Well, if youre a regular reader of The All-Around, and holding it in yourhands, to announce a change in the format ispointing out the obvious. I have to say, first off, thechange from a tabloid style to a magazine style ispretty exciting for all of us. Since Im actuallywriting this before I get to hold the new format inmy hand, I have to admit there are mixed feelingsof both exciting anticipation and nostalgia.

Having produced volumes and volumes in thetabloid format, its a little strange to think that Imnever going to see those pallets of tightly packedbundles of ragged-edged newspapers, waiting to beloaded from the bay doors of the printingwarehouse, still glowing with the smell of dryingink. Ill miss it a little bit.

Still, change for the sake of change is not alogical approach as I see it, so the question is, why?The short answer is that its simply time. The longerversion is that the change to a new format, solvessome problems inherent with a three-sectiontabloid, but more importantly allows for theimplementation of some new and more progressivefeatures that are in the works.

Hopefully, forever gone are the days of missingsections. Not to kick our good friends at the postoffice when theyre down, but its been a problemsince the beginning, and as time has movedforward, its only gotten worse. Ill not say anymoreout of fear that they wont be delivered at all, butIve often wondered where all those missing

sections have ended up over the years. Does thepost office have a place where they keep them, ordo they simply just vanishkinda like all thosesingle socks that have mysteriously disappearedover the years?... guess well never know.

Of course theres an upside to the format changeas well. While Im not going to open up the wholecan of beans at this time, readers can be on thelookout for future enhancements that will coincidewith a format change. And when I sayenhancements Im talking about real andapplicable upgrades that will take The All-Aroundto a new level with regard to serving the needs ofits readers, particularly those who use thispublication as a tool for competing.

Like just about all publications these days, TheAll-Around has, for some time, featured an onlineversion (wspubs.com/AllAround). Thats all fineand good, but not really anything earthshaking.What we have in store for the future however, reallyis. Both event producers as well as competitors willbe able to utilize the information in The All-Around,both print and online versions to more effectivelyand efficiently link the two togetheroh, and bythe wayat no cost.

Like I mentioned, change for the sake of sayingyou changed something is worthless, but change forthe sake of further promoting the sport by way ofenhancing participation will result in really makinga difference.

With that, I, along with everyone here atWestern Sports Publishing, present to you, The All-Around hope you enjoy it.

Team roping in the winter in Arizonais a big deal. Ropers and horseenthusiasts from all over converge on thestate and the Greater Phoenix area to baskin the warm sunshine and enjoy thefellowship of friends and other ropers. TheUSTRC rolled into town for the Lasso DelSol at the Westworld Equestrian Center inScottsdale, Arizona. The event took placeDecember 29-31, 2011 and was theperfect event to end 2011 and start the2012 team roping season.

The team roping action began with theOpen Division. Erich Rogers from RoundRock, Arizona and Brady Minor fromEllensburg, Washington won the ropingby almost a full second. They were 35.10seconds on five steers and finished infront of Matt Sherwood and Cory Petska.Rogers and Minor won $7,500, trophyGist spurs, and points for the Priefert USOpen Tour. Third place was Bobby Moteand Byron Wilkerson. The winners of theIncentive were Taylor Winn fromAnnabella, Utah and Quinn Kesler fromHolden, Utah.

The winners of the #15 were fromHays, Montana and Surprise, Arizona.Edward Hawley and Jordan Olson teamedup for first place with a time of 34.32

seconds on five steers. Fortheir efforts they won$7,500, trophy Gist spursand $6,000 in USTRCFlex Earnings. Secondplace in the Average wasKory Bramwell fromChromo, Colorado andCole Jackson fromAnimas, New Mexico.California took third placein the Average as LaneKarney and Jordan Ketscher caught fivesteers in 35.69 seconds.

Oregon and Idaho won the Average ofthe #13 Division. Garrett Rogers fromAdams, Oregon and Dace Woods fromGrangeville, Idaho roped five steers in36.10 seconds and earned $8,868, trophyGist spurs and $6,000 in USTRC FlexEarnings. Second place was CodyDavenport and R.T. Heredia and thirdplace went to Kyle Conway and ClydeGasser all from Arizona.

Cadee Tew from Weatherford, Texasand Tanner Baldwin from Vail, Arizonawere the champions of the #12 Division.They were 30.90 seconds on four steersand filled their pockets with $7,500 incash. They also won trophy Martin saddlesand $6,000 in USTRC Flex Earnings.Second place went to Quinn Kesler andRoper Kiesner and the third place

finishers were Cody Davenportand Jigger McKinley. DexterUdall and Denton Payne bothfrom Queen Creek, Arizonawon the Incentive Average.

Ferlin Chaley, the reining2011 #12 Gold Plus Shoot-Out Champion at the 2011Cinch USTRC National Finalsof Team Roping struck again.He teamed up with headerGary Kiehne and the duo wonthe Average of the Gold PlusDivision. They were 35.64seconds on four steers andreceived trophy Gist buckles,$7,500, and $6,000 in USTRCFlex Earnings. Second placewas Carl Lufkin and Jake

Howe and third was Ray Siggins andPaul Freed. Shane Thomson and BillPorter were the Incentive champions andCarl Lufkin and Darrel Sewell won theCentury Bonus.

Trevor Nowlin and Seth Kent bothfrom Casa Grande, Arizona were thesuperstars of the #11 Division. They wonthe Average and the Incentive Average.The took home $8,500, trophy Martinsaddles, trophy Gist buckles and $8,000in USTRC Flex Earnings. Second placewent to John Arviso and Wasey Carvisofrom Ft. Wingate, New Mexico. The thirdplace team was Ranger and Skeeter Hill.

The final roping of the second day ofthe Lasso Del Sol was the #10 Division.The winners of the roping were DennisNowlin and Clancy Wilkerson. They alsowon the Incentive Average. The win paidthem $8,706, trophy Martin saddles,trophy Gist buckles and $8,000 inUSTRC Flex Earnings. Second place wasLevi Gallego and Jose Zambrano andthird place was Diego Suarez andSalvador Flores.

The #9 Division was all about theteam of Marco Perricone from Yuma,Arizona and Sy Cluff from Taylor,Arizona. They won the Average and theIncentive Average. They were 36.04seconds on four steers and secured$8,500, trophy Martin saddles and $8,000in USTRC Flex Earnings. Second placewas the husband and wife team of Janetand Pete Mickelson from Flagstaff,Arizona. Third place went to MarkWright and Ben South.

The final roping of the weekend wasthe #8 Pick/Draw. Delbert Francisco and

Glory Back in the MoneyThe Pro-Am was truly one of the

toughest World Series Ropings of theyear with an 80% catch ratio and onlyfour seconds separating 44th call fromhigh team back. The top team to theshort round, Tyson Campidilli of Vinita,Oklahoma and Cody Brown ofOolagah, Oklahoma , had to be 8.60 tomaintain their number one spot. Afterthe dust settled and the final flagdropped, a time of 7.91 put thecapstone on a $200,000 payday for theOklahoma team. Tyson has beenwinning a lot in this past year, as heplaced a couple of times at the USTRCFinals. Tyson is a switch hitter and isequally comfortable heading asheeling. When we caught up with himfollowing the roping, he was laughingabout the fortunes of team roping, Iwas king of the mountain onWednesday, and on Thursday missedthree heel shots in the #11.

Cody Brown, a saddle maker,celebrated his one year weddinganniversary in Vegas two days beforehis big win. He brought his owncheering squad to Vegas with him andsaid, that scream was my mom. Codyconfessed that he had second thoughtsabout the big entry fees, but his friendsLarmon and Amos, the team that wonthe #13 the previous year had, assuredme that this would be a roping contestand not a drawing contest, and theywere right. He also had a secretweapon. He borrowed Clint Peverleyssuper horse Glory that placed in thetop five of every roping event at theAQHA world show, and with this winthe horse had over $175,000 won onhim this year.

James Gililland of Belen, NM and Cody Wilson from Capitan, NMstepped up their game in the shortround and stopped the clock in a 7.62 to secure them the reservechampionship and $140,000 in team earnings.

calf sled can be pulled behind a 4 wheeler or any type of pulling unit. You get the same practiceas with live calves but not the livestock up-keep and cost. The roping will remain a sixhead average, with five full go rounds,and the top 20 teams will compete inthe short round. One outstanding deal

for Open ropers that will change is thatthe Priefert US Open at the CinchNational Finals of Team Roping will bea 100% payback roping. That is right,100% of the money will be paid back inthe US Open, so ropers will be ropingfor all of their money with nothingcoming out for the stock or production.The USTRC will also pay for the entireprizeline, so it will essentially be morethan 100% coming back to the ropers.This is really exciting and I am glad

the USTRC is doing something likethis, said 2011 PRCA World ChampionHeader Turtle Powell. I like theincrease in fees and taking thequalification out of entering. Sometimeswe just cannot get to enough ropings,but the US Open is certainly a ropingthat an Open roper wants to enter.The USTRC and Priefert will also

keep the Priefert US Open Tour in placeas well. Points will be available only toteams that qualify to the short rounds ofthe listed qualifying ropings and will beawarded through tenth place. Thesepoints will only be available to headerswith a TRIAD Classification of #7 andabove and to heelers with a TRIADClassification of #8 and above. Theseven USTRC Regional Finals and theNational Finals Preliminary will countfor double the points and the Priefert USOpen will count triple the points.I also like the fact that the USTRC

is keeping the tour in place, addedPowell. It is great for Open ropers that dont rodeo full time and it is great for those that choose to chase it. Ireally think this is a win-win situationfor everyone.The year end bonus of $10,000 to the

Regarded as the toughest four-eventcowboy around, 1946 worldchampion team roper Chuck Sheppardwas one of the old-time greats. He carriedCowboy Turtles Association (CTA) #68 -a number held the rest of his life. Ofcourse, CTA eventually became known as the Professional Rodeo CowboyAssociation (PRCA). He also won aworld championship in calf roping during1951 in the International RodeoAssociation and twice finished up as thereserve all around champion.He competed in every event in rodeo

at one time or another, but calf roping,team roping, bulldogging and saddlebronc riding were his main events. Thecalf roping and bronc riding events were where he thrived in the early days.In an interview, Chuck once said, I onlyquit riding bulls and bareback cause Id get sored up and it made my otherwork tough.Along with working every event,

Chuck also judged rodeos for over 25years. One year, at Cheyenne, he enteredthe steer wrestling and steer roping eventsand judged the others! Amazing! He wasalso honored to flag the team roping atthe National Finals Rodeo (NFR) and thesteer roping at the National Finals SteerRoping (NFSR).Chuck was inducted into the National


Cowboy and Western Heritage MuseumHall of Fame in 1985, the ProRodeo Hallof Fame in 2000, the Phippen MuseumsArizona Ranchers & Cowboy Hall ofFame in 2008 and was awarded the BenJohnson award for rodeo excellence in2001. First and foremost however, ChuckSheppard was a cowboy and a good-natured one at that!Born on a ranch near Globe, Arizona

in 1916, he was a cowboy from the wordgo. Chucks parents had traveled fromTexas in a wagon. They set up their ownranch on Mescal Creek southeast ofGlobe in the Pinal Mountains, an area so rough and remote, the only way in orout, with or without supplies, was to pack in by horse or mule. Good cow dogs are more practical than a fence inthat country.His dad, Horace (a.k.a. Shep), thought

nothing about putting Chuck on a horse ata very young age. He expected his son tokeep up. By the age of nine, he wasriding the rough string horses to gentlethem down for his little brother andmother to ride. He learned to catch andlead wild cattle as a mere boy. By thetime he was a teenager, he was one tough cowboy, able to do things withhorses and cattle even some seasonedhands are unable to do.Younger brother, Lynn Sheppard, once

wrote, Dad and Chuck roped the wildcattle on broncs and tied them to trees.

They were led out the next day... the PinalMountains were covered with brushdogs were a necessity.During the dirty 30s, at 16 years of

age, Chuck moved to California to bewith his mother, hoping to find workthere. What he did find was an event thatchanged his life forever he entered arodeo at Hayfork, California. Chuck oncesaid, I won some money, had fun doingit and I think thats what amazed me somuch. For the next 25 plus yearsSheppards life revolved around rodeo. Hebecame known as Mr. Everything.As a testament to his all-around

abilities, he won numerous titles at bothends of the arena. Denver, Los Angeles,Phoenix, Pendleton in calf roping andSalinas, Tucson, Chicago, Los Angeles inbronc riding and all-around titles atDenver, Tucson, Prescott, Lewiston andBoise to name a few. But winning titleswas not first in Chucks book puttingfood on the table was. He rodeod becauseit was a way to make a living.Chucks youngest daughter, Lynda,

once said, Rodeo wasnt like it is now.Back then wed get out of school and begone all summer. Youd stay eight or 10days in Salinas, drive all night to get toCheyenne and stay in someones home.They did not have hotels (or livingquarter trailers) like they do now, they alldid it - it was about survival. Theyworked hard back then.

I rode bucking horses for 24 years,Chuck said. You can tell that by looking at me. I rode some of the bestthere ever was and got bucked off someof the sorriest. Chuck also spent 10 years as a board

member of the Rodeo CowboysAssociation (RCA), which is what theassociation was known as between theCTA and PRCA. During that time, he iscredited for coming up with the design onthe world-champion saddles, among manyother accomplishments.In about 1951, the Sheppard family

moved from California to Arizona where Chuck spent the rest of his life. In59 he retired from full-time rodeo,although he made the NFR in teamroping during 1963 while only competingpart time. He used to say, with a smile,When I was rodeoing, I always atechickennot superstitious, its just whenI did good, I ate the meat, when I did bad,I ate the feathers! During the late 1950s he went to work

for historic K4 ranch near Prescott,Arizona. He worked there until he finallyretired at 82 years of age, but hed stayed

so long he was just like family... he never really retired. As a matter of fact,he did become family - his youngestdaughter, Lynda, married John Kieckhefer (grandson of Bob Kieckheferwho started the ranch) and they residethere to this day - amongst others of theKieckhefer clan. K4 ranch owner, John Kieckhefer and

Chuck were instrumental in the purchaseof the great stud Driftwood Ike in 1963from Roy Wales. He stood at stud therefor 17 years. This was a big influence intaking the breeding program at the ranchto a new level. Sheppard was in charge ofthe breeding program as well as the largecattle herd for the ranch. Chuck partneredwith John on many horses and ran acouple hundred head of cows, owned withwife, Gwen, on leased ground around thePrescott area as well.Along the way, and as a method to

show their remuda, Chuck got intoshowing and racing horses. He did verywell in the show ring and showed justabout all classes including halter, cuttingand reining. He found great excitement inhorse racing and, just as with rodeo,

Chuck found success on the track. I gotto running horses just for fun and thenone summer I won 13 races over atPrescott Downs. One of his horsesnamed Ant Hill won 15 races in a year.Chuck wound up winning many stakesraces over the years.He was one of those all-time great

cowboys who excelled at just abouteverything he did. Grandson, RickKieckhefer, said, If you didnt learnsomething from him (Chuck), you werentlistening very good. He would help outanybody as long as they had a little try.He was just as proud as he could be ofpeople when they did well. He was agreat guy to have in your corner whetheryou were related to him or not. Every day Chuck Sheppard woke up, he

loved what he did, he was fun to be around,always upbeat and he had a whimsicalsaying for just about everything.Grandson, Charlie Lewis, told a story

on Chuck. We were going into a bigpasture in search of some remnant cows, Iwas probably about 18 or 19. Granddadgave me instructions to make a circle; boy

it was a hot day, about 105. When I got back to the truck,probably an hour and a half later, he was nowhere in sight. Iloped up to the top of a hill about half a mile distant to scan thecountry for him; a little worried about him to be honesthe waspretty old then. When I got to the top of the hill, there he was,asleep under a tree with his horse unsaddled. I noticed rightaway the horse was not sweaty; he had probably ridden straightfrom the truck to the tree to take a nap! When I woke him up, hesaid with a grin, Horse got hot, needed to cool him off!

Chuck was very fond of his family. He and wife Gwen hadtwo daughters, Stella and Lynda and a whole herd ofgrandchildren, many of whom are well known in rodeo/cowboycircles to this day. Not long after passing on to the next realm in2005, some of the grandchildren helped organize the ChuckSheppard Memorial Roping, which raises money for the Chuckand Gwen Sheppard memorial scholarship fund. The scholarshipis given to students who are enrolled full-time at YavapaiCollege and seek a degree in agricultural or equine studiesprograms and are involved in organizations such as FFA, 4-H,Arizona High School Rodeo Association and Arizona JuniorRodeo Association. The event will enjoy its sixth year in 2012.

During an interview prior to being inducted into theCowboy Hall of Fame Chuck said, Weve had an exciting life started out with nothing so there was nowhere to go but up

The turn of the Year and the cold daysof Spring means one thing for roughstock riders. Casper Baca and the BacaRodeo Company is out and about withsome great events. The Bares Broncs andBulls Spectacular kicked things off onceagain in Farmington, New Mexico as ishas for the past 16 years. This event hasbeen the showcase of the Baca RodeoCompany for all of those years and anawesome way for bronc and bull ridersfrom all across the country to keep thedust off their gear during the colderwinter months.

The January 6-7 event at McGee Parkshowcased the talents of some of the bestin the business. Great rides, spectacularfeats and lots of payout money onceagain surrounded this event.
