‘All is fair in love’ a saying that is understood perfectly by the Balinese. When love from a man or woman seems impossible to achieve, it is time for magic to join the game. AmuletThere are many kinds of amulet that are used to gain love from a man or woman, the most powerful of all is the Arjuna coin and Moon coin. They are kept wrapped in a little rag covered with ointments and flower petals so that they will not ‘die’ and become useless. The most popular amulet of love is the rerajahan, a drawing of sacred image and characters on a piece white cloth. The process of making this amulet can be described as follow:

Drawing the sacred image or characters. Bringing the sacred image or characters into being with its accompanying mantra, then

making it alive with the Pengurip mantra, followed by a joining mantra, concluded with the Pasupati mantra that imbues all with sakti (magical force).

A set of offering is needed to make this amulet; this amulet is kept in a little black and white chessboard-patterned rag.

CharmCharm in Balinese magic needs a specific medium that is hard to find. Balinese believes that a rare medium and a right mantra (spell) produce a powerful charm. The well known medium for love charm in Balinese magic are twin coconuts or twin bananas, and even more effective are the saliva of a snake, the tears of a child, the oil from a coconut that has been dragged around by a child, or that from a coconut tree under which a pregnant woman has sat. The name of the mantra (spell) for these mediums are varied, they are ‘i jaring sutra‘ (The silken net), ‘ i naga bilad ‘ (the crawling serpent), and the ‘ i tuntung tanggis ‘ (constant weeping).

PotionLove potion is the fastest way in gaining love from a difficult man or woman. The potion is usually rub in any part of the victim’s body, a tiny drop of potion is enough. The best material for love potion in Bali is the tears of mermaid. This material has to be magically processed with various offerings and incantation.

SpellSpell is the most difficult magical way in gaining love. Many rules, prohibitions and requirements have to be fulfilled and observed before someone is allowed to use a love spell. Without fulfilling and observing all these rules, prohibitions and requirements the power of the spell will be void. The power of the spell is depend on the magical quality of the speller.
