MANUTERE The classic 1962 Bob Stewart-designed Manutere has been stunningly restored thanks to the skill and enthusiasm of Pine Harbour's Graham Johnson and AY&B's easy-to-use painting systems. Manutere is a much-loved Stewart 36, built in Tauranga by Oliver and Gilpin, and kept by her original owner for nearly 40 years. When she was purchased by her current owner she still had what he calls "good bones" but was in need of a big of a facelift. "She was in amazing condition for her age," he recalls, "but she was looking a bit tired." With Graham's help and advice from AY&B's Ron Brown, the owner set about a fairly major refit. All of the windows and deck fittings were removed, the coam ings were sanded back ready for revarnishing, the cabin tops and decks were re-glassed and the hull taken back to the original timber. The single-skin traditional construction hull was found to still be in perfect condition. It was re-caulked and puttied and then brush painted by the pair using AY&B's single-pot system. This consisted of multi-purpose primer, surfacer undercoat, and marine gloss enamel. Continued on next page ... STOP PRESS!

MANUTEREThe classic 1962 Bob Stewart-designed Manutere has been stunningly

restored thanks to the skill and enthusiasm of Pine Harbour's GrahamJohnson and AY&B's easy-to -use painting systems.

Manutere is a much -loved Stewart 36, built in Tauranga by Oliver andGilpin, and kept by her original owner for nearly 40 years.

When she was purchased by her current owner she still had what he calls"good bones" but was in need of a big of a facelift.

"She was in amazing condition for her age," he recalls, "but she waslooking a bit tired. "

With Graham's help and advice from AY&B's Ron Brown, the ownerset about a fairly major refit. All of the windows and deck fittings wereremoved, the coam ings were sanded back ready for revarnishing, thecabin tops and decks were re-glassed and the hull taken back to theoriginal timber.

The single-skin traditional construction hull was found to still be in perfectcondit ion. It was re-caulked and puttied and then brush painted by the pairusing AY&B's single-pot system. This consisted of multi-purpose primer, surfacer undercoat, and marine gloss enamel.

On the deck and cabin top, which are sheathed in fibreglass, they applied No.3undercoat and Elite 321 Brushing Polyurethane. The underwater surfaces wereprotected by Aurora Red No.5 antifouling over multi-purpose primer.

Finally, the mahogany coamings and cabin sides were bought back to life with 421Epoxy Timber Sealer and Timbercote Exterior High Gloss Varnish.

"Manutere is now once again a magnificent work of art," says Ron, "it really isworthy of a mantlepiece.

"Graham and the owner should be commended on what they have done, all thepainting, both one- and two-pot, was brush and roller applied, and the finish issimply superb.

"As their work shows, these new AY&B paints, specially designed for brushpainting, certainly make it easy for people to restore older boats and do the workthemselves."

Manutere's owner admits that he and Graham "went over the top" in therestoration. However, he has no regrets: "It was a lovely process to look after sucha lovely boat."

Manutere is now back doing what she was made to do: cruise the beautiful Northlandcoast with the owner and his extended family on board.

TIPS FOR BETTER PAINTING• Ensure the surface to be painted is completely

clean and dry

• Insure the paint is warm, preferably at 16-18°(Warmer paint has a lower viscosity, making itflow more easily when brush roller or sprayapplied. Placing paint in a hot water cupboard isa god idea)

• Prior to painting, ensure all cans are open andthoroughly stirred. This is especially importantwith older paint that can separate if left standingfor a long time.

• If using a two-pot system, ensure both the resinand the hardener are present are ready for use(as described above)

• Before beginning to paint, ensure you are wellprotected with the appropriate health and safetyequipment, eg: respirator, gloves and overalls

• Only mix as much paint as can be used in 60-90minutes

• To ensure the correct viscosity or thickness whenspraying use a Ford 4 Cup

• Always ensure there is plenty of air movementand ventilation, especially if painting inside

• Always refer to the Product Data Sheet forthe correct mixing and application information, recommended wet film thickness and recoattimes

CLASSIC ONE-TONNER RESTOREDTO ORIGINAL GLORYWhen Young Nick owner Frans de Court decided to restore his newly-bought

1969 One Tonner Young Nick , one of the first people he contacted was AY&B'spleasure boat manager, Ron Brown.

Young Nick, a Sparkman & Stephens design built in Auckland by Brin Wilson in1970, boasted a proud heritage and Frans was keen to keep her in her originalcolours. These included a hull painted in a 1970's bright tan, a colour not oftenseen these days.

"Because our sophisticated AY&B colour-matching system allows us to recreateliterally any colour at all, we were easily able to help Frans," says Ron. "We wereeven able to match the colour originally named 'Young Nick's Gold'."

The three skin kauri One Tonner, which actually (in the style of the day) weighsa hefty 7 tonnes, was originally owned by the famous Lou Fisher and skipperedby renowned naval architect Alan Warwick. Under their command, she finisheda creditable 3rd in the 1971 One Ton World Championships in Auckland.

However, after a lengthy ownership by Richard Stevens, which saw her cruiseand race to and from the Islands, she changed hands and fell into a state ofneglect in the Bay of Islands.

By the time Frans bought her, Young Nick needed major cosmetic surgery.Luckily, that's just what she 's received, largely at the hands of Kerikeri-basedmaster boat painter, Ian Stewart. He restored the water-damaged cockpit andrepainted the topsides, decks and coach roof (all in their AY&B-matched originalcolours) and restored the varnish work.

Thanks to lan's skill and AY&B's advice and colour matching Young Nickhas now been fully restored to her former glory and is competing weekly inWednesday and Friday night racing on Auckland 's Waitemata Harbour.
