BENEFITS OF BPL

Despite the proliferation of broadband access methods in manycountries, some advantages could still be attained by rolling outBPL… 

Reduced in cost and weight. low-cost broadband on existing infrastructure. BPL accessible in areas that cannot get DSL, cable or wireless

 broadband. Even feasible in extremely remote without having to resort

latency satellite broadband.

Possibility  of  its  use  for  smart  appliances 

Home Appliances can be controlled through PC.(Provided that these devices could potentially be connected with Ethernet to a DSL connection or

controlled by PC via Bluetooth)

BPL offers a much neater solution, since a single plugacquires both

the device’s electricity and its data.

Some propose this as an aid for people with mobilityproblems.

Wireless Communication can be possible  When the BPL is used as the backhaul for wirelesscommunications.

The infrastructure poles can be used as hanging Wi-Fiaccess points or cell phone base stations on utility poles,

This allows end-users within a certain range to connectwith equipment they already have.

In the near future, BPL might also be used as abackhaul for WiMAX networks.

High speed network… 

Projected speeds up to 2.5 Gbps.

However the standard speed is 13 Mbps.

Such a system would quickly saturate but… 

Manufacturers are working on improving thetechnology to provide connections of greaterspeed, potentially making thetechnology viable. 

Proposed Technique …  The Micro waves be used instead of the lower frequency bands to transmit data (avoiding interference & aiming the

data rate of 216 Mbps.

Expected Applications 

Can provide connectivity for Distribution Automationapplications such as remote capacitor control, automatic meterreading and remote ON/OFF capabilities.

BPL can be used to create an IP access network.

Since the Grid is available throughout the country, allow everyconsumer to gain access to the Internet.

Voice over Internet Protocol, video on demand.

Telemedicine, and distance learning can be established on thesesystems.

BPL network touches all of the electrical components connected tothe electrical grid, there is an opportunity to install monitoring andsecurity devices anywhere on the Grid which has been BPL enabled.

CONCLUSION

As it is emerging technology, the next few years willdecide whether BPL can compete in the broadbandmarket.BPL offers a method of broadband access for those livingin isolated areas, who have no other viable means of 

 broadband access, therefore, it seems plausible thatwhen BPL will become available in rural areas, it will be amoderate success.However, this success is unlikely to be long-term,since telecommunications companies are already

contemplating rolling out FTTH (Fiber to the Home)connections to all of their customers sometime in thefuture.Therefore, it appears that BPL will be little more than a

stopgap solution.
