La Salle a lu m n u s J. Russell Cullen has been nam ed to the post of ch a irm an of th e La Salle A lum ni D evelopm ent P ro g ram . H older of a Bachelor of Science degree from La Salle in the Class of 1922, Mr. Cullen is a p a r tn e r in th e firm of Nason and Cullen, builders.

Always a lead e r in La Salle u n d e r tak in g s , he was elected to the pres idency of th e General A lum ni Association in 1926. A m em b er of th e board of d irec tors of th e La Salle F o u n d a t io n since its o rgan iza t ion in 1948, Mr. Cullen was elected sec re ta ry of th e F o u n d a t io n in 1953 and re ­elec ted in 1954.

P ro m in e n t in his chosen p ro ­fession as well as in civic and genera l w elfa re activit ies , J. R ussel l Cullen is a pas t p res i­d en t and now a d irec to r of the Genera l B u i l d i n g C o n trac to rs ’ Association. He also headed the bu ild ing in d u s tr ie s section of the U nited F u n d in 1950, and was ch a irm an of the sam e o rg an iza ­t i o n ’s cam pa ign ip the Red Cross Drive in 19 5 2.

The p ro ­g ram com m ittee head ed by Joe K irk , sw im m ing coach and m od­e ra to r of the V ars i ty Club, has a r r a n g e d an a t t ra c t iv e evening. P a t te rn e d a f te r las t y e a r ’s highly successful reun ion , the schedule reads: d in n e r a t 5 :00 p.m. in the L eonard Hall ca fe te r ia on campus, followed by a m oto rcade to C onvention Hall. M onogram men of pas t years will th e re a t ­tend the second m eet ing be­tw een L o e f n e r s L a sa llians and th e Billikens of St. Louis U. The closing event will be a g a th e r in g in the L eo n ard H all ca fe te r ia w h ere “ r e f r e s h m e n t s ” w i l l doubtless em b ro id e r the ta lk of p as t deeds of daring-do by now spavined a th le te s of yes te ryear .

This event, which has proved to be a favor i te w ith le t te rm en of the past, has g row n consider­ably. L ast y e a r ’s tu r n o u t n u m ­bered well over one h u n d re d and, from all ind ications, this y e a r ’s will top them all. Loeffler's Young Team Am ong Nation’s Best

At th e s t a r t of th e 1953-1954 bask e tb a l l season th e re w as su s­picion in some q u ar te rs , convic­tion in o thers , t h a t La Salle’s previously g l e a m i n g f o r t u n e s w ould decline decidedly. A squad deple ted by g ra d u a t io n w as f u r ­th e r w e a k e n e d b y a c a d e m i c b lood-le t t ing th a t m ade for a r a th e r d ism al outlook. Even the u sua l ly jocund Old Master, K en Loeffler, was te l l ing in m o u rn ­ful n u m b ers of th e defea ts a w a i t ­ing his boys.

’52 Class Presents First Var i e ty Show

On Sunday evening, F e b ru a ry 21, th e Class of 195 2 s taged its first an n u a l V arie ty Show and Dance in th e College Hall a u d i­to r ium . This a t t ra c t io n , one of the o u ts tan d in g events of its k ind p resen ted on campus, p ro ­vided a s ta r - s tu d d ed line-up th a t riva led m an y of the b e t te r TV v a r ie ty shows.

The p ro g ram has its inception w ith the ALUMNUS’ an n o u n ce ­m en t of the p lan n ed A lum ni De­velopm ent P ro g ram . A group of La Salle-m inded ’52 m en decided to in i t ia te a schola rsh ip fund for needy h igh school g radua tes .

U nder the capable d irec tion of co-chairm en Bill A lbanese and J o h n Schmidt, the g roup began to fo rm u la te p l a n s c e n t e r e d a ro u n d an ac tiv ity th a t would br ing r e tu rn s and also en te r ta in . C ontacts in th e field of a f t e r ­d a rk e n te r ta in m e n t and the ef­for ts of F r a n k Pa lum bo, th e di­rec to rs of the Civic Opera Com­pany enabled the com m ittee to p u t to g e th e r an im posing a r r a y of ta len t.

In P h ilad e lp h ia , B ro th e r Felix ta u g h t for seven years a t St. V in cen t’s School, G erm an tow n a nd was a m em ber of the first facu l ty of C hris t ian B ro th e rs at th e W est P h ilad e lp h ia Catholic H igh School for Boys. He ta u g h t a t La Salle College for tw en ty years and in 1951 was nam ed professor of m a th em a t ic s a t the E lk in s P a rk scholasticate .

D uring his tw en ty y e a r s ’ s tay a t La Salle B ro th e r Felix was dean from 1928 un ti l 1930 and aga in from 1934 u n ti l 19 38. A g if ted a r t i s t and m usician , he was the first m o d e ra to r of the LA SALLE COLLEGIAN, the u n d e r g r a d u a t e w eekly new s­paper, and composed the lyrics for th e La Salle V ictory March.
