If you’re reading the All Gold for the first time, you’re joining hundreds (in some cases thousands) of people who regularly download our magazine – we hope there is plenty of content to interest you and that you decide to join us on a regular basis.
This edition is timed to coincide with the All Golds’ home match against London Skolars. When we saw this fixture at the start of the season, we expected it to be the crucial game in the fight to get into the top eight of Kingstone Press League 1.
However, the teams haven’t performed according to the script – well our script at least – and Skolars have raced ahead while the All Golds have been less consistent. Congratulations to our friends from London, they are enjoying well- deserved success on the pitch and are doing great work in the community, too.
Rugby league continues to develop in
the capital, despite many challenges over the years, and it’s great to see things coming together for the Skolars. We hope they all enjoy an exciting and competitive game on Sunday.
For the All Golds, there have been some spectacular ups and downs this season. At times this has been frustrating for all concerned, but it’s also created some great entertainment and some really exciting matches.
This Sunday sees our first ever Family Day at the Prince of Wales Stadium and we hope first-time visitors really enjoy the atmosphere and get to sample some great rugby league. Whether it’s a home win or another ride on the rollercoaster, we’re convinced
that our new
fans will fall for the tremendous sport of gladiators.
Off the field on Sunday, we’re not able to afford a real rollercoaster, but we do have fantastic Glow Sports, rugby league coaching from our excellent Sky Try team, face painting, competitions, half time challenges and the arrival of a very special individual. Albert the Golden Griffin, the new All Golds mascot, has arrived after a long and arduous trip from New Zealand. He’s looking forward to meeting you all.
Don’t worry, you won’t be able to miss him, and he’ll be telling his own story in the next few editions.
Enjoy the read and the game if you can get along! Thanks as ever for the hard work of our editor Chris Wilson, regular contributors Lionel Hurst, Dan Garbutt. Lewis Mitchell and Patrick Baines. The superb Craig Paul Design team have again done a brilliant job – well done everyone, we’re looking forward to the next edition already!
WELCOME TOTHE ALL GOLDWELCOME TO ANOTHER GREAT EDITION OF THE ALL GOLD. WE HOPE YOU’LL ENJOY SOME GREAT COVERAGE OF THE UNIVERSITY OF GLOUCESTERSHIRE ALL GOLDS, ALONGSIDE DISCUSSION AND DEBATE OVER A WIDE RANGE OF SPORTING ISSUES.

Mitchell Dent and Jack Uren have been in fine form for the All Golds who made a fast start to life in the ultra-competitive Conference League South (CLS) with impressive early season victories against last year’s
champions Nottingham Outlaws and the Welsh side Torfaen Tigers.
Dent first got a taste of rugby league whilst studying at South Gloucestershire and
Stroud College in Bristol. A powerful prop, he quickly became an important member of the All Golds set-up and hopes to make an impact on the professional game in years to come. “I was over the moon when I found out that I’d been selected to represent England Colleges. It was one of my goals to achieve this year. I’m really looking forward to it”, said Dent.
“I’ve really enjoyed playing with the All Golds. I’ve met some great lads there and I feel I’ve become a better player while I’ve been at the club. There’s a few people who have helped me throughout my career who I must thank - mum and dad for supporting me, taking me to games and having to deal with the bumps along the way. I’d also like to thank Alex Davidson, Tom James and Dan Garbutt for coaching me and also the support of the CLS lads on constantly helping me improve as a player.”
TWO MEMBERS OF THE NEWLY-FORMED ALL GOLDS ACADEMY TEAM HAVE BEEN REWARDED FOR THEIR EYE-CATCHING PERFORMANCES IN THE CONFERENCE LEAGUE SOUTH, GAINING SELECTION TO THE ENGLAND COLLEGES RUGBY LEAGUE SQUAD.

Uren has played in a number of positions for the CLS side but is happiest at hooker. Another Bristol native he came through the South Gloucestershire and Stroud College system after first getting involved in rugby league with the Bristol Sonics. “Being involved with the All Golds has helped me improve as a player. The Conference League South is a step up
from playing at college level and that has helped me get better. I really enjoy playing rugby league. The game is so fast-paced, you can’t take your mind off the game”, he said.
“I thank my parents and family for being so supportive when it comes to rugby because it’s nice to know they believe in what you’re doing. I’ve had great
coaches since playing rugby league with Nath Rainer at Sonics, Tom James and Dan Garbutt at SGS college, Alex Davidson at CLS and Lee Greenwood the All Golds head coach.”
England will have a training session at Loughborough College on Saturday 2 July under coaches James Massara (incidentally a former University of Gloucestershire student) and Jonny Tuson. They face their first game against Scotland two weeks later at Featherstone and, on the penultimate day of July, they face Wales back at Loughborough College.
THE 2016 ENGLAND COLLEGES SQUAD:
Harry Chapman (Loughborough College), Lee Registe, Zac Hartley, Matty Ashton (all Hopwood Hall College), Jack Render, Alex Clegg, Tom Egan (all Pontefract New College), Dante Morley-Samuels (St John Rigby), Craig Banks (Tyne Met College), Ben Blakestone (Wakefield College), Michael Handol (Bradford College), Billy Bishop, Louis Townsend (both Runshaw College), Danny King (Huddersfield New College), Joe Hartley (Oldham), James Teixiera (Wigan Warriors EA), Jordan Cummins (Moulten College), Mitchell Dent, Jack Uren (both South Gloucestershire and Stroud College), Joslin Landu (Halifax ERA)

10Having won only two of their 12 league games, the All Golds head into Sunday’s game against seventh-placed Skolars as underdogs according to head coach Lee Greenwood. “They are having a great season compared to where they were last year,” he said of the Londoners.
“Since they lost to the amateur team Pilkington Recs in the Challenge Cup, Jermaine Coleman has managed to instil a winning culture and they look strong
across the field. Looking at the other fixtures, Skolars come to us knowing they must win to make top eight”, Greenwood added.
The All Golds’ coach went on to reflect on the 56-12 defeat at York last Sunday: “Last week was another huge disappointment. I thought we would go there with a young, hungry side and be competitive but it wasn’t to be.
“We were dominated and outclassed in every area of the game and not many of the lads gave a good account of themselves. York are a quality side at this level and were even stronger than when we’d played them previously. They have brought in top-end of Championship standard players recently and it showed.”
Looking ahead to Sunday’s game against Skolars Greenwood suggested he’d be picking a similar squad to the one that faced York. “It will probably be the same 17 that played last weekend. There will be late fitness tests for Lewis Reece, Joe McClean and Mick Govin who were all late withdrawals for that game. Harrison Elliott and Dale Cuniffe will definitely miss this week but might be back for the Oxford trip.”
At the start of the season both teams were hopeful of finishing inside the top eight but it has been the side from the capital that have upset some of the established Northern teams, giving themselves a huge shot at making the top eight.
Recent league wins against Keighley and Barrow have given Skolars breathing space

NO REPEAT FOR ALL GOLDS
ALL GOLDS 18 – 30 NORTH WALES CRUSADERSSunday 19 June, Prince of Wales Stadium
WRITTEN BY CHRIS WILSON
There was no repeat of the All Golds’ cup heroics against the
Crusaders at the PoW though the result was in doubt until Billy Brickhill snapped up a loose ball after Kieran Hyde’s hurried kick had been charged down and raced away to score with almost the last play of the game.
Up until then, neither side had shown the composure to take control of the game. The Crusaders recovered from an early Steve Parry try to lead 22-6 at the break and though the All Golds hit back with tries from Phil Cowburn and Parry’s
second close range touchdown in the space of five minutes early in the second period they just couldn’t get another score that would have heaped pressure on the Crusaders and given them a chance of victory.
Crusaders’ winger Scott Turner scored twice and set one up with a superb counterattack and inside kick on a free play to give his side what was ultimately a match-winning lead.

WHITE HOT YORK MELT ALL GOLDS
YORK CITY KNIGHTS56 – 12 ALL GOLDS Sunday 26 June, Bootham Crescent
WRITTEN BY CHRIS WILSON
There was plenty of confusion in the press box at Bootham Crescent last Sunday. The late withdrawals of Lewis Reece through illness and Joe McClean through injury meant a rapid reorganisation of the team in the minutes prior to the kick off and caused plenty of rewrites for the reporters present.

13It was hard to escape the conclusion that the changes were the reason for the All Golds’ disorganised start with York taking full advantage, scoring four tries in the opening 17 minutes. It should be said that York were good. Very good. Their play was sharp, swift and incisive with Harry Tyson-Wilson (whose brother had a brief loan spell with the All Golds, playing one game coincidentally against York)
helping himself to three tries and eight goals and precisely half of York’s 56-point total.
There were few bright points for the All Golds. Steve Parry was a danger from dummy half and he scored twice to become the All Golds’ leading tryscorer with 34. Phil Cowburn was coolness personified under the high ball while the pack put in a few good charges but were not really
consistent enough over the 80 minutes.

It is the third item that opens up the possibility of an annual fixture that I have personally sought for a long time and that
I find especially pleasing. I am alluding to new England coach Wayne Bennett’s recent visit from Australia during which he
stressed the importance of our nation having a Summer Test match in readiness for the 2017 World Cup.
UPDATE FROMTHE BIRTHPLACEOF INTERNATIONALRUGBY LEAGUETHREE PARTICULAR INTERNATIONAL ITEMS HAVE BEEN TO THE FORE RECENTLY. FIRSTLY UKRAINE DEFEATED THE CZECH REPUBLIC BEFORE A GOOD CROWD IN THE EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP THEN SPAIN ANNOUNCED THAT ITS WORLD CUP QUALIFIER AGAINST IRELAND WILL BE HOSTED IN VALENCIA THIS OCTOBER.

Therefore I very much hope this request will lead to an annual clash between France and England on July 14 – Bastille Day. The French player pool is at its strongest for half a century and there is no doubt a top Gallic XIII would fancy its chances against England.
Of course there can surely be only one venue: Paris. The French, and indeed the entire sport, would love to see something similar to 1954 when over 30,000 fans watched a superb inaugural Rugby League World Cup Final in Paris; Great Britain
triumphing over the hosts on that occasion.
The All Golds met a mighty York side last Sunday in one of the world’s most stunning and historic towns. If ever there is a city that should have a European Super League side it is York. They are on course and their clash in France this Saturday against Toulouse Olympique XIII should be something to behold. I forecast that both will be promoted to the Championship come season’s end.
In closing, I can confirm that the sport is looking at a number of ideas to secure
the upsurge in interest in it in Gloucestershire. Amongst structural plans envisaged with the Rugby Football League are the formation of a Gloucestershire County organisation or the creation of an independent charitable foundation or both.
It is essential that the whole is part of a well thought through and cohesive governance plan. Such a scheme in tandem with the announcement of the much anticipated new headquarters of the All Golds should finally see a dream come true: the establishment of this supreme sport in one of the nation’s great counties.

in the 1908 and Golden Fern Cups in May where the sportsmanship of its players across the age groups was recognised with the Lesley Vainikolo award.
The All Golds’ Sky Try and Community Manager, Dan Garbutt, was recognised for his outstanding contribution to schools rugby league over a number of years.
While at the Gloucestershire Warriors, Garbutt was the driving force behind the Gloucester Meteors teams that formed the nucleus of the All Golds initial Academy set-up in 2012. Several of that original Academy have gone on to earn first team contracts with the All Golds side.
The regional winners will receive two complimentary tickets to the Ladbrokes
Challenge Cup final, and VIP treatment at the Champion Schools Finals Day, which takes place on the Friday at Richmond Athletic Association, before the Wembley showpiece.
The RFL’s National Education Manager, Ebony Giblin, said: “The hard work and commitment of all the volunteers that make Schools Rugby League happen on a weekly basis during the academic year is vital in growing the game.
“I would like to congratulate this year’s ESRL Regional award winners and wish them luck as they progress to the National awards later on in the year.”
Stephen Guan, London and South East Education Officer, added: “To be able to include
the ESRL awards ceremony on Champion Schools National Finals Day gives us the opportunity to recognise these invaluable contributions to our game.
“It also allows the winners, who are usually hard at work during competition time, to sit back, enjoy some VIP treatment and watch some great games of Rugby League.”
In a further initiative to promote the game in schools, All Golds President, Lionel Hurst, has offered the All Golds Cup and major financial backing to the RFL for a top Independent Schools 9s competition to be held in Gloucestershire alongside the 1908 and Golden Fern Cups.

Cheltenham Phoenix were the big winners from the Magic Weekend as their huge win over the Gloucestershire Warriors added to Swindon’s loss to Oxford Cavaliers gives them a six-point lead in Pool 2. The Phoenix were in rampant form against a Warriors side that played most of the game with 12 men after a dismissal as they racked up a club record score.
They crossed for 13 tries against a poor Warriors
side that only rarely mounted any pressure but found the Phoenix defence
in excellent form. Paul Bartlett grabbed four tries and James Barrett crossed for a hat-trick. Marcus Raymond kicked nine goals in the rout.
Bristol Sonics consolidated their position at the head of Pool 1 with a 50-22 win over Forest Bulldogs, who are steadily improving in their first season playing the game.
Portsmouth Seahawks claimed the spoils in the south coast derby winning 50-32 in Southampton, a result that keeps them

in second place behind the Sonics who had comfortably won their derby with Gloucestershire Warriors 78-26 the previous week.
Southampton had followed up their win over Swindon with a win over the Bulldogs in Round 5 to maintain the pressure on St George, though the loss to the Seahawks has stopped their momentum a little.
Struggling Somerset Vikings were unable to raise a side for their game with Bath Romans during the Magic round after they had lost three players due to injury in their 44-30 loss to Cheltenham the previous week.
This weekend’s fixtures see Pool 1 leaders Bristol Sonics having the bye and they will be interested to see whether Portsmouth can close the gap on them by beating the Romans at home. Oxford Cavaliers could take advantage of any slip as they travel to Gloucester to face the Warriors looking for their first league double over their opponents since 2012.
Coincidentally, Pool 2 leaders Cheltenham Phoenix have the bye and will be onlookers as second placed Swindon St George look to close the six point gap with a win at Forest Bulldogs. Similarly, the Spitfires need to take the points from Somerset Vikings to ensure they keep in touch with the top two.
RUGBY LEAGUE UNITES FATHER AND SON
Bath Romans celebrated their first ever midweek fixture against Oxford Cavaliers recently but it was a bittersweet occasion.
The game was tightly poised after 51 minutes’ play with the Cavaliers leading 14-6 when Romans’ fullback Jimmy Godfrey suffered an awful broken ankle which brought the game to a premature end.
There was a more heartwarming angle to the game as Russ Preston and Sam Goulding became the first father and son to play together for the Romans.
Russ lost touch with son Sam over ten years ago after a divorce, but Sam got back in touch with his dad two years ago, and they turned to rugby league to build their relationship.
As a youngster, Russ played for Bath Rugby Colts and Under 21s, but broke his leg in seven places and was told he would never play again.
But he proved the experts wrong and began playing rugby again for Trowbridge RFC at the age of 38, before switching to Rugby League aged 40. Sam had played for Chippenham RFC and Devizes RFC, before going along to watch the Romans with the intention of getting involved as a player.
Russ said: “Playing Rugby League has helped to strengthen my relationship with Sam and I am now keen to focus on rugby league with the Romans.
Romans Chairman Chris Chatten added: “It’s nice to know that the club played a part in helping bring Sam and Russ closer together.”

The All Golds CLS side remain in fourth after narrow defeats in their last two games at the hands of the West Wales Raiders and Valley Cougars.
Things get no easier as this Saturday they face the London Chargers at Gordon League RFC (kick off 2.30pm) looking to turn those narrow reverses into a win.
It will be a tough ask against a side going well in their debut season in the CLS and
who won the corresponding fixture 28-16 earlier in the campaign.
The Chargers have beaten Valley Cougars twice already this season and sit on the Welsh side’s coat tails in second place.
Their preparations last weekend were hampered as the West Wales Raiders were unable to raise a side for the long trip to the capital and did not travel. That could spell bad news for the watch the Romans with the
intention of getting involved and fresh for the challenge while the home side will no doubt still be feeling the effects of a battering from the Cougars last weekend.
The All Golds were out muscled by the West Wales Raiders as they went down 26-24 at a wet PoW a fortnight ago. The Raiders showed enough grit and determination to hold off an All Golds outfit that simply made too many errors as they chased the result late in the game.

Twice the All Golds led by 10 points but let the result slip in the last quarter after Harry Kidd, Luke Stephens, Dale Walters and Callum Bradbury had touched down, Archie Gibbs landing four goals to put them 24-14 up.
At Treharris RFC the following week, the All Golds put on a fine performance against a Valley Cougars side that played half of the second period with 11 men following a red card and two yellows. The Future Ferns led four times during the game with the Cougars only getting their noses in front for the last six minutes of play.
With a fairly settled forward pack, the All Golds side were back to somewhere near full strength last weekend as they led for much of the game against the Cougars falling at the death to a late score.
Sam Hodge opened the scoring for the All Golds, Kidd crossed again for his seventh try of the season and Jack Uren celebrated his England Colleges call-up with a sensational individual effort. Gibbs added four goals to the tally, but it wasn’t quite enough to defeat last season’s Grand Finalists.
This weekend’s fixtures see champions Nottingham Outlaws go into a repeat of the 2015 Grand Final with the Valley Cougars this weekend on the back of a comfortable 50-8 win over Coventry Bears.
Adam Cunliffe crossed for three tries and added seven goals for good measure while Oliver Dale, Joe Barton, Adam Simm, Jon Christie and Sam Campbell all went over the whitewash as the Outlaws notched back-to-back wins for the first time since the opening weeks of the season.
Tawanda Chipadza and Roddy Jones scored unconverted tries for the home side.
The Bears travel to Torfaen Tigers looking to end a run of four defeats in five games while the Tigers will be aiming for the win that would close the gap on the Raiders at the foot of the table.
