Editorial

As part of its continuing demonstration for agricultural projects and as a pioneer in agricultural production in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Alkhorayef moves successfully ahead. It was one of the first wheat producers in the early 1980s when the government started to support the agricultural sector for wheat self-sufficiency. It was also one of the leaders in producing fodder based on the latest irrigation systems and mechanization through the Alkhorayef Group’s Equipment Sector.

Agricultural production of the company started to become more diversified with the production of field and greenhouse vegetables. It continued developing, confronting the challenges the agriculture sector faced with such price hikes of production inputs and the decrease of products’ prices. However, it has followed a steady course.

As part of efforts to vary its income sources and look for alternatives and because of the poultry industry’s importance as a promising sector for increasing demand and the big gap between production and consumption, after feasible studies, the company developed projects to produce chickens on its Alwasi’ farms in Al-Kharj, benefiting from the latest international systems in poultry barns at a production capacity of more than four million chickens annually. It signed a cooperation agreement with ARASCO to be supplied with the required fodder for feeding because ARASCO has a vast experience and a good position in fodder production.

Thanks to Allah, by the beginning of this year the company started to market chickens under Alwasi’ trademark in Riyadh, Al-Kharj and Al-Qusaim. Moreover, it intends to expand by increasing production and number of farms according to well-advised strategies in case customer demand, thanks to Allah, increases.

Finally, as we endorse this step, and we thank the company employees for their efforts, I call upon them to have Alwasi’ chickens and enjoy its taste, wishing them all prosperity and success.

On area of 11,000 square meters

Alkhorayef Group opens new factory in LibyaAs part of its plans to expand internationally, Alkhorayef

Group recently opened a new factory for Alkhorayef Submersible Electric Pump Factory WSP Co. in Libya. A large ceremony was held celebrating the factory’s launch in Al-Kremiyyah Street in Tripoli. It was attended by Chairman of the Alkhorayef Petroleum Co. and board member of the Riyadh Chamber of Commerce and Industry Sheikh Saad Alkhorayef, board member and CEO of Alkhorayef Paper Industries Co. Sheikh Bandar Alkhorayef.

In a speech delivered on that occasion Sheikh Saad Alkhorayef said the new facility was built according to international standards. The area on which the factory is built is about 11,000 square meters including a headquarter building on 1200 square meters, main maintenance building on 1250 square meters, a building for engine propelling—first of its kind in

Libya—on 350 square meters, a bonded warehouse on 375 square meters, and a 9000 square meter area for storage and equipments display, and a residence area for workers, a café and entertainment space.

Alkhorayef said the facility is large enough to fix and manufacture more than 3600 units of submersible electric pumps every year. The testing department is equipped with the highest level of technology and equipments needed to test all WSP produced or repaired by the company.

President of Alkhorayef Petroleum Company David Henderson, Deputy President of Alkhorayef Petroleum Co. for operation in Africa Haitham Al-Maaytah, Deputy President of Alkhorayef Manufacturing Co. Matt Kena and Director General of Operations and Training Majdi Crolls all attended the launch.

Alkhorayef exports submersible electric pumps to Russia and IndonesiaAlkhorayef Petroleum Company, subsidiary of the

Alkhorayef Group, recently won contract to export four submersible electric pumps of high effusion to Russia and Indonesia to pump about 70,000 barrels a day. This follows the signing of a strategic partnership with International ConocoPhilips Inc. and ConocoPhilips Joint Stock Company, to enter new markets seen as the most competitive internationally in oil industries.

Alkhorayef Group’s Chairman and CEO of Alkhorayef Petroleum Company (APC) Sheikh Saad bin Abdullah Alkhorayef said the new contract is a significant industrial achievement to Saudi Arabia and can be added to its other achievements accomplished in the past years. The APC executed two contracts signed with International ConocoPhilips to install four submersible electric pumps of high effusion in one of ConocoPhilips’ facilities in Indonesia to pump 35,000 barrels per day so that total production reaches 70,000 barrels per day after the installation of all pumps in the offshore facility located on the coast of the South Natuna Sea, he added.

The chairman affirmed the quality production the group

maintains and its on-time delivery added to its international reputation which helped it win the bid of ConocoPhilips, to excavate its 15 offshore wells in Indonesia and Russia by installing the submersible electric pumps in these offshore oil wells in addition to bottom rigs and surface rigs. The first three pumps were sent from its Western Submersible Pumps Factory in a week to complete the project on time.

Director-General of the Industrial Property Authority, MODON, Dr. Tawfiq bin Fawzan Al-Rabiah hailed the agreement stressing the achievements the Alkhorayef Group accomplished, best illustrated with the use of its pumps in global markets. This makes Alkhorayef one of the major competing companies in some of the most competitive markets in the world—Russia and Malaysia.

Alkhorayef Group is one of the largest investment groups in the region. It is experienced in many commercial and industrial fields enabling it to enter different global markets. The new contract will help it continue its distinguished performance, achieve more success and compete with the best oil companies in the world.

Through investment in the poultry farming sector, the company seeks to implement development plans and secure various income sources that can contribute to development of the company and the growth of this new sector. The company hopes to achieve success in its investment in poultry, which would help it launch new projects in the future.

In 2000 it decided to build poultry plants in Al-Wasi’ region in east of Al-Kharj city, said Director General of the company Eng. Mohammed Abdulaziz Al-Abdullateef. Construction works started in 2002 and in 2006 first group of chickens was produced. At first, ARASCO was in charge of marketing the products for two years and AlKhorayef Co. manages the operation, nutrition and vaccination. AlKhorayef gained good reputation and is now marketing the products.

Why poultry farming??AlKhorayef Co. invested in this sector because, according to

studies, it is a promising and rapidly growing sector, affirmed Al-Abdullateef. Moreover, Saudi Arabia imports chickens to bridge the gap between supply and demand in local market

Mohammed Al-Abdullateef,The General Manager of Alkhorayef Agricultural Projetcs:

Wasi’ Poultry Gained Good ReputationOur goal is to be one of the best poultry companies in the kingdom

Marketing the production ourselves had positive impacts on the company

Poultry sector is promising… We entered it to balance between supply and demand

We consider new plans to increase production with the Agricultural Bank’s loans

and the government has recently adopted policies to decrease the number of agricultural projects for the purpose of preserving water. The company found this project an alternative plan and a way to secure new income generating projects.

The company has become one of the most experienced in poultry farming, particularly after it took control of the marketing. This is clearly illustrated through increasing profits and the company's position in the market.

Trademark The name of the product “Al-Wasi’ Chickens” is the same of the

region’s where the farms are established. The company did not use its own name because most of the companies do not use their titles or the names of shareholders for their products.

“Al-Wasi’ Chickens” was registered as a trademark at the Ministry of Industry, which will help the company promote its new projects.

“Al-Wasi’ Chickens” achieved success because of its high quality as customers care only about the quality of the product; poor quality harms the company and distorts its image. If the product is of high quality and the company is reputed, success is guaranteed.

AlKhorayef Agricultural Projects Company develops gradually through strategies that are compatible with the situation it is coming through and help access new sectors in order to achieve its objectives.

Depending on its good start, the company wants to be stronger and more famous to become one of the leading companies in this sector.

Troubles and difficultiesThe Director General said that the company chose

a group of skilled vets and experienced staff who worked in similar projects in and outside the kingdom and the management team performs its duties fully and efficiently.

When the company decided to enter this sector the road was not paved; one of the main challenges the company faced was the fluctuation of fodder price. Few months after we started our project, fodder jumped from SR700 to SR1400 per ton.

Moreover, bird flu crisis resulted in the decline of demand on chicken. ARASCO, the party responsible for marketing, was under severe pressure at that time. AlKhorayef Co. had to take strict procedures in compliance with instructions by the Ministry of Agriculture. It had to move the chickens from the farm to the abattoir, which was very difficult.

A new step forwardFor the purpose of running the production process from

A to Z the company wanted to market its products itself. It took the company's managerial staff eight months to take that decision. The transfer of the marketing process from ARASCO lasted five months. During that time, the company benefited from the experience of some marketing companies and then started marketing its production.

In the transitional period the company reconsidered the production process to provide the market with its products on daily basis.

Regarding the marketing policy of ARASCO he said that it used to take two weeks in marketing and then waits until a new cycle of production begins. When the company took control of the marketing, it modified the whole production process so that fresh chickens are found in market every day. At first, small quantities were produced because any new product needs time to be

accepted by people. A big promotion campaign was launched in newspapers

for two weeks to introduce the product. Posters were given out to distribution agencies and sale outlets. Many of them are now selling only Wasi’ Chickens and the logo can be seen at their fronts.

The marketing campaign first hit Riyadh because of the small production quantities and the high rates of consumption in the capital. Recently, the company expanded the marketing reaching Al-Qaseem, As-Sdeer, Az-Zulfi and Al-Kharj.

AlKhorayef Agricultural Projects Co. seeks to be one of the main poultry companies in Saudi Arabia, the director general added.

Reasons of successTo achieve success in poultry farming the company

inspects the product's appearance, taste and healthiness. This is a long procedure; first, the plant must be designed in accordance with poultry farming’s latest technologies in terms of appropriate temperatures and lighting in addition to good nutrition including the use of suitable provender in producing healthy chickens that taste good.

Taking care of the chickens’ health through vaccination since the first day they enter the farm and until they are served plays a significant role in providing the best products.

The slaughtering stage is very important. Only healthy chickens that during their movement did not suffer any problems such as cuts and bruises, which would cause thrombosis and change in appearance, are marketed.

Abdullateef denied rumors saying that chickens are injected with chemical materials to speed up the growth. He affirmed that chickens are fed with concentrated food that contains a very high processing coefficient to have balance between the weight of the chicken and the amount of fodder used.

The provender is made upon the recommendation of experienced companies and specialized studies to have concentrated food and avoid any loss. The poultry processing is intensive; it takes only 30-32 days. During that time the chickens are gathered in small rooms and prevented from movement; 16-18 chickens occupy only 1 sq m.

Good lighting is essential to encourage them to eat all the time and grow quickly according to the timetable. People who have chickens at their houses or in their own farms put them in open places where they can move freely. They are not given special food; they have the rest of the food the owners have, which slows down the processing and weight gain. Chemicals are never used in the production process.

Expansion plansAlKhorayef Co. has four poultry plants in Wasi’

producing 15.000 chickens every day. The total area of the project’s lands and plants there is 80 million sq m, each plant is 50.000 sq m.

It also has lands and plants in Al-Rughaib region near Al-Dulm city in Al-Kharj. It is now making efforts to obtain licenses from the Ministry of Agriculture to carry out new projects in this region, which is part of the poultry production expansion plans, he added.

Recently, it got the license to expand the presently undergoing projects in Wasi’ to raise their production capacity.

It also hopes that the Agricultural Bank finances 80 per cent of its expansion projects because there is no interest on its loans and 20 per cent of the loan is granted as support. The company will finance the rest of the cost from its profits.

Future plans The company seeks to enter big markets in

the country when its production gains reputation because competition in such markets is high and only the fittest can survive.

Although the project is young, the company succeeded in marketing its production of chickens that are free from disease and of high quality.

Currently, the production capacity is 15.000 chickens a day, i.e. 450.000 chickens a month. Through new project expansions, the company seeks to increase it to more than 100.000 a day. However, its production decided to postpone those plans for a while because of the global financial crisis. In the future it will study the results and take the suitable decisions.

The Center’s philosophy is based on the importance of early intervention and suitable rehabilitation as well as providing good academic grounding as the cornerstone for healthy children. The center provides all what children need in one place.

The Center’s director Reema Alkhorayef stressed it is important for parents to realize a child with special needs can be an important person in society and can have its special imprints in it. She added it is significant to promote awareness of the importance of early intervention and shed light on the role of parents in rehabilitating the child, treating him/her as an ordinary individual and not as a different person because such would impede his/her development.

High quality servicesThe Center, which received many applications for the coming

new school year, aims to preserve the level of motor movement among handicapped children, enhance their capabilities, and facilitate their motor growth so that there is greater coordination between the child’s age and his\her mental age group while making sure the body form remains intact and the prevention of deformities and muscle distortion, train them to walk and determine which tools can best help achieve his\her own goals in light of their medical condition.

The Center makes an assessment of the personal abilities of the child for the purpose of preparing a plan so that he reaches the highest level of independence and self-dependence through identifying the correct prosthetic device to help him achieve this end. It also examines the daily life skills of children with special needs and trains them to develop and help them become independent in terms of feeding themselves, putting on clothes, personal hygiene, motor movement and walking.

Speech difficulties and psychotherapyThe Center offers services that include treatment of speech

and language delay, and speech difficulties using PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System) aiming to help the children acquire communications skills with pictures. The

Reema Alkhorayef: “Ain Al-Faras” is an Integrated Center for Children With Special NeedsEarly intervention and suitable rehabilitation

are cornerstones for healthy children

Daughters of Abdulrahman bin Abdullah Alkhorayef Reema and Seema recently opened the Ain Al-Faras Center for the Rehabilitation of Children with Special Needs. It is for training purposes and rehabilitating children with special needs.

program is divided into six stages starting from exchanging simple pictures to writing sentences.

The program also seeks to develop the child’s comprehension skills compatible with his\her mental age, his strength and weakness, the measure of the degree of autism using the (pep3) program, identify and explain activities that help increase concentration and attention, solve psychological disorders and emotional problems some kids suffer and hold guidance sessions for parents and provide programs to be used in homes and which are aimed at changing undesirable behavior and dealing with it.

Moreover, the Center provides children with the necessary education that plays a role in making the rehabilitation program a success. An educational assessment is carried out through the examination of the child’s comprehension and mental capabilities and then he\she joins special education classes.

The Center implements the Treatment and Education of Autistic and related Communication-handicapped Children (TEACCH) Program, which is designed to improve the academic abilities of children with special needs.

Early interventionMs. Reema emphasizes that early intervention is the

cornerstone as it helps build and develop the child on firm established grounds. At early age those children can be taught easily, and trained and assisted to acquire new skills. Because they are different, they have to be trained to do everything including what to do with their hands and feet because these limbs are ambiguous at best to ordinary children and their use have to be learned as for example, the hand can be used to catch things or protect oneself from falling down. When falling, the child with special needs does not use the hands to protect himself/herself, something normal for children. That is why they have to be trained at early age.

When learning those fundamentals in the early years, the child can then focus on education and academic development—the aspiration of all parents.

StudentsThere are eight children with special needs at the Center

and four ordinary children in its kindergarden because it implements a strategy of integration at an early age. It is interested in rehabilitating both sides and integrating them, carrying the process gradually by first allowing the child to spend half an hour in kindergarden every day accompanied by his special needs teacher until both sides become used to each other.

Rehabilitation stepsThe director said a clear improvement is seen by everyone

i.e. parents, teachers and specialists as the Center has a consistent rehabilitation policy. On day one after registration, a meeting with the mother is arranged, writing down all data about the child including daily routine, medical records, parents’ remarks, their future vision and aspirations the Center would achieve with their child. A two-week assessment is then conducted and a comprehensive rehabilitation plan is set that includes providing all skills that need to be developed and rehabilitated. The plan is implemented gradually and according to a fixed time-table. The mother is detailed on every single objective and her feedback is important for specialists to learn from. Her visits to the Center is to see what the specialists are doing so she can implement them at home as it is important for the family to take part in the child’s rehabilitation to obtain best results.

CadreThe Center’s employees are all women: three special

education teachers with a female assistant for each, there is a pediatrician, a physical and occupational therapist, a speech therapist, a psychologist, a secretary and an accountant.
