015-16 season ended, Robinson revamped his coaching staff by bringing in three new assistants. They included the 2003-04 SWAC Newcomer of the Year and All-Conference First-Team honoree Delvin Thompson who played at Alcorn, Derek Thompson who has over 10 years of collegiate coaching experience and Frank Popieski who spent three years at Florida State before helping coach numerous All-Atlantic Sun performers at Stetson.

“I’m really thankful to have Delvin, Derek and Frank on my staff. They each brought their own dynamic to the team and they all had a lot of energy that our guys were able feed off of,” said Robinson. “In order to have cham-pionship teams you have to have a championship staff. I needed to bring in guys that would go to work for us and elevate us to the very top of the standings.”

Moving forward, Alcorn will continue its strive to be the top program in the league both athletically and academically.

“We want to not only win championships, but also have all of our student-athletes earn degrees when it’s all said and done,” Robinson said.

In 2017-18, the Braves will return two of their top three leading scorers in Johnson and junior A.J. Mosby who both averaged in double-figures. Alcorn has also signed a pair of newcomers to its roster already. In Alcorn’s Last Outing...Alcorn’s Phenomenal 2016-17 Season Ends at Finals of SWAC Championships

HOUSTON – It may not have ended the way the Alcorn State University men’s basketball program wanted, but the Braves laid it all on the court in a defensive 53-50 battle against Texas Southern in the finals of the SWAC Championships on Saturday at the Toyota Center. The second-seeded Braves ended the year 18-14 overall after going 13-5 in the SWAC. The 18 wins were the most since 2001-02. The Braves trailed by five with 30 seconds left. Freshman Maurice Howard was fouled after he drove to the bucket and nailed a pair of free throws to make it a one possession game. Alcorn was able to get a tie-up in the back-court defensively and had the possession arrow with 11 seconds remaining. The Braves were able to get off a three-point attempt but it hit the front of the rim. Alcorn was led by junior Reginal Johnson who finished with 16 points and six rebounds. He was joined in double-figures by senior Denzel Dulin who recorded 12 points and five rebounds. After the game, Johnson was named to the SWAC All-Tournament Team. It came after he was selected to the All-Conference Second-Team. ABOUT ALCORN STATE UNIVERSITYAlcorn is the oldest public historically black land-grant institu-tion in the United States and the second-oldest state-supported institution of higher learning in Mississippi. Alcorn University was founded in 1871 as a result of the people of Mississippi’s efforts to educate the descendants of formerly enslaved Africans. It was named in honor of the sitting governor of Mississippi, James L. Alcorn.

Alcorn is situated in Claiborne County, seven miles west of Lorman, 80 miles south of the capital city of Jackson, 45 miles south of Vicksburg, and 40 miles north of Natchez. The site was originally occupied by Oakland College, a school established by Presby-terians in 1828; the state of Mississippi purchased the Oakland campus for $40,000 and named it Alcorn University. Hiram R. Revels resigned his seat as a United States senator to become the University’s first president. The state legislature provided $50,000 cash annually for the University’s first 10 years to support its estab-lishment and overall operation. Additionally, 30 acres of land were sold for $188,928; Alcorn received three-fifths of the proceeds, or $113,400. This funding was used for Alcorn’s agricultural and mechanical components.

Initially, the institution’s three major study components were the four-year college track, the two-year college track, and the three-year graded track. Students spent the morning, from seven o’clock until noon, in classes. In the afternoon, they worked in various University shops for eight cents per hour. Room and board, includ-ing laundry, cost about $5 a month.

In 1878, Alcorn University became Alcorn Agricultural and Me-chanical College. The college was exclusively for males at first, but eventually women were admitted. A dormitory for women was built in 1902. Over time, facilities increased from three historic buildings to more than 80 structures. The original purchase of 225 acres of land grew to a campus of more than 1,700 acres.

In 1974, Alcorn Agricultural and Mechanical College became Alcorn State University. Governor William L. Waller signed House Bill 298, granting this status. Alcorn has thrived by continuously accomplishing dynamic goals and objectives despite limited resource allocations from the state. By the early 1990s, Alcorn’s

physical plant and academic programs evolved into a more diversified Univer-sity. The student population is now representative of more than 65 coun-ties, more than 30 states, and at least 18 foreign countries. The University pro-vides an undergrad-uate education that enables students to successfully pursue work in graduate and professional schools, engage in teaching, and enter other professions.

As Mississippi recognized the importance of educating all citizens, Alcorn has gained status and importance. From the original eight faculty members in 1871, the University has grown to more than 800 faculty and staff. The student body has increased from 179 students to more than 4,000 students with varied ethnic back-grounds. Although early graduates of Alcorn had limited horizons, today’s graduates are successful in their chosen professions, and many are outstanding entrepreneurs. Throughout Alcorn’s history, the leadership and faculty remained committed to enhancing the institution’s image and to attracting young people whose interest is the pursuit and receipt of a quality education. Over the decades, “the college that excelled against great odds” has become one of the leading universities in the nation. Alcorn State University oper-ates divisions with degree programs in more than 50 areas, includ-ing the bachelor’s, master’s, and educational specialist degrees.

The collaborative strength and contributions of Alcorn’s past 18 presidents during its more than 140 years of existence have enabled the institution to excel. On March 4, 2014, the Mississippi Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning voted unanimously to appoint Dr. Alfred Rankins Jr. as Alcorn State Uni-versity’s 19th president. President Rankins' background and vision are strategically aligned with Alcorn’s history and tradition. He is poised to expeditiously move Alcorn State University to the next level of excellence.
