Dear Dr. Rajen,

My son is 7 years old and has started Standard One. Just like other children, he used to have fever, cold and cough during kindergarten days and he hated any liquid medicine. So I would just give him some chewable vitamin C in the hope that his condition would improve. However, his cough, cold, runny nose and fever came on and off. A relative recommended GRIFATON™ – the natural immunity booster for children. I am so happy to see the change in my child after he had taken GRIFATON™. He has no more coughing or runny nose the past month (even with his sisters coughing and sniffing around him!). Not only did my son enjoy the flavour but he looks forward to have this drink every morning before he goes to school. He has just finished one can of GRIFATON™ and I’m getting another for my two daughters who are aged 9 and 12.

Yours sincerely, Mrs. Ho, Kuala Lumpur

With mixed feelings, I pen the Editor’s Note for the last issue of this newsletter that was launched in July 2001. It has been an eventful eight-year journey.

I am sad that ALTERNI TIMES will no longer be published but at the same time I am really excited about another bigger journey that is about to begin soon.

Stay tuned for a major announcement soon. Believe me, it is going to put us in an even better position to serve you better with world class products.

Elsewhere, our ALTERNI boutique store at the Amcorp mall in Petaling Jaya continues to grow

in terms of customers served. We have also launched a range of products from the hive. In fact, our customers visiting our outlet are treated to a “living” hive right in front of the store.

Oh, yes, all of us are really pleased to have raised RM36,069.10 for the people of Haiti who are suffering after the earthquake struck the island on 12th January (see page 24).

You should feel good too. It was your support of our products for the two-week period from 19th January to 2nd February this year that raised the amount. On behalf of the disaster-struck people of Haiti, we say Terima Kasih to all of you.

THE traditional medicines of Asia, especially those from India and China, which date back thousands of years, lead the world in traditional medicine. These Asian systems were truly ahead of that in the West.

Today, traditional medicine, backed by cutting edge science, is making a comeback the world over and Asian traditional medicine is especially popular in North America and Europe,

Indeed, the use of supplements derived from natural sources has grown tremendously since the global financial crisis struck three years ago.

Traditional medicine, also known as indigenous or folk medicine, is a medical knowledge system that developed over countless generations within various societies before the era of modern medicine.

The knowledge and observations of the learned local physicians have been passed down and refined over the ages.

Practices known as traditional medicines include herbal cures, Ayurveda, Siddha medicine, Unani, ancient Iranian medicine, Arab medicine, traditional Chinese medicine and acupuncture and other medical knowledge and practices all over the globe.

WHOThe World Health Organisation defines traditional medicine as “The health practices, approaches, knowledge and beliefs incorporating plant, animal and mineral-based medicines, spiritual therapies, manual techniques and exercises, applied singularly or in combination to treat, diagnose and prevent illnesses or maintain well-being.”

It is believed that up to 80 percent of the world population rely on traditional medicine for their primary healthcare needs. When adopted outside of its traditional culture, traditional medicine is often called complementary or alternative medicine. Core disciplines that study traditional medicine include ethnomedicine, ethnobotany and medical anthropology.

Many of today’s leading drugs were discovered by chance or based on traditional medicine. Traditional knowledge-based products have fared well. About 60 percent of anti-cancer and 75 percent of anti-infective drugs approved from 1981-2002 came from natural product leads. Over 100 natural product-based drugs are now in development.

Ayurvedic LeadsJust look at drugs that come from Ayurveda, the Indian ancient science of healing.

Among them are psoralens from the Indian breadroot Psoralea corylifolia for vitiligo; holarrhena (bitter oleander) and Holarrhena pubescens (syn Holarrhena antidysenterica) bark alkaloids for amoebiasis, a gastrointestinal infection; guggulsterons (from guggul [Commiphora mukul]) for hyperlipidemia: velvet bean (cowitch; Mucuna pruriens) for Parkinson's disease; bioavailability-enhancing piperidines from peppers [Piper spp]; and bacosides (from bacopa [water hyssop; Bacopa monnieri]) to boost memory.

They also include hepatoprotective picrosides (from picrorhiza; [kutki; Picrorhiza kurrooa]); antiviral phyllanthins (from phyllanthus [Indian gooseberry [Phyllanthus spp]); curcumins (from turmeric [Curcuma longa]) to fight inflammation; and immunomodulatory withanoids (from ashwagandha [Withania somnifera]) which are in clinical trials in the United States as an adjuvant for cancer treatment, and more.

This has lead to the concept of “reverse pharmacology” which mines clinical experience and experiential observation for leads, and develops drug candidates

through robust pre-clinical and clinical research. In today’s world of rising costs and increased regulatory demands, this saves both time and money.

Reversing The Process The modern medicine paradigm is an art of discovering a potentially toxic but likely effective compound and then subject it to the laboratory studies. It is an approach called “mice to man”.

In “reverse pharmacology”, you look for a compound that was used safely in man for ages and then knowing it is safe and effective, subjecting it to analysis for better understanding of the mechanism of action in an approach called “man to mice”.

Sir Ram Nath Chopra and Gananath Sen founded the approach. They documented the clinical effects of Ayurvedic drugs. Rauwolfia (snakeroot; Rauvolfia serpentina) alkaloids for hypertension were their major discovery, and it led to new antidepressants, anti-Parkinson's drugs and prolactin-reducing drugs.

Promising work began in the 1970s and 1980s in a joint programme of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the Indian government's Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR).

This resulted in two breakthroughs — guggulipid for cholesterol lowering and a memory-enhancing product from bacopa. However, this is a tiny fraction of the products that could become available with reverse pharmacology.

New Millennium Approach To better develop the potential of herbal drugs, CSIR, under a New Millennium Indian Technology Leadership Initiative (NMITLI), has initiated projects on psoriasis, osteoarthritis, hepatitis, and diabetes.

The Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) established an Advanced Centre of Reverse Pharmacology, initially focusing on malaria, sarcopenia and cognitive decline.

The psoriasis project has led to an Investigational New Drug application in India; the product, a single plant extract, is in Phase 3 trials and will meet (US) FDA standards as well as those of India's regulators.

In another project, new vaccine adjuvants were sought. A detailed safety profile of one of several leads has been developed.

Besides molecular drug leads, both Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine offer multi-herb approaches to polygenic conditions. While multi-herb formulas have been used for thousands of years, there is new interest in multiple chemical agents ("polypills").

In just five years, the NMITLI osteoarthritis project has led to patent applications for a polyherbal product; an industrial partner is being sought.

Global Effort Internationally, the Indian Department of Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy has established a research centre at the University of Mississippi to study Indian herbal medicines.

In Tanzania, the Tanga AIDS Working Group, Global Research Alliance, World Bank, and US National Institutes of Health have partnered to study traditional herbs used in AIDS and its opportunistic infections.

In China, traditional medicine includes a range of such treatments as herbal medicine, acupuncture, dietary therapy, and Shiatsu massage. Qigong and Taijiquan are also closely associated with traditional Chinese medicine.

Chinese Approach This system of medicine, said to be thousands of years old, is rooted in meticulous observation of nature, the cosmos and the human body. Major theories include those of Yin-Yang, the Five Phases, the human body Channel system, Zang Fu organ theory, Six Confirmations and Four Layers.

Modern traditional Chinese medicine was systematised in the 1950s.

In the 1970s, traditional Chinese medicine tipped off researchers to qinghaosu, a compound in sweet wormwood whose derivatives are potent anti-malaria drugs.

More recently, China launched the ambitious 15-year Herbalome Project to modernise traditional medicine. The venerable concoctions of traditional Chinese medicine — as many as 400,000 preparations using 10,000 herbs and animal tinctures – are the treatment of choice and often the only recourse for many in that country.

Herbalome will use high-throughput screening, toxicity testing, and clinical trials to identify active compounds and toxic contaminants in popular recipes.

“We need to ensure that traditional Chinese medicine is safe and also show that it is not just qinghaosu,” says Guo De-an, who leads traditional Chinese medicine modernisation efforts at the Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica. Guo is not involved in Herbalome.

A lot of work is also ongoing in Tsinghua University, China’s leading science and Technology University, and the University in Shanghai.

Initial targets are cancer, liver and kidney diseases, and illnesses that are difficult for Western medicine to treat, such as diabetes and depression.”

Malay Medicine Jamu medicine is the traditional medicine practiced in Malaysia and Indonesia. Rumphius, a botanist, who published the book Herbaria Amboinesis, had conducted the study of jamu as early as the year 1775.

A scientific research for jamu by the research centre of herbal medicine in the Bogor Botanical Garden resulted in the publication of the book Medical Book for Children and Adults by E. Van Bent.

The first seminar on jamu was held in Solo in 1940, followed by a formation of Indonesia's Jamu Committee in 1944. In 1966, a seminar on jamu was held again. In 1981, the book, The Use of Medical Plant, was published to support the jamu industry in that country.

There is science coming into that as well with research happening in various Indonesian and Malaysian universities.

Clearly, science-based Asian traditional medicine can make a big impact on global health. A lot has been done and even more needs to be done.

Recently a store that promotes at the science-based research products of Asian traditional medicine was opened in Petaling Jaya to allow Malaysians access to these products.

JUST like its geography the Asian diet is as varied and versatile. While geography has historically determined whether or not fish was in the diet, fish is a staple in many Asian diets and eaten very little in others. Fish is a very healthy food linked with the prevention of chronic diseases such as heart disease and cancer. Fatty fish – like Japanese favourites salmon and fresh tuna, mackerel, sardines, and herring – are a great source of omega-3 fatty acids, which are known for their heart-health and mood-boosting benefits. The February 2008 issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reported the outcome of a Canadian clinical trial which found a beneficial effect for EPA (Eicosapentaenoic acid) in middle-aged women suffering from psychological distress. Eicosapentaenoic acid is an omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid that occurs in fish oil which, along with docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), has been linked with many health benefits.

FishHarvard Medical School researchers found that fish oil supplementation lowers systolic blood pressure and diastolic pressure. However, toxins are being increasingly dumped into our oceans. Fishes not only carry these toxins but concentrate them in their livers and bodies. Some of these toxins – heavy metals, PCBs and dioxins – can cause brain retardation, heart disease, liver problems and cancer.More and more people, because of contaminated fish, the difficulties of finding fresh fish and other issues, are taking fish oil supplements. If you take fish oil supplements, make sure they are molecularly distilled. An even more refined process is called Omatech, an advanced molecular distillation process that ensures the fish oil is 100 percent toxin free.

Eating fish that is not over cooked As omega-3 fatty acids are very heat sensitive, avoid heat. Raw is best as with sushi and shashimi, otherwise, steaming, and boiling and stir-frying is good.

Eating enough fish You need around three servings of fish per week, each serving about the size of your palm.

Eating fish that is fresh Fresh fish is best; avoid old and excessively stored fish.

Bitter and most famous

“ It has powerful antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral effects. Bitter herbs also help reduce the acidity of the blood.”

NeemMOST of us try to avoid bitter tastes. However, it is the most important taste of all, especially when it comes to the cleansing of blood and healing. Natural bitters have been a mainstay of traditional healing systems.

Chinese and Indian medicine and diets have always included bitter vegetables and herbs. Indeed, the famous Indian Thali meal will make sure that you sample all the five tastes in every meal. Even European medicine has advocated the use of bitters. Remember, Swedish bitters?

Bitter herbs are called “blood purifiers”. They can help strengthen the liver which is a bitter organ. A strengthened liver will better clean the blood passing through it. This rids blood of toxins.

One of the best known ayurvedic blood purifier is neem. It grows well in Malaysia. The Malays call it daun mambu, while the Chinese call it chin sou chin and Indians veepelai.

It is often used for measles and chicken pox. There is documentation of its use in other skin conditions like psoriasis, eczema and rashes. It also seems to work at normalising blood glucose in mild diabetes.

It has powerful antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral effects. Bitter herbs also help reduce acidity of the blood.

Modern fast paced diets are filled with plant foods and animal products that are badly contaminated with hormones, antibiotics, preservatives, chemical flavours and colours.

Thus, there is a big need to help the liver detoxify. Consuming bitter herbs helps along with juices and fasting. However, when taking neem pills, make sure you are taking those that are standardised.

1. Unpasteurised Grass-Fed Organic Milk Milk from grass-fed cows contains beneficial bacteria that prime your immune system and reduce allergies. It is an outstanding source of vitamins, especially vitamin A, zinc, and enzymes.

Whey protein can help you fight off colds and flu because it contains beta-glucans and immunoglobulins, which protect your immune system and support your body’s natural detoxification processes.

2. Fermented Foods Fermented foods, like yoghurt, have friendly microorganisms that balance your “inner ecosystem” and strengthen immunity.

3. Grass-Fed Beef Grass-fed beef comes from cows that eat what they were meant to eat —grass, not corn or grains. This results in far greater health benefits for you and for the environment. Grass-fed beef is very high in vitamins A and E, omega-3

fatty acids, beta-carotene, zinc and conjugated linoleic acid, a fatty acid.

4. Locally Grown Organic Vegetables When it comes to fighting off pathogens, you simply can’t do any better than eating a variety of fresh, organic and preferably raw vegetables for the vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and enzymes they contain.

5. Blueberries and Raspberries Blueberries and raspberries rate very high in antioxidant capacity, compared to other fruits and vegetables. Wild blueberries in particular are potent immune boosters. They contain powerful phytochemicals, such as anthocyanin, which is the pigment that gives blueberries their colour.

6. Edible Mushrooms Mushrooms strengthen your immune system because they are rich in protein, fibre, vitamin C, B vitamins, calcium and other minerals, and even vitamin D – one of the only foods that can

provide you with this essential immune strengthener. Maitake mushroom, known botanically as Grifola frondosa, leads the pack.

7. Chlorella As foods go, chlorella is nearly perfect. Chlorella is a single-cell freshwater alga that acts as an efficient detoxification agent by binding to toxins, such as mercury, and carries them out of your system. It is the chlorophyll in chlorella that makes it so powerful. Chlorophyll helps you process more oxygen, cleanses your blood and promotes the growth and repair of your tissues.

8. Propolis Propolis is a bee resin and one of the most broad-spectrum antimicrobial compounds in the world. It is also the richest source of caffeic acid and apigenin, two very important phenolic compounds that aid in immune response.

9. Teas The two best types of tea for fending off microinvaders are Matcha green tea and tulsi tea.

Matcha Green Tea Matcha is the most nutrient-rich green tea and comes in the form of a stone-ground powder, completely unfermented. The best Matcha comes from Japan and has up to 17 times the antioxidants of wild blueberries.

Tulsi Tulsi tea, coming from the basil herb, has been used for thousands of years in Ayurvedic medicine. Not only is this tea loaded with antioxidants, but it has multiple health benefits, including supporting your immune health, memory and heart health.

10. Herbs and Spices Here are some of the best herbs and spices for building a strong immune system that functions correctly:

Garlic Garlic is incredibly beneficial because it offers three benefits: it’s antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal. Garlic should be consumed fresh since the active ingredient is destroyed within one hour of smashing the garlic cloves. Turmeric Its high antioxidant capacity makes it an immune system booster and an anticancer agent as well; turmeric is five to eight times stronger than vitamins C and E. Black Pepper Increases the bioavailability of just about all other foods. Cinnamon A powerful antimicrobial agent, it is found to kill E. coli and many other bacteria, and has anti-inflammatory compounds. Cloves Its mild anesthetic benefits are useful for toothaches and sore throats; and it is a good anti-inflammatory agent.

APITHERAPY is the use of bee products like honey, pollen, propolis, royal jelly and bee venom for the prevention of, the healing and recovery from diseases.

The use of honeybee products for medical purpose can be traced back to the times of the ancient Chinese and it is also documented in ancient cultures (Egypt, Greece, Roman). Hippocrates and Paracelsus, the precursors of modern medicine, used honey and other bee products in their medicine too.

In China and other Asian countries as well as in Russia and in Latin America, apiculture products still belong to the medical and family pharmacopoeia and apitherapy specialised hospitals treat different patients with serious diseases, such as cancers, multiple sclérosis, etc.

Therapy protocols are being presented regularly by teams from these countries at the congresses organised annually by the German Apitherapy Society since 2002.

The well documented history of apitherapy in Chinese medicine and a general boom of traditional Chinese medicine in Europe makes it most interesting for us to compare the use of bee products in traditional medicine and in modern apitherapy.

Apitherapy had been well documented in traditional Chinese medicine for treating systemic immune diseases, allergic diseases, viral diseases and organic-specific inflammatory diseases since more than one thousand years ago (Yu, S.C. 1999).

For the proper use of the bee products it is important to understand the complexity of the interactions among the five elements of traditional Chinese medicine (earth, wood, water, metal and fire) and the correspondent with the five most important bee products – honey, pollen, royal jelly, propolis and bee venom.

Considering these dynamic inter-dependences for a wide range of diseases a highly beneficial medical effect can be obtained with the appropriate application of bee products.

Ancient Chinese physicians, Hippocrates and Paracelsus knew their bees

6. You don't snore Snoring is a major sign of obstructive

sleep apnea, a disorder that causes you to stop breathing briefly because throat tissues collapse and block your airway. In severe cases, this can happen 60 to 70 times per hour. Sleep apnea can cause high blood pressure, memory problems, weight gain and depression.

1. You're the life of the party Outgoing people are 50 percent less

likely to develop dementia. Researchers speculate that their more resilient brains may be due to lower levels of cortisol — studies show that over-secretion of this "stress hormone" can inhibit brain cells' communication.

2. You run for 40 minutes a day Middle-aged people who run for a

total of five hours per week live longer and function better physically and cognitively as they got older. They didn't just suffer from fewer heart diseases – they also develop fewer cases of cancer, neurological diseases, and infections.

3. You feel 13 years younger Feeling youthful is linked to better

health and a longer life. It can improve optimism and motivation to overcome challenges, which helps reduce stress and boost your immune system.

The Holista Haitian Healing charity drive sprung into action a week after the quake and ended on 2nd February, raising a total of RM36,069.10. The donations came from percentage of sales during the charity drive, public donations at the Amcorp Mall G15 outlet in Petaling Jaya as well as contributions from the staff of Holista. Thank you all. The money raised was sent to the Haitian quake victims through the Malaysian Red Cross Society.

The earthquake that struck Haiti on 12th January left over 200,000 dead and more than 300,000 injured. The 7.0 magnitude quake left over 1 million people homeless. For a country of only 9 million, it meant that one in 10 persons were left homeless.

Expert Answers to your health concerns

Dear Editor...

Q: Why will BONEX® never be sold in capsules?A: Two sachets of Bonex® or Bonex® Gold provide 10gm of collagen hydrolysate. This is an optimal supply of two very important amino acids in bone repairing and regenerating — glycine and proline. In order to take the same amount of glycine that is contained in Bonex®, you would have to drink three litres of milk (12 glasses) or eat 160gm (12 tablespoons) of meat daily. And to get the same amount of proline in Bonex®, you will need 0.4 litres of milk (1½ glasses) or 110gm of meat (10 tablespoons) daily.Collagen Hydrolysate is very fluffy. As such, you will need to take up to 40 capsules a day to get 10gm of it.

Q: Is ORGANOS Green Tea safe to be taken after the expiry date? A: Actually green tea is perfectly fine to be taken even after the expiry. In fact the longer the better it is. That’s how the green tea value is being assessed. Keep it in a cool and dry place (low humidity) to prevent fungal/bacterial infection.

Q: Is honey still edible after the expiry date? A: Honey when stored in a well-sealed container can remain stable for decades and even centuries. However, honey is susceptible to physical and chemical changes during storage. It tends to darken and lose its flavour or crystallise. These are temperaturedependent processes, making the shelf life for honey difficult to define.

Q: Can taking NACOX™ daily prevent future pains?A: The best time to take NACOX™ for the pain-relieving effect is when the pain arises. However, daily consumption will keep the pain at minimal level and the pain that “might be experienced in future” will not be as severe as would be without NACOX™. It is almost impossible to tell if NACOX™ prevents pain from recurring.
