From Principal Albright

Happy New Year!

This issue of the ADCA Newsletter comes at a time of great excitement at

Alice Deal Middle School. Our building has greatly expanded into new and

renovated spaces, students are having a great time in our many clubs, sports, and

activities, and everyone feels refreshed and ready for the second half of our school

year. I hope to see many of you at ADCA meetings, at our annual (and annually

fun) Deal Auction in February, or at any of the student performances we will be

hosting in the near future.

Reno Wing Open House

The new wing has 15 classrooms, a couple of offices, an art space, and a multi-purpose room. The wing is

made up of the historic Reno School (1903, National Register) and the not-so-historic building between Reno

and the gym area of Deal (2015).

The Reno wing is integrated completely into the original Deal building; there are no exterior walkways needed

to get to those classes. In a few years, the space will seem seamlessly part of Deal.

Teachers are aware that it is a long way to get to the classes in the Reno wing. We need to see how students

move among the Deal spaces to see how we can ensure that everyone gets to class on time. For now, we will

encourage students to move quickly (but with purpose) and be forgiving as we work out the traffic patterns.

The new wing is quite beautiful; the Reno building space is even more breathtaking than I had hoped. All

exterior work, however, still continues as a muddy mess; new plantings will be put in during the late

winter/early spring.

Students will not enter or exit the Reno wing through exterior doors; they will continue to enter and exit where

they have normally exited.

Students have already moved their books into their new lockers; teachers' classrooms are already set up.

Bathrooms have been stocked.

There will be several historic displays authored by the Tenleytown Historical Society placed at critical

locations in the Reno Wing. We will endeavor to integrate these into our curriculum (although DCPS middle

school curricula don't necessarily cover school segregation nor the development of the Reno City area

following the Civil War).

An elevator is still to be put in place. This will take some time over the next couple of months. Until then, no

students with mobility needs will be required to go into the Reno Building. We will work as quickly as

possible with the construction company and the elevator company to have the elevator in place as early as we

are able.

There will be an open house to see the new space on Thursday, January 29, from 6:30 - 8:00pm. While the

Reno wing isn't a closed space before that, the open house should give us a chance to see it when it has had a

few weeks to work out its kinks!

Hello Alice Deal Community and

Happy New Year!

Welcome to the

second half of the

2014-2015 Alice

Deal Middle

School Year! I am

excited that we are

cruising along and

achieving all of

our goals thus far! We kicked off the school year

with family contributions nearly exceeding 50% of

the total budgeted amount. To date, we have

achieved 93% or $74,226 of the $80,000 family

contribution budgeted total. If you have not done

already, please contribute to your school. We want

to reach our goal of 100% of Deal families

contributing to the pot. Please consider having

your employer match your contribution!

In October, we partnered with the Deal Counseling

Team with Erica Woods, Vice President of

Speakers and delivered a successful High School

Night with over 200 students and parents in

attendance, checking out DCPS High Schools.

Our Speaker Series, Parenting for Prevention has

showcased these two sessions so far: Talking to

Your Child about Drugs, and Alcohol, Human

Trafficking, and Teen Dating Relationships. This

series continues to expose and educate our parents

giving them crucial data and information necessary

for successful parenting! Stay tuned for our third

topic at the next ADCA General Meeting,

Wednesday, March 11, 2015, 6:30 to 8:00 P.M.

November was quite a blast with Camille Martone

and Jennie Bonney planning a successful Book Fair

at Politics and Prose on November 1st and 2nd. We

closed out the month with our Annual International

Night. This event underlined the diverse Alice

Deal community and featured a buffet of the

special culinary dishes of the Deal culture. Thank

you to the Co-Chairs, Silvia Dinale and Neha Shah

for their excellent leadership!

We continue to celebrate our teachers and staff

with a year long Teachers Appreciation. We

planned a Winter Holiday Hot Breakfast on

December 15, 2014. Each teacher and staff

member was given a gift card to be spent at anyone

of our neighborhood commercial restaurants-

Starbucks, Panera Bread, Nanos Peri Peri and

Chipotle.

Our Holiday Greens Fundraising continues to be a

winner with Jonathan McHugh leading this

fundraiser. Thank you for purchasing your trees

and wreaths from us!

Finally, our biggest fundraiser of the year, the

Auction/Party 2015 is coming up very soon. Our

budgeted goal is to make $55,000. Don’t miss the

event of the school year, Saturday, February 7,

2015, 6:30 P.M. to 11:00 P.M. Register to win

tickets to the Maroon 5 Concert and the Special

Meet and Greet the Band at the Auction/Party

2015. Please make a donation or become a sponsor

at alicedeal.org. Purchase your tickets for $35.00

TODAY!

On behalf of the Alice Deal Community

Association, we THANK YOU for all of your

support in helping us accomplish the above

activities and fundraisers! Your continued Support

Means A Great DEAL!

It’s Auction Time!

Please consider giving back to Alice Deal by

donating to this year’s school auction on February

7th. Money raised at the auction will be used to

support community service, to fund the arts, music

activities, and athletics programs, and to continue

to assist teacher training.

There are many ways for you to give:

Donate tickets to sporting, theater, and music

events. These items always go first!

Consider donating a getaway. Everyone needs

a vacation.

Are you famous or do you know anybody

famous? Autographed books, photos, swag or

even better a meet and greet are amazing

items.

Throw a party! Grab some friends and

organize a Deal Parent Sign Up Party.

Can you cook? You could donate a Dessert of

the Month item, Mexican Dinner for Four, or

even organize a Meal a Week with some

friends!

Do you like to primp? When you go in for a

service, ask your hairdresser, masseuse, nail

salon, or favorite spa to donate a gift

certificate.

Finally, as you are dining out ask store owners if

they would consider donating a gift certificate. It is

that easy. People love to give to a great local public

school like Alice Deal!

National History Day, a Big “Deal” for 8th

Graders.

National History Day (NHD) is a program that

encourages students to do research on a self-

selected topic, tied to a theme chosen by NHD.

Students may work individually or in groups. They

have five ways to choose from in order to present

their research: website, research paper,

performance, exhibit, or documentary. This year's

theme is "Leadership and Legacy in History."

Students may choose topics that have a family

connection, are local leaders, or are national or

international leaders. Students must do more than

present a biography of the person; they must

demonstrate through their research the legacy the

individual left in history. Leadership isn't always

embodied in a person; it can take the form of an

organization as well. Some of this year's 8th grade

topics include: Eleanor Roosevelt and the

Declaration of Human Rights, Frank Lloyd Wright

and architecture, and Montezuma and the Aztecs.

At Deal, NHD is a required 8th grade project;

however, our students who do a great job will

participate in the competition side of NHD. After

the classroom level, students from all four teams

will be judged together and the top projects in each

category will move on to the city-wide competition

held at the National Archives in the spring. At the

city-wide competition, two projects in each

category will advance to the national competition

at the University of Maryland in June, where the

projects will compete against projects from around

the country and partner schools abroad.

Historically, Deal students have had a strong

showing at all levels and even have placed

nationally. For more information, please

visit www.nhd.org.

MineCraft Period 8:

This Period 8 course is held after school and is for

all those MineCraft fans out there!

Ion Donlan is the teacher for this extra class

selection. Students who have wondered how such

famous structures as the Taj Mahal or the Empire

State Building were constructed in MineCraft

would probably enjoy this class. This period 8

offering is an opportunity to learn about the basic

principles behind architectural design and how it

can be applied towards MineCraft. Participants will

ponder:

What makes a sound structure?

How do I create my own architectural

theme or design? and

How does the landscape affect a structure?

By studying the architectural design process, the

answers to these questions will become clear.

Specific focus will be placed upon the study of

size, scale, and detail and how it connects to real-

life and virtual structures.

Mr. Donlan decided to create MineCraft Period 8

because he is extremely passionate about engaging

students with technology in the classroom. He

already runs a weekly MineCraft after-school club

each week at Deal. A Period 8 class is a way to

apply this idea academically. “MineCraft can be an

engaging tool for students because it teaches such

important skills as peer collaboration, product

design, and the value in problem solving” says Mr.

Donlan.

In Ian Donlan’s words: “ I am a 7th grade Special

Education teacher at Deal MS. It is my second

year. I hold a Masters degree in Special Education

from Manhattanville College in Purchase, NY. I

am also a 2008 Teach For America Corps Member

alumnus. I taught 7th Grade English Language Arts

in Prince George’s County from 2008 to 2010.

Prior to teaching, I worked as a computer art

assistant for a business publication in New York

City for several years while attending George

Washington University”.

GeoPlunge Challenge Tournament

"Always guess Alabama!" "Can Arizona beat

Rhode Island in population?" "Should we drop the

power?" are only some of the phrases you would

have heard on Thursday, December 12 as the Deal

GeoPlunge Team defended their first place cup for

the third year in a row! Students in grades 6-8 have

been working hard all year long during their recess

periods to study their U.S. Geography facts and

practice strategy for the game. Game play consists

of three rounds where teams of three face one

another and use cards to score points by

identifying, matching, and analyzing certain

geographic data. The game deck consists of 50

cards - one for each of the 50 states - with

information including time zone, capital city, and

rankings for population, size, and statehood. All

students are welcome to this friendly, but

competitive, club next semester as we prepare for

the Spring Tournament!

8th Grade Mock Hearings on the Constitution

Every year, the 8th grade stages mock hearings on

issues on the Constitution. This is a national

program in which many public schools participate.

The winners of each issue on each team will go on

to compete school-wide and then those winners

will compete city-wide, etc.

Students work in groups with anywhere from 3-6

in a group and they prepare a written essay to be

presented to the class and to judges. The judges

are parents and student teachers. I, your newsletter

editor, had the pleasure of serving as a judge for

one of the 8th grade teams. Issues studied included:

first amendment rights, Articles of Confederation,

different historical issues leading up to the writing

of the Constitution, international affairs, and

political parties. Judges ask questions of the

students to test their knowledge and poise. This is

a wonderful learning experience for the students,

especially since we live in the capitol city.

The following are some pictures from this

worthwhile event:

Viking Time: Humans of Alice Deal (HAD)

Deal has countless clubs and activities in which

students can participate. One of the more unusual

Viking Times’ activities is Humans of Alice Deal.

This group is for students who admire the

website/facebook page Humans of New York.

HNY is a series of pictures and stories about and of

random people in New York. So now Deal has

Humans of Alice Deal. This Viking Time,

comprised of 17 members, shares the stories of

those in our school community--students, teachers,

staff, and administrators. The following is the link

Teacher in the Spotlight-

Emily Farrar, 8th Grade Math

Emily Farrar grew up

outside of Seattle

(Bainbridge Island,

WA) and was

extremely athletic

in school. She

participated in

cross country and

track as well as

basketball all

through high school,

and continued with cross

country and track for 4 years at

Washington State University.

Ms. Farrar moved to DC after graduating from

college. She tried a variety of different jobs-

marketing coordinator for an engineering firm,

specialty running store shoe salesperson, and

Nordstrom salesperson-while coaching HS track at

Washington Lee in Arlington, VA. She realized,

during that time, that what she really wanted to do

was be a teacher. Ms. Farrar was accepted by

several alternative teacher programs (Teach for

America, DC Teaching Fellows, Capitol Teaching

Residency) but chose DC Teaching Fellows

because of the desire to stay in DC. She taught

Algebra & Math Concepts for one year at a charter

school in the Parkside/Kenilworth neighborhood of

NE DC, before arriving at DCPS and Deal.

Farrar says: “I chose to come to Deal because of its

reputation and resources, and because I was

starting my master's degree in Curriculum &

Instruction at American University. My classes are

right across the park at Wilson High School two

days a week.”

“I got married in August in Seattle, and have a

chocolate lab named Bailey. I enjoy cooking,

yoga, running and college football. I am a HUGE

Seahawks fan, and also love to watch golf (my

husband played college golf and is an avid golfer

and football fan as well).” In Emily Farrar’s

words!

Holiday Greens Sale

Every year, the ADCA holds a holiday green sale.

Jonathan McHugh headed up this successful event

this year. He reported that “we sold about 270

trees, 140 wreaths and about 300 feet of garland.

We also had over 50 people volunteer to help with

the sale including that first weekend with the

torrential rain. As result of all these efforts, the

ADCA netted about ten thousand dollars!!!!

Thank you to the Deal community for such a

successful fundraiser!”

2014 Deal Book Fair at Politics and Prose

Every year, the ADCA has a book fair at Politics

and Prose. This year this event was co-chaired by

Camille Martone and Jennie Bonnie. People buy

books and Deal gets a percentage. Here are some

highlights from the 2014 Deal Book Fair:

161 supporters of Deal purchased books at the

Deal Book Fair (Nov 1st and 2nd);

Total sales were $8,740;

Deal's 20% share was $1,748;

These proceeds benefit the Deal library;

Approximately 80 books were purchased and

given directly to the library (Deal librarians put

together a wish list prior to the Fair); and

24 volunteers from Deal families worked at the

Fair.

International Night, a Smashing Success!

Alice Deal’s International Night held on November

19th, 2014 was a wonderful community event.

South African boot dancing

More than 500 members of the Deal community

enjoyed delicious food from around the world and

entertainment provided by our very own students -

South African boot dancing, the String Ensemble,

and African drummers club. A long list of

volunteers contributed to make this a successful

event – those bringing in a dish to share,

coordinating food tables, organizing the raffle give-

aways, hosting the international trips table, setting

up the decorations, helping with clean up and much

more. In addition, over 1,000 recycled plastic cups

at our water station were used - Daniel Solomon set

this up as a way to reduce waste and avoid using

hundreds of small plastic bottles.

The ADCA collected over $4,000 in donations

from our community to be used for 8th grade

international travel scholarships. It was a

spectacular evening that showed the strong spirit of

sharing and the rich diversity that exists in our Deal

community. Thank you to all of you who came out

to show your support!
