Hello Corvette Enthusiasts,

I cannot believe the summer of 2014 is almost over! Let me begin

by congratulating the newly elected officers and board members.

I look forward to working with you in my second year as President.

With September upon us, AACC is going to be very active. It has been many years

since AACC held a Road Rally but on September 13th, that is going to change. The

route is complete and sign‐ups are underway. On September 20th is an autocross,

another event AACC hasn’t hosted for some time. Our autocross (3 NCCC sanc‐

tions) is open to all makes of cars and will be held in the parking lot at Steel‐

Stacks. The cones will be cleared away that evening because on September 21st,

AACC hosts our first Fiberglass & Steel All‐Chevy show in the same parking lot. All

of these planned events require volunteers to help make them both fun and suc‐

cessful. Please attend our regular monthly meetings for the latest updates and

sign‐up sheets for these events.

Surfing the web, I found an article on 2014 Corvette Stingray production num‐

bers. The 2014 model year officially ended on Friday, August 8th. 35,523 Corvette

Stingrays were built, plus 1,050 Premiere Edition Coupes and Convertibles, with

their own special series of VIN numbers, bringing 2014 total production to

36,573. What an amazing turn around for Corvette!

Be safe & be well.

AACC’s business year runs

from September 1 through

August 31. That means it’s

membership renewal time again. Please

see page 7 of this newsletter for the

renewal form.

NOTE to LIFETIME MEMBERS:

It is now mandatory to submit this form

each year to maintain lifetime member-

ship status.

It’s Time to Renew

AACC will be busy celebrating our 45th Anniversary during mid‐

September. On Sat., Sep. 13, we will have our first road rallye in

many years. Road Captains Dennis Kuhns and Jeff Mohring have

mapped out a course through some less‐traveled roads sure to

make you happy to live in the Lehigh Valley. Starting in Easton, PA,

there are plenty of clues to find along the way to the “destination”

end point.

One week later, we are having a “Race & Shine” Weekend. On Sat.,

Sep. 20, AACC invites our fellow parking lot racers to join us for an

NCCC triple autocross at SteelStacks (Bethlehem, PA). This event is

open to all vehicles (not just ‘Vettes) and will test your skills pilot‐

ing through the course at PNC Plaza.

We wrap up our 45th celebration on Sun., Sep. 21 with the Fiber‐

glass & Steel All‐Chevy Show. In the same parking lot at SteelStacks

we hope to have 150 cars and trucks wearing their bowties. There

are separate voting classes for visiting Corvettes by generation,

special club car groupings, and Chevrolet vehicles (by decades).

AACC wants to thank all our volunteers for making these events

possible and hopes club members will come out in support!

8 Crazy Days!

Sat., Sep. 27 — AACC members are invited

to display their Corvettes at the Valley Pre‐

ferred Cycling Center (Breinigsville, PA) as

part of the annual Eastern PA Down Syn‐

drome Center “Buddy Walk.” To participate

with Team Olivia, contact Bruce or Sharon

Carney at 610‐759‐9544.

Sat., Oct. 04 | All AACC members are invited for an after dinner

dessert event at our new place located at 6 Montclair Ct. in Ocean

Pines at 8 pm. No RSVP is required and plenty of parking!

Get lost? Call Bud @ 610.428.1215 or Karin @ 610.730.6707.

We'll be there from 8 on and hope to see everybody!

Wheels for Meals Show by Len Feinberg (‘13) Sun., Aug. 3 | Participating Members from both Easton and Allentown Clubs converged on the Stroudsburg‐Pocono

Airport for the Wheels for Meals Car Show. This show was to benefit both the Monroe and Northampton County's

Meals on Wheels programs. Several clubs got together to put on the show, including EACC, Monroe County Cruisers,

High Winders Car Club, Lost in Time Car Club, Tri‐County Vettes and the Trolley Shops Cruisers. In addition to the Chi‐

nese Auction, 50/50, door prizes, and vendors, show attendees could watch skydivers coming out of the clouds. It was

a judged show for the top 50 cars and trucks and representatives of the Meals on Wheels picked the best of show. The

Winners included: Scott Marakovits, Mike Cutro, Rick Serfass, Len Feinberg, and some guy with a dog.

Sun., Aug. 10 | Sunday it was the EACC's 17th Vettes for Pets show at Meuser Park. There a

record number of cars and trucks that showed up for the show, 270 in all. Quite a few vendors

were there selling detailing supplies, race ramps, craft items, jewelry, and other items. With your choice of food from

Geekers, the Hippie Pig, or and Ice Cream truck, I don't think anyone went home hungry. A large Chinese Auction,

50/50, bake sale, quilt raffle, and display by the Center for Animal Health and Welfare gave show attendees something

to check out during the day, or you could just take a snooze in the shade. There were trophies for the top twenty‐five

chosen by participant voting. A good time was had by all for a good cause. Winners included: Jim Bambu (Camaro),

George Wetherhold (Corvette), and Gary Warmkessel (Corvette).

Sun., Aug. 17 | It was a beautiful day in the neighborhood and that neighborhood was Bicentennial Park for the annual

AACC Picnic. Ninety‐one club members and friends arrived at the park for fun, food, games, and camaraderie.

Grumpy's Bar‐B‐Que Roadhouse was on hand to cook and serve all the food. Sandi Kirby from Faulkner showed up with

a C7 Vette for everyone to check out. Gary and Joann took it for a short test drive. Sandi also had a special deal for any

AACC member interested in a 2014 C7. There was a cake with our 45 year logo on it for dessert. As people were leav‐

ing, everyone got a coffee mug with the current logo and a patch with an old logo. A good time was had by all.

Each AACC member who attended the picnic should have gone home with a mug and patch. If you did not receive

yours, please notify either Jeff Mohring or Laura Hegyi.

Fri.‐Sun., Aug. 22‐24 | The Corvette community once again headed to Mecca (a.k.a. Car‐

lisle County Fairgrounds) for the 31st Annual Corvettes at Carlisle. Many club members

were spotted walking the grounds during the 3 days of the event, taking in the burnout

contest, attending seminars, checking out the Z06 in the GM Engineering tent or the

gaggle of 64’s, getting an exhaust system installed, searching the flea market vendors for

the correct tail light, or just people‐watching from the grandstands. Sunday saw the NJ

Caravan set out for the NCM 20th Anniversary Corvette Caravan. The weather wasn’t

perfect, but the Corvettes were all beautiful!!

Mon., Aug 22 | Chevrolet has announced pricing for the C7 Z06, and it’s a shocker – Base price for the coupe is just

$78,995, while the drop‐top will set buyers back $83,995. When you consider that the 2014 Z51 coupe we tested ear‐

lier this year had an MSRP of $65,530 with options like the 2LT package, Magnetic Ride Control, and the interior carbon

fiber trim, the $13.5k step up to the new Z06 seems pretty reasonable.

It’s an especially nice surprise in light of the expectation it would be priced in C6 ZR1 territory, somewhere north of

$100k. Granted, adding in options like the Carbon Fiber Ground Effects Package ($2,995), the Z07 package which in‐

cludes carbon‐ceramic brakes ($7,995), and ticking all the other option boxes will take a big bite out of the change

you’d get back from your $100k bill, but even fully loaded, the Z06 still delivers a hell of a lot of value for the money.

Three different levels of aero are offered:

The standard Z06 features a front splitter, spats around the front wheel openings, a unique carbon‐fiber hood with

a larger vent, and an aggressive rear spoiler.

The available carbon‐fiber aero package – in either carbon flash paint or a visible carbon‐fiber finish – adds a car‐

bon‐fiber front splitter with aviation‐style winglets, carbon fiber rocker panels, and a larger rear spoiler with a fixed

wickerbill, which combine to create true aerodynamic downforce.

The available Z07 package adds larger winglets to the front splitter, along with an adjustable, see‐through center

section on the rear spoiler for track use. With this package, the Corvette Z06 delivers the most aerodynamic down‐

force of any production car GM has tested.

Additional options include 1LT, 2LT, and 3LT trim levels, as well as a menu of other goodies. … Of course, the 650‐

horsepower supercharged LT4 is standard on the Z06, as is Magnetic Ride Control, Performance Traction Management

and an electronic limited slip differential. …

Wed., Aug. 20 | Lightweight, forged parts improve Corvette performance top to bottom.

Chevy let us drive a Corvette with an eight‐speed automatic transmission yesterday, but

engineers also told us a little more about the upcoming 650‐hp LT4 engine destined for

the next Corvette Z06.

The LT4 is only 1 inch taller than the LT1, despite the addition of a supercharger meas‐

uring 1.74 liters. It couldn’t be much taller because the Corvette still had to be certi‐

fied for pedestrian protection.

The fuel system on the LT4 features a higher‐flow fuel pump than the LT1, working at 2900 psi, a new fuel rail as‐

sembly and high‐flow injectors that can pass 25cc of fuel per second. Direct injection helps keeps the cylinder and

forged pistons cool.

LT4 engines run a 10:1 compression ratio with aluminum alloy cylinder heads, a compact combustion chamber and

titanium intake valve seats. The exhaust manifold is made from cast stainless steel.

All Z06’s get the dry sump oiling system that’s an option on the Stingray. The oil cooler is larger, while the oil pump

gets high‐strength gears for extra durability.

There are a few more technical bits in the PDF [online], but what's the result? In 2004 the Corvette Z06 lapped the

’Ring in an impressive 7 minutes, 56 seconds. Eight years later, in 2012, the C6 Z06 dropped that time by 34 seconds to

7 minutes, 22 seconds. Chevy didn’t tell us the lap time of the new car yet, but judging by their knowing glances, it's

significantly lower. The Z06 will be built at GM’s Bowling Green Plant. We expect to see the car on lots early next year.

Wed., Aug 20 | Faster shifting, lighter weight Corvette gearbox goes the torque converter route. Chevrolet has offi‐

cially revealed the new 8L90 eight‐speed automatic transmission destined for duty in the 2015 Corvette. The 6.2‐liter

V8/eight‐speed combo is good for a 0‐60 time of 3.7 seconds, 29 mpg and faster shifts than many dual‐clutch transmis‐

sions ‐‐ most notably the one found in the Porsche 911.

We tested the 2015 Corvette on General Motors' famous Milford Road Course test track and the streets surrounding.

We're not going to say the new automatic is better than a manual transmission; it isn’t. There’s still no way it can

match the involvement or control of rowing your own gears. But we can say with authority that a dual‐clutch isn’t the

only way to go if you insist on letting the car shift itself.

Chevy went with the torque‐converter automatic over a dual‐clutch for a few reasons: The DCTs on the market would‐

n’t fit in the space reserved for the 2014’s six‐speed, and it also works better with the Corvette’s Active Fuel Manage‐

ment system that helps get that 29‐mpg EPA estimate.

The 8L90 weighs about 8 pounds less than the outgoing six‐speed automatic thanks to extensive use of magnesium and

aluminum. A taller top gear leads to an 8 percent decrease in engine rpm at 70 mph.

Out on the roller coaster that is the Milford Road Course, we threw the Corvette into track mode, tossed in our SD

cards for the Performance Data Recorders and left the gear shift in D. It takes about two turns and a hard braking event

to get the trans to realize you’re on a racetrack, then it switches into what we’ll call “redline mode.” At that point, the

transmission kicks into the lowest gear possible at the current speed. It’ll drop down three when you’re on the brakes

hard, and hold at high rpms indefinitely if you keep the throttle steady.

We only caught the new transmission hunting once in about 12 laps on the difficult course, and that could have been

our fault with sloppy pedal work ‐‐ feathering the gas when we should be flooring it, or the other way around. It is a

little unsettling seeing the shift lights on the dash flashing, which means “shift,” while and transmission just hangs in

gear and the exhaust wails at full rpm.

Once your driving has settled down off the track, the eight‐speed automatically adjusts back into “street mode.”

After driving three high‐powered cars with eight‐speed, torque‐converter automatics (Challenger SRT Hellcat, Jaguar F‐

Type R and now the Corvette), we can say the newest models are every bit as good as the dual‐clutch setups. They can

shift as fast, feel smoother and aren’t rough on low‐speed launches like many of the performance‐oriented DCTs on the

market, giving you all of the advantages and none of the disadvantages.

No automatic offers the connected driving experience of a true manual, but they get closer every year; Corvette buyers

who want an automatic now have the option of one of the best units on the market today.

Museum Board Finalizes Decision on Sinkhole, Great 8 Corvettes Aug 30 | The National Corvette Museum Board of Directors held their quarterly meeting and finalized plans for repair

of the Museum’s Skydome building, and the eight Corvettes affected by the February 12, 2014 sinkhole collapse. After

careful review of additional information and revised plans with price quotes from the construction company, the board

voted to completely fill in the sinkhole.

“We really wanted to preserve a portion of the hole so that guests for years to come could see a little bit of what it was

like, but after receiving more detailed pricing, the cost outweighs the benefit,” said Museum Executive Director

Wendell Strode. “At the June board meeting, the information available at that time indicated a cost of around

$500,000 more to keep the hole, but after incorporating additional safety features and vapor barriers for humidity con‐

trol, the price tag rose to $1 million more than the cost to put the Skydome back how it was.”

Keeping even a portion of the sinkhole would require 35 foot retaining walls to be built inside of the sinkhole, addi‐

tional micro piling, visible steel beams running through the hole, and soil nailing. All of these additional structural fea‐

tures are to ensure the safety of the sinkhole and prevent cracking and breaking of the sides in the future, which could

result in stability issues, but take away from the natural look of the original sinkhole. The board also considered future

maintenance issues that could arise if the hole was kept and the possibility that the hole wouldn’t look like a naturally

occurring sinkhole any longer.

“The interest in our new attraction has been phenomenal so we do plan to leave it ‘as‐is’ through our Vets ‘n Vettes

event November 6‐8, 2014, after which time we will begin the process of remediating and filling the hole,” Strode

added.

Chevrolet and the National Corvette Museum will restore three of the Corvettes that were damaged when they were

swallowed up by the sinkhole. Chevrolet will restore the 2009 Corvette ZR1 prototype, known as the Blue Devil, and

the 1‐millionth Corvette produced – a white 1992 convertible. The GM Heritage Center will oversee this process. In ad‐

dition, the restoration of the 1962 Corvette will be funded by Chevrolet, but will be handled by the National Corvette

Museum. A restoration shop has not yet been determined. The remaining five cars were determined to be too badly

damaged to warrant restoration. They will remain in their as‐recovered state to preserve the

historical significance of the cars and what happened on February 12, 2014. They will become part of a future display at

the Museum.

In total, General Motors will provide nearly $250,000 in support to help the Museum recover from the sinkhole. The

National Corvette Museum celebrates its 20th anniversary this weekend as it welcomes the Corvette enthusiasts na‐

tionwide who have helped expand and support the non‐profit Museum.

“Our goal was to help the National Corvette Museum recover from a terrible natural disaster by restoring all eight

cars,” said Mark Reuss, GM Executive Vice President, Global Product Development. “However, as the cars were recov‐

ered, it became clear that restoration would be impractical because so little was left to repair. And, frankly, there is

some historical value in leaving those cars to be viewed as they are.”

It’s a sentiment echoed by Corvette enthusiasts from around the globe.

“There has been an outpouring of messages from enthusiasts the world over, asking us not to restore all of the cars,”

said Wendell Strode, executive director for the National Corvette Museum. “For Corvette enthusiasts, the damage to

the cars is part of their history, and part narrative of the National Corvette Museum. Restoring them all would negate

the significance of what happened.”

Timelines for the start and projected completion dates for the three Corvettes’ restorations have not been established.

They will be announced later.

Mon., Aug 18 | If car enthusiasts were to make a list of things they

don’t trust, valet services would consistently be in the top three. Hell,

most of us car enthusiasts have problems handing over the keys to a

Honda Civic, let alone our priceless (in our own mind) weekend driver.

Chevrolet has come to alleviate those fears a bit by adding a Valet

Mode to the 2015 Corvette as a standard option. The system allows

the driver to lock interior storage compartments, disable infotainment,

and can monitor the pimply teenage driver behind the wheel of your baby with audio, video and vehicle data all being

recorded. Valet Mode is activated through the use of a four digit pass code in the settings menu that makes it only us‐

able for the owner of the car.

The very same audio, video and vehicle data function that can record valet dishonesty can also keep record of your

track times as a Performance Data Recorder. When activated, the PDR can record HD video, in‐car audio and data in‐

cluding speed, RPM, gearing and g‐forces. Any video that is recorded can be viewed instantly from the ’Vette’s monitor

or downloaded to a computer for unlimited viewing. Data recorded can be saved on to a SD card within the vehicle’s

dedicated card‐slot; more than three hours of driving video can be saved to an 8GB card.

The Corvette’s Performance Data Recorder was developed with racing partner Cosworth, the British company that sup‐

plies data telemetries for Corvette’s own racing team.

These features will be available on all 2015 Corvette models, further enhancing the Corvette’s value as the best sports

car for the money.

Caravan, but rather than try to give a real‐time update in this newsletter, we are opting to gather the photos and

stories and share them in a future publication. Here are some of the photos sent by Dennis Corona and Laura Hegyi.
